About a 20 min drive will take you to the quaint village of Matlacha, (pronounced Mat la shay) It is a very colorful little Island with plenty of tourist spots, e..g., restaurants, shops, etc. It is a barrier island. Continuing from there, you will come upon Little Pine Island which is a preserve for wildlife after which you will come to Greater Pine Island. To the left is St James and to the right is Bokeelia. All three islands are worth a visit.
Crossing the bridge to Fort Myers, an 8 minute drive, will take you in the direction of Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel and Captiva, the latter two being known for their shelling. Further south is Barefoot Beach in Bonita Springs, also known for it's shelling and turtle preserve, after which you might want to visit Naples and Marco Island in Collier County.
The Cape itself has many attractions and restaurants, including live theater, water park, yacht club and many parks and of course golf clubs and a plethora of restaurants to suit every taste. It has fine shopping, but for more variety you will find Bell Tower mall in Fort Myers and Miromar shopping mall in Estero with it's outlet stores offer a larger variety.
Further north, there is Punta Gorda, Charlotte Harbor, Venice Beach, Tampa and others too numerous to mention all within 40 min to 2 hour drive. Miami is a little over 2 hours drive going SW.
Key Largo is an hour or so south of there, but if you wish to visit Key West, I would suggest that you take one of the many ferries if you wish to avoid a long drive. If you should decide to visit Key Largo, do stop at the Coral castle in Homestead, SW of Miami. To learn more about it, look it up on the internet. It is a fascinating place to visit. One of the top tourists attractions closer by is the Edison Estate. The tour also includes a tour of Edison's next door neighbor Henry Ford.
There are so many place here in Paradise and are just too many to mention each and every one. Wild life abounds with feral boars, bears, panthers, alligators, snakes, lizards, armadillos and much more. For bird lovers we have eagles, hawks, pelicans etc. The flora is abundant and beautiful. For the adventuresome, there is always the Everglades.
I hope I have given you some idea of what to expect when you come down here, but if I've left anything out, please feel free to contact me and I'll do my best.
Our stay at Palm Breeze was perfect. The apt was clean, neat, spacious, convenient for our needs. We used the pool every day, entertained a few guests and found it to be quiet, clean and quite enjoyable. We have booked for 2 weeks in March, 2017 and have recommended it to friends. Magy and Rudy are very nice, accommodating and actually the best :"landlords" I've encountered so far. When I am retired and can spend an entire month or two, Palm Breeze is where I will look first.
First time in Cape Coral:))))) beautiful place, and the apartment was so nice to stay in, close to everything, nice and clean, quiet area, restaurant, shops and the beach nearby:)))) we will soon be back in Cape Coral it was just great:))))
All three of us eagerly arrived at our Cape Coral "home" for 11 nights in late January. The pictures & description of the apartment were quite accurate. We were all expecting to be much more cramped but were pleasantly surprised just how much room we all had.
Two full bathrooms was a real plus & being able to use the washer & dryer right in the house was a real treat too. Supplied linens & towels were more than adequate. The kitchen was well furnished (minus a whole roll of paper towels, any dinner napkins, more than 6 coffee filters, a full set of measuring cups & a stopper for the bathtub). A real blessing was how close the Family Dollar Store was-easily walking distance-so we were able to quickly pick up all these items we needed.
We lucked out pretty much with the weather-especially considering we left OHIO at 16 degrees. We had many, many inches of rain for 2 days in a row the first week we were in Cape Coral but it was a good time to relax inside, catch up on laundry & plan where to go next. "Cabin fever" forced us out even in the rain once it let up a bit to do some more exploring.
Maggie is very quick to answer e-mails & Rudy is on the premises early each day for any help or questions. The only down side was probably in not understanding the tv's. We were informed in advance but did not fully understand just how to operate them thinking we had a couple local stations. Netflix was a treat to be able to watch a couple movies I had not seen.
We were unfamiliar with this area of FL so we had fun going in all different directions each day to explore another area. The very first night we ran into a couple at a restaurant who gladly gave us tips for all the great places to try; we hit almost all they suggested & really enjoyed them all. Having to pack up & leave on a day that was in the 80's was the hardest part of the whole trip-we so wanted to stay at least one more day but knew we had to leave.
We would all recommend this apartment to anyone able to get away for a while but still feel like you had the comforts of home.
