Some experiences are simply unique, and this is one of them: the chance to enjoy an exclusive apartment, in a stately and historic 19th century building, part of one of Europe’s architectural benchmarks, Madrid’s Plaza de Oriente.
Generous in its proportions, beautifully decorated, and with impressive views over the Royal Palace and the Plaza de Oriente, this stunning property oozes joie de vivre and will delight the most discerning travelers. Almost 300m2 of living space, cleverly distributed into a large living area and three large bedrooms providing the degree of privacy, comfort and facilities you would expect on a luxury holiday, whether you are traveling with friends or as a family.
Inside, the apartment is spacious, bright and well proportioned, affording warmth, a sense of balance and a classical atmosphere. The property’s structural details are optimized to great effect, with its stately air, high ceilings, original wooden floors and magnificent balconies, with stunning views, and wooden inner shutters and surrounds.
All the rooms in the house are bathed in natural sunlight, providing the whole with a cheerful atmosphere, a sense of space and calm. Certainly a house to be lived in to the full!
A home for living and entertaining indeed. Access to the building is already imposing, the beautiful external facade leading to a large entrance hallway with marble floors, wooden carpentry, a wooden staircase with wrought iron banisters and wood handrail, and a lift. The building has its own personal caretaker.
And so on to the property itself, on the second floor, where the large hallway leads you to the rest of the house.
The living area has a dining room, living room and library, all communicated through generous open wooden frames which provide a sense of order and space. The balconies, with original white-painted woodwork and stunning views over the historic settings on the outside, share center stage with the exquisite interior decor of aesthetic refinement, with touches of classical, modernist and French styles, and sumptuous textiles and upholstery. The result is a serene, comfortable and aristocratic atmosphere, a feeling of savoir faire, buckets of personality, and a nod to 21st century living whilst fully respecting the property’s original classical essence, in keeping with its palatial surroundings.
The main feature of the dining room is a large dining table for ten, the perfect host for that perfect evening, in connivance with the Royal Palace which can be gazed upon as you dine. The living room has a sitting area and several charming reading corners.
The kitchen is spacious and equipped with all the necessary facilities for entertaining, or enjoying a quiet breakfast.
A corridor leads to the sleeping area, with two double bedrooms, both en-suite.
The master bedroom is set apart from the other two bedrooms and has its own balcony, a magnificent double bed, reading area with bench and two comfy chairs, a separate dressing room with wood-panelled walls, large wooden cupboards and a veritable ladies’ boudoir leading to a full en-suite bathroom.
The second bedroom has a double bed and en-suite bathroom, as does the third bedroom, which additionally boasts views of the Royal Palace.
There is a fourth room equipped with TV and a sound system, a sofa bed and work table. The perfect working space, a quiet sitting room, or even an additional bedroom.
The historic quarter of Habsburg Madrid is one of the city’s main attractions. The Plaza de Oriente is part of a historical site comprising the Royal Palace, the Sabatini gardens, Campo del Moro and the Opera Theater, all important architectural landmarks from the Habsburg era. The Plaza de Oriente opens the way to other sites and places that cannot be missed on any visit to Madrid: the Plaza Mayor, the Almudena Cathedral, Plaza de la Villa, calle Mayor or the Encarnación Monastery. Immerse yourself in culture by taking a short stroll, or a short bus or metro ride, to one of the city’s many famous museums, or visit the “in” places, chic restaurants or shopping areas in Madrid’s vibrant city center.
Please note: Only the master bedroom and the TV room are fitted with air conditioning, the rest of the rooms are fitted with ceiling fans.
Those of us that are part of Home at Homes, share a very characteristic quality: we suffer what is known as the 'Stendhal syndrome'. Beautiful things excite us and there is nothing we can do about it! We strive to see, feel and taste the good things of life. We can be very miserable at times, but when we are happy, we put all our heart and soul into staying that way. This blessed curse, conditions even our long working hours, something, which on the other hand fills us with happiness and, being happy, is very good for the health!

Home at Homes purchased this apartment in 2013
The location of the property is truely impossible to beat. In the heart of Madrid´s historical center and right opposite the Royal Palace and the Madrid Opera House.
Pictures do not do this apartment justice. It is like being in a palace while looking at the Royal Palace. In the words of our sixteen year old, "this place is insane". As a family of five, we rent apartments or houses for all of our vacations. I have never seen a more well equipped kitchen in any holiday rental place. We ate on beautiful dishes by candle light with the Royal Palace outside of our windows on Christmas Eve - a truly magical experience.
The location of this apartment is perfect. The Mercado de San Miguel is a five minute walk. The gardens of the palace are across the street. The Metro stop is less than a five minute walk.
This apartment, at least during the holiday season, is in a very hustling bustling area. There are musicians outside the windows and there are two restaurants below. We loved this and could not imagine staying anywhere else if/when we return to Madrid.
Absolutely fabulous! We weren't sure if the property could live up to the lovely description and photos on the VRBO website, but it certainly did. We would recommend this place to anyone looking for a really special experience in Madrid. We made ourselves right at home. making coffee and cooking in the kitchen, eating in the very nice dining room, sipping wine in the living room and even doing some laundry. The floor to ceiling French doors that open onto small balconies let in a lot of sunlight and offer gorgeous views of the Royal Palace and Plaza de Oriente. We walked from the apartment to sights such as the Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and even the Prado Museum, Reina Sofia Art Museum and Retiro Park. We also walked to our favorite restaurants - Sobrino de Botin, Julian de Tolosa, Casa Mingo and Cafe de Oriente which is just below the apartment. We walked to Casa Patas for dinner and a flamenco show, to the Chocolateria San Gines, the shops along Calle del Arenal and to the Atocha Train Station when we needed to buy train tickets. We were pleased with the customer service and the apartment was quiet, clean, well-maintained and equipped with everything you could possibly want. We can't wait to go back!
The website does not do justice to this property, either on its excellent location facing the Royal Palace across a lovely park, or the apartment itself, which is tastefully appointed and had plenty of room for our group. Karin is also a pleasure to work with.
This property has an absolute privaledged location in the center of Madrid, at the Plaza de Oriente and right opposite the Royal Palace. It is one of its kind.
