Calling all modern pioneers, urban gypsies, elegant adventurers and tasteful travellers in search of stylish secrets. Shhhhhhhh…..just down the hill, a pebble's throw from the River Fowey, in a picturesque waterside village, a secret sanctuary awaits you.

The Sunday House, a tenderly transformed 16th century Victorian chapel affording idyllic river views. Having been awarded the 5* Self-Catering Award from Visit England & offering four bespoke bedrooms, comfortably sleeping nine guests.

Plumped pillows and anti-allergy downy duvets, you'd be hard pushed to find a more luxurious space to sink into when it's time to put your head down. Wake every morning to the soothing stream that flows a gentle course down the bank to the side of the property and supplying a calming and gentle sound of running water. Your very own little piece of heaven; there's no better way to start the day. Snooze a little, read a little, grab a Nespresso and read a bit more. Our bedrooms are hard to leave. Yet so is our Riverview terrace. What better way to relax al fresco enjoying the idyllic views of the boats that drift by. Gaze out towards the river Fowey and watch the dragonflies dance beside kingfishers and wild otters frolicking in the very fold of the Fowey estuary that inspired Kenneth Grahame’s novel The Wind in The Willows.

The second floor open-plan living-room is an amazing space, with enormous windows, huge log burner, original Chapel organ and vaulted ceiling; it's a complete joy, offering the most stunning views. Star gaze, storm watch, or just get snuggly with one of our cashmere throws. A great ambience in the evening to ensure you and your guests are cozy and warm whilst relaxing on the lush sofas after a lovely day of walking on the Saints Way or exploring antique shops in Lostwithiel.

The kitchen is located in the former Sunday school, is really rather special. With original flooring throughout, you'll find a Rangemaster with gas hob and electric oven, Nespresso machine, Dualit appliances, fridge, freezer and dishwasher. The kitchen is large and spacious, with dusky Blue cabinets and smooth wooden work surfaces. It's fantastically well stocked with equipment too, so you'll never be left searching for a corkscrew - keep an eye out for the fabulous vintages pieces too. Even if you are a keen cook or wish to have a wonderful Cornish chef cater & entertain you (which we can arrange) the kitchen will be ideal for preparing any gastronomic delight. Fowey is just down the road so you can go and buy some crab, lobster or fresh fish and return to The Sunday House and barbeque on the terrace to the delights of your guests or use the range cooker for boiling, grilling or oven baking your purchased morsels. A lovely farm house kitchen table, with original chapel benches, ideal for those family breakfasts and long perfect holiday lunches.

The original double entrance chapel doors take you through panelled vestibule and to the delights of the dining hall. There you will find the original chapel pulpit, custom silk drapery, solid oak floors and marble fireplace. A exquisite dining table for eight, ideal for intimate crackling fire side supper parties.

There are four bathrooms; the three en-suites and the family bathroom are fitted with heating bars and the finest of fixtures, showers and antique claw foot bath tubs with copious amounts of hot water will ensure everyone is dressed for dinner on time. The White Company bath towels and Laura Ashley beach towels are provided.

A private south-facing terrace with stunning views and surrounded by beautiful Cornish countryside and River Fowey views, you will really be pushed to stray far. With surreal sunsets and evenings spent using the outdoor dining area with barbecue, teak furniture and outdoor heater why would you want to stray?

About Louisa Bir

I adore Cornwall! My love for the West Country, sea air & pasties began at age 4 with our annual family pilgrimages from London to Cornwall.

My summers were a mix of glorious Enid Blyton inspired adventures, searching for crabs in rock pools, exploring pirate-caves, building sandcastles in near perfect coves, surfing all day from sun up until Mum would come drag us out at sun-down, noshing on picnics with soggy sandwiches, and playing endless rounds of cricket with my cousins on the beach.

Of course my optimistic nature makes me forget the days of grey rain and being confined to barracks our holiday-let watching the hours of Faulty Tower re-runs! Yes, rainy Cornwall can sometimes be rather grey, but when the sun is out, it truly is one of the most gorgeous places on earth. In fact, some would call it magical! Which is why I chose 'The Sunday House' as my home away from home. Now every year I trek from California to Golant to re-live my own childhood memories and create new ones with my husband and son. I hope "The Sunday House" can create magical memories for you & your love ones too!

Louisa Bir purchased this house in 2006

Why Louisa Bir chose Newquay & St Austell area

I first saw the Sunday House in the most in-enchanted way, online, (yes that's right) from my desk thousands of miles away, across the pond. I had never been to Golant, yet, something, call it a gut feeling, stirred a desire for me to go check this hamlet out for myself.

I had always wanted my son to share my love of Cornwall, so that being said I whisked him away for a holiday to go checkout a frumpy old deteriorating chapel, awfully decorated with deep maroon peeling paint and medieval suits of rusting armor.

The property had been on the market for four years and thus far only appealing to 15th century knights or some hopeless romantic with a penchant for large overseas renovation projects. Done deal!

Kai & I packed up from Jupiter, Florida and returned to the mother land to invoke on a journey of adventure and dedication to an uncompromising pursuit of excellence.

After 10 months of tears, frustration and a lot of red wine, I ultimately ended up encompassing every aspect of renovation, from the sourcing of period hardware and reproducing the balustrades, to the installation of the industrial specification hot water and heating system, to hand choosing high thread-count imported linens.

The journey was one filled with lots of new lifelong friendships, wonderful irreplaceable memories with my son, and a whole new found respect for patience. Ultimately resulting in a very comfortable sanctuary, across the pond with many more memories to come.

The Sunday House.....a sanctuary awaits you.

What makes this house unique

The Sunday House provides the perfect location to enjoy the idyllic views of the river, countryside and boats that drift by. Award wining in design and quality & customer service. Located in the picturesque waterside village of Golant, Fowey.

The Sunday House's elevated position affords enchanting views of the river Fowey from the upper levels and the sunny secluded south-facing patio area.

A small stream flows a steep course down the bank to the side of the property and supplies the calming and gentle sound of running water.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A family of 7 with 2 toddlers and a little baby stayed for a week in August and loved it. It's very atmospheric, comfortable, spacious and everything that we needed was there. To be quite honest, it's perhaps not ideal for those with toddlers because there are quite a lot of stairs but, having stayed before, we just knew to take our travel stair-gates. We enjoyed the spacious lounge on an evening, the comfortable en suite bedrooms with flat screen tvs and drinks out on the terrace in the sun. Golant is fantastic, parking fairly nearby, a lovely local pub and a great walk to Fowey. We expect to return.

What an experience!

  • 5 of 5

We so enjoyed our time at the Sunday House, what an experience to stay in a home with such history, charm and all the mod cons. The village is so beautiful and so close to so many activities,we canoed, rode horses, hiked and visited many historical places. But some or our favourite moments were lounging in the living room with all of us deep in a book. An unheard of event for a family with 4 teenagers from L A. The evenings on the deck with our wine were lovely too.

Where are we off to next???

Love your Mammoth Mountain Home, love your Golant Home,we are ready for more!!

Beautiful home, great area of Golant, perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing family holiday (4 adults and 3 children ages 6 and 14). The house is stunning with everything you could possibly need and all to the highest quality. The garage parking was great. The views from the house are stunning and sitting out on the deck of an evening watching the boats was perfect. We could not fault the property in anyway and cannot wait to return.

Very nice in a fantastic location.

  • 4 of 5

Spacious and well furnished but several levels meaning lots of steps. No instructions for routines such as recycling in property and minimal basic supplies. Garage parking a bonus.

Owner's Response: We truly hope you enjoyed your stay at The Sunday House . Thank you for your feedback. We endeavor to strive for the best possible experience for all of our guests and that can only be attained if our guests communicates with us, and allows us to remedy the matter, before or during their stay. I am sorry to hear you felt our supplies were minimal. Please note the property is 'self-catering', and we do provide paper products throughout the property, kitchen & laundry products, Gilchrist & Soames soap, shampoo & conditioner. We do also offer the option of daily house-keeping, who will shop for the week before arrival & chef for our clientele that prefer more then the self-catering experience. Yes, there are steps throughout the Sunday House. To convert the 200+ year old chapel and to utilize all the space this is a design feature and fully disclosed online and in our emailed property description. Lastly, we remove all recycling and rubbish for the guests in the bins provided. Our apologies, that you did not receive those instructions. Our mission is to provide you with the highest standard of luxury self catering accommodation Cornwall has to offer. The Sunday House aims to offers the very best, hence our recent 'Gold Award' and '5 Star Rating', 8 years in a row from Visit England. We hope to welcome you back.

Extremely stylish, and very well appointed

  • 4 of 5

The Sunday House is a beautiful characterful place in a great, quiet location by the river in the "real Cornwall" away from all the tourist chatter. Its a short trip through beautiful countryside to reach the small but picturesque town of Fowey. Lovely local pub and friendly folks. Highly recommended.

Unique Retreat / Wonderful Location

  • 5 of 5

Where do I begin, I found the Sunday House online and thought it looked perfect for our anniversary getaway. It was perfect, the owner, Louisa, was really helpful and pleasant. Before our arrival she kindly posted us a book that she complied with local area information, things to do, favorite restaurants, etc. The house keeper, Karen, arranged to have all of our food shopping delivered and unpacked before we arrived. We were welcomed with a thoughtful gift basket of local fares and bottle of Champs to celebrate our anniversary. As far as the whole setting, it's amazing- fantastic decor, very comfortable with a lot of thought to detail. We loved the fluffy robes, plush beach towels and amentities. The kitchen was well organized. excellent cooking facilities, kettle, coffee maker, Nepresso machine, Dualit toaster and a good supply of all kitchen equipment and high quality tableware. We had a wonderful dinners at several restaurants in Fowey, 'Sam's, 'Nathan Outlaws', 'The Other Place', 'Q Restaurant' to name a few. Enjoyed our walks along the river and coastal paths. Evenings sitting in the beer garden at the local pub (300 yd's away) overlooking the River Fowey. The area beaches were gorgeous. The property itself was well located for our outings. We loved driving back to the village. The surrounding area is very picturesque. I'm really looking forward to spending my next anniversary at the Sunday House- I highly recommend for a luxury break in a lovely setting.
