Attic pull down stairs horrible

  • 1 of 5

My wife and I in our 6o’s, recently retired and traveling with a small dog were already in nearby Rockland and decided to extend our stay in Maine for another week. We are VRBO veterans and with great success, but perhaps because this was a spur of the moment thing and we didn’t read the property description thoroughly, this time we struck out. We were aware of the outside stairs and this was a second floor apartment, but inside we were surprised to see the pull down stairs that lead to the bedroom that are exactly what we have at our home in Pennsylvania that go to our attic.

While my wife is a good sport, she was very concerned about sleeping on the third floor with the only exit a set of pull down stairs. However there was no way she was going to climb those stairs and sleep in what she felt was a fire hazard. (The stairs pulled down into the kitchen area.) She slept on the couch. For myself, I climbed up to sleep in the huge double bed (and how they got the bed up there is a mystery to me. Once at the top of the stairs there are handholds to help you into a standing position. To descend, you must start on your behind using the handholds provided and proceed down.

Early the next morning when I called the owner(he lives on the premises) he immediately acknowledged the situation saying “Oh for guests that can’t handle the stairs we make the guest room available. I’ll have my wife come unlock it.” This guest bedroom door is located next to the piano and according to the VRBO listing is supposed to cost additional. We were not charged the additional fee for using this room.

Brian’s comment “I’ll have my wife come unlock it” was concerning in that the guest room door had a sign on it that indicated it was a fire exit. If this room was to be a fire exit, the door should not have been locked. When we did access the guest room the other door in that room had a similar fire exit sign on it, but that door was not locked from the other side.

We set our suitcases on a couch and floor and partially unpacked by stacking clothes on the piano. The so called guest room was ok but the chest of drawers rickety and really unusable.

Final note: Making our reservation required us to agree to an additional $59 charge(not a deposit) for “damage insurance”. Also, I don’t understand how only one of the previous reviews mentions the pull down stairs. There seems to be some confusion with the downstairs unit. Not recommended

Owner's Response: Clearly ours was not a suitable spot for these elderly guests. We did everything we could to make theirs a pleasant stay, but some folks are just not to be satisfied. Be sure to read our other reviews...they will reveal another reality. By the way, there is a let down fire escape ladder to be used from a window on the 3rd floor down to the deck just outside the kitchen. brian

Felt right at home

  • 5 of 5

Upon arrival we felt right at home. The owner could not be more welcoming and the apartment was immaculate. We were a 2 minute drive from the center of town and right at the foot of Mt Battie. Many trails and lakes were easily accessible. Camden, Maine, as a town, is gorgeous. The harbor is picturesque, stores quaint, and food delicious. It was great to hike early in the AM, come home, shower, throw hiking clothes into the washer and head to town for a delicious breakfast. At night, it was nice to go to one of the many restaurants for a drink and snacks. Camden is only a short drive away from Rockland, Maine and a reasonable drive to Acadia/Bar harbor for day trips. I would recommend this VRBO to anyone and we are looking forward to doing it again ourselves in the future.

A perfect spot!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was splendid. The apartment was an ideal size for the three of us and we found the accommodations to be ideal. Nothing was missing and everything was very clean. Fluffy, fresh towels and soft cotton sheets. Plenty of hot water. Newer appliances at our finger tips allowed us to leave with our clean clothes. The setting allowed us to enjoy the morning songs of the birds, the sunshine on the back deck was great company over morning coffee and while we were not in the village of Camden, our short 3 minute drive allowed us to see the charming homes along the way. The owners were joyful in our brief conversations and we would highly recommend their hospitable rentals to others. A great stay for us. While there is TV and cable available, we "opted out" for the full seven days and nobody seemed to notice. Instead we sprawled out on the living room floor and played board games. We give this vacation rental a 5!

Owner's Response: As we've said before, we love it when our guests have a good time. We've also said: "spend a week with us...not a fortune!" Whereas, we're not the least expensive VRBO listing in Camden, we probably offer the most for the least! Brian & Negar

Perfect place to stay in Camden ME

  • 5 of 5

Very nice apartment located 2 minutes from the heart of Camden. Very comfortable, clean and very well maintained. The owners are easy to contact and offer an excellent customer service. We felt warmfully welcomed. The owner even gave us a couple of his latest magazines to read and kindly offered us to stay one more night at no charge, the apartment being available at the end of our stay. Camden is a charming area and you can not ask for a greater place to stay for such a reasonable cost. We have had a wonderful time and we thank you very much. We strongly recommend this rental for a relaxing vacation in Maine and we would go back anytime.

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

I can not say enough nice things about this property or the owners, Brian and Negar. The original house dates from the 1830s and is brimming with charm and delightful little quirks that our family of three just loved. That said, the apartment area that we stayed in is completely updated and it is very functional, clean and comfortable. The property itself is lovely - very green and perfect for our 8yo son to run around and play in. We also slept really well as it is perfectly quiet at night and just a very peaceful place to be.

Brian and Negar were extremely helpful without being intrusive and made us feel like a part of the family. Five generations of Brian's family have lived in the house and it has a very warm and welcoming feel. As a family of readers, we also appreciated special touches like the interesting selection of current-edition magazines, as well as the collection of classic books in the upstairs bedroom. The television worked perfectly well, but we didn’t use it as we spent all our time exploring the area or just relaxing in the comfortable living area wih some good reading material.

The layout of the space is really functional and convenient with everything in perfect working order - gas range, washer/dryer unit, full-size fridge, etc. Climbing the pull-down stairs to the bedroom loft area might be challenging for some, but our family had great fun with it.

Camden is in a particularly beautiful area of Maine and we had a wonderful time exploring it. Hiking on Mt. Battie was our favorite adventure of the week. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this property to others.

Owner's Response: Negar and I very much cherish the experiences we have with travelers who want to get to know us, and who enjoy discovering our beautiful old home. It makes our VRBO "retirement project" even more satisfying. Brian
