Description

Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Grand Marais - Fisherman's Cabin

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-8) Rate incl. 4 adult

The 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin' is a restored historic commercial fisherman's home built of logs around 1900. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. We are less than 100 yards from the water. There are 3 well appointed bedrooms, 2 full baths, a huge dining room, a roomy pine living room with gas woodstove fireplace, a front cedar porch, and a natural slate patio. The original log home with it's well appointed kitchen and huge dining room is the core of the structure. The logs for the Cabin were hand hewn a century ago and show the broad ax marks from the original fisherman builders. The kitchen is thoroughly modern with stainless appliances, solid maple counter tops, and a two level snack bar. The property was completely renovated down to it's bones from 2003 to 2007, using recycled or repurposed materials wherever possible and is now a highly energy efficient home. The walls are adorned with local art and mementos of the great age of commercial fishing and logging here in Grand Marias. The view of the old harbor from the living room and the deck is stunning. There is also a view from the 3rd bedroom deck. Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings. The waxwings regularly invade the ash trees, along with fiercly dueling ruby throated hummingbirds. Visitors are encouraged to tour the property and observe the goings on in the gardens and the adjacent Boathouse! The Boathouse is an impressive timberframe structure that was built by the current owner as a workshop for building and restoring boats and for teaching classes and other public and private events. Stop in and see what's going on, maybe you will be recruited in to service to help on whatever project is under way! Please, no parties or large gatherings with non guests. We love dogs. Single dogs are allowed if under 40 lbs, must be clean and house trained and must not be left unattended and always kept on leash when outside. No dogs under 1 year old. If you are using the automatic booking function it will assess a $30.00 pet fee for one dog. This will cover one dog for 3 nights.

If your stay is longer than 3 nights or if you have more than one dog we will asses an additional $10 per night per dog after the first 3 nights.

If you have any questions please call to discuss your pets before booking. Any dogs larger than 40 lbs, and any dogs more than one must be approved by the owners.

Please give us a call if you have any questions.

Thank you!

About Todd and Susan Miller

The owners and managers of the Fisherman's Cabin are Todd and Susan Miller. Susan is originally from Duluth Mn and Todd from the Twin Cities. They have sailed the world's oceans together on their 35 foot sloop 'Snow Day', and have now settled down here in Grand Marais since 2003. Todd is a licensed Captain, and served on the local park board for many years. He is also active in community projects with area youth. Susan is the Special Education teacher at the local charter school. Todd's interests include leading a local dance band, building and restoring fun things, messing about in boats, and managing Real Estate. Susans interests include gardening, thrift store exploring, and cooking. They both love to travel and learn.

Todd and Susan Miller purchased this house in 2003

Why Todd and Susan Miller chose Minnesota

We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.

What makes this house unique

This is a great location for the summer festivals. Music and art seems to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening. Artists are plying their wares in nearly every shop. There is always something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is very close. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock.

The property was very nice and well kept.

Maybe it would be good to mention that there are steps from the lower level living room up to the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen. There is no railing there and we were staying with my 90 year old mother in law. We needed to help her on those steps each time. I guess that we knew there would be steps into the property but didn't really notice that there were more steps in the pictures of the property. Never would have noticed or even thought about this if she would not have been with us. Just a thought to mention it.

Very comfortable stay for our family of 5!

  • 4 of 5

Although we were not expecting the home to be broken up into several units, we were still very happy and comfortable with our family of 5! Plenty of space and everything we needed was there in the home! We felt truly welcomed when we arrived!

Owner's Response: Thanks for staying with us! We hope that we are clear in our description that there are multiple buildings/ units on the lot. It is a micro community within the small community of Grand Marais. This is an old residence and very much in keeping with the Grand Marais tradition of having multiple units on one property. Old families survived by having several generations live on one property, or by having a rental cabin in the back yard. This is one of those original properties that we have fully restored. Our entire "compound" consists of the original 3 units that date back to the turn of the previous century, plus the boathouse that we've added where we live. Thanks for staying with us.

Girls Weekend!!! located near everything fun in Grand Marais

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the North Shore Fisherman's Cabin. It is a very comfortable and cute place within walking distance to everything fun to do in Grand Marais. There is plenty of room for a large group although our group was only 3. The beds are very comfortable, the kitchen well-stocked, and there are plenty of bath towels. The fire pit was GREAT! We had morning coffee on the front porch everyday and watched the sunrise over the harbor.

Fastidious, snuggy-warm hundred-year old fisherman's cabin

  • 5 of 5

Three writers booked this hideaway for three days in the Fall. It was spacious enough for us to have private space to write, the gas fireplace kept us warm in the cool weather, the well-stocked kitchen allowed us to cook our favorite foods, and it was close enough to the big lake and hiking trails for times when we wanted to get some fresh air. This place is big enough for a group of 9, or a small group like ours. We definitely will return!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the kind words and we are happy that you all got some good writing done. Sorry we didn't bump in to you- I think we were out enjoying the fall colors! Please come back and see us any time. Cheers, Todd and Susan

Our favorite place to stay in Grand Marais

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is really well taken care of and is large enough for our family, plus visitors. Centrally located so we can walk anywhere in town we need to get to. The furniture and beds are all VERY comfortable. And the kitchen is great! Plenty of room for 2 or 3 cooks to be crossing paths without getting too tangled. :) It's become our favorite place to stay in Grand Marais.

Owner's Response: When that was our kitchen we also really appreciated the room. Susan especially does not like to be crowded in the kitchen! We are very happy you enjoyed yourselves. Take care and come again.
