Traditional Sardinian Farm House, Terrace, Garden, Close to Sea and Beach

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,453 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Spacious Rural Villa, Peaceful, Mountain views and Close to the Sea and Beach.

The house is a typical Stazzu Gallurese, a traditional rustic northern Sardinian farmhouse, about 100 years old. It is a simple, charming and comfortable detached property set in tranquil countryside; newly renovated with central heating and 3 large double bedrooms, a big living room, a cosy well-equipped kitchen and 2 bathrooms. It can sleep 8 - 10 people. There is a large patio, a small vineyard, fruit trees, olives and giant cacti. Li Reni is a peaceful retreat with great views and yet within a few minutes you can be dining in town or relaxing on the beach and the nearest is about a 10 minutes (5 km) drive from the house. The farmhouse is tranquil with mountains on three sides with the sea sparkling in the distance. The local village of Viddalba has restaurants, bars, shops, supermarkets and a famous thermal Spa. Good mobile Internet. Nearby, there are beach activities: sailing, windsurfing, scuba, diving. Close by there is horse riding, trekking, canoeing, cycling, fishing and an excellent ice cream parlour!

Family and house: We are an English family and Li Reni is our holiday home. I am a homeopath and run a complementary medicine centre, the Highgate Health Centre, in Highgate Village, London. My partner is a podiatrist. We have children at secondary school, university, backpacking and one is even working. We all enjoy coming to Sardinia whenever we can.

The house is a simple, delightful and tranquil rustic retreat. Sitting on the patio enjoying a glass or two of local wine all you can hear are the tinkling bells of sheep and goats as they graze in the surrounding mountains. We are slowly trying to make the house more self sufficient. We have our own waste treatment and the water can be used for the garden. We hope soon to have solar power and our own well for fresh water. Our little vineyard and fruit trees are organic.

Li Reni is a traditional Northern Sardinian farmhouse, called a Stazzu Gallurese and was one of the first properties to be built in the entire area. It is an important building locally as there are few original Stazzu left and it is the equivalent of Grade II listed. It was until recently a working farm.

We have renovated most of the property, added a modern new bathroom with a good shower, modernised an older bathroom which has a bath, shower and washing machine and we have created a cosy kitchen with local granite worktops, a new oven and fridge/freezer.

I hope you might enjoy what we love about Sardinia, the fantastic beaches, beautiful countryside with empty roads and excellent food. Sardinia is famous throughout Italy for the purity and integrity of its food and much of what is produced locally is organic. The inland towns are fascinating, often set on the sides of mountains with spectacular views.

The people are open and honest and all year round there are festas in all parts of Sardinia with music and dancing. In summer there are local festas every night and as busy a nightlife as you could want. Nonetheless, the house remains a peaceful haven.

There are some good expeditions to be had into the mountainous interior of the country and along the coast there is beach after beach to be explored, many of them quite empty even in high summer. If you need it the mobile internet, smartphones, PC Tablets, etc., work well in Li Reni. We have a caretaker who lives 2 minutes away. He is a lovely guy with a young family and will happily help you as needed.

Do contact me if you are interested in renting Li Reni or you just want to know more about the house and Sardinia. There is also a pretty comprehensive visitors pack with detailed directions and if you want to know more about horseriding, trekking, diving, cycling, mountain climbing, caving, sailing, etc., please just ask.

Feels like being part of Sardinian rural life

  • 5 of 5

Ever wanted to stay in one of those tranquil, out of the way places travel writers write about? We stayed at Li Reni in September, still warm/hot, and it is one of those places.

In the midst of the hills of northern Sardinia, yet only a few minute's drive from a number of local, picture-postcard villages, with their friendly shops, bars and restaurants, to buy supplies, or have a very reasonably priced evening out.

A glass of red on the terrace as the sun sets, is the perfect segue from a day at the beach or exploring the countryside, to enjoying a dinner of local fare and Sardinian hospitality.

A good choice of beaches from the busy to the secluded, or a walk along the coastline with a picnic along the way, made for some great days out.

Li Reni has been beautifully restored in the old style with modern facilities and is so quiet and restful at night. It's surrounded by its own gardens of lime trees and other typical hillside plantings.

And of course there's that Sardinian speciality, ice cream! There seems to be three main local ice cream parlours, one of which just stood out from the rest, but I can't remember its name. We were happy to compare and contrast again and again and again and again.....

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review, it is really appreciated. I am so glad you enjoyed Li Reni, September is a is a really nice time to visit Sardinia and once our kids have finally left school I hope we can spend more springs and autumns enjoying ice cream and romantic coastline walks. My favourite ice cream parlour is, of course, my local one which I think is called "non solo gelato". Mine is a tough decision between limone or cioccolato but for the wife it is always pistacchio which she never needs to share with the kids or me. Clever woman!

Great !

  • 5 of 5

I would recommand it to friends without any hesitation because the view of the neighboring mountains is great,it's a quiet place for relaxing, and the house is very comfortable.

The inhabitants of the closest village are very friendly, as for the Sardinians, especially with the kids ... thank's for all Ron

Thank you so much for your review. I'm very glad you had a good holiday and a pleasant stay in our house. Italians really do like kids! You can take yours to a restaurant at 10pm at night and nobody will bat an eyelid and an hour later another family with kids will arrive and that's just fine. They beam with delight at your baby and toddler and are very happy to watch kids run around and enjoy themselves. And I've noticed in the last few years that there are lots of new playgrounds and old ones have been refurbished which is good.

Lovely spacious house in beautiful surroundings.

  • 5 of 5

This is a very lovely traditional Sardinian farm house with all mod cons and situated in truly beautiful surroundings. Quiet and secluded but not too far to walk into the nearest small town Viddalba for shops and bars etc. A short drive in almost any direction will take you to some very fine beaches with great swimming and snorkeling opportunities. We spent many hours just walking along these beaches taking in the lovely sea air and spectacular views.

There are also some nice markets, restaurants and shops in many of the surrounding towns if that's what takes your fancy.

We did a lot of our own cooking with local fresh produce which was tasty and reasonably priced.

The house itself is very well maintained and has a large patio (though you will have to share this with some very friendly semi-resident cats!). The garden area around the house is very beautiful with many exotic plants and some lovely views of the marvelous surrounding landscape.

The bedrooms are comfy and spacious and there is a very large dining room/lounge and two modern equipped bathrooms. The kitchen is a bit on the small side but has everything you need and is very user friendly.

We had a fantastic stay here and would definitely recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for taking the trouble to give us your kind review. You did say you had some lovely peaceful walks along our local beach of Baia delle Mimose and the more wild surreal coastal walks at Portobello. It is nice to be able to choose to either be sitting in a beach cafe with a beer chatting and looking at a sunset or be alone enjoying nature in some of the beautiful isolated beaches scattered along the nearby coast. The Gallurese, as all Italians, do love their local produce and will take the time to explain to you that it is the best in Italy and in fact the whole world. And it is true, the fruit and veg and cheese are superb. Cats, yes indeed, luckily they are generous and quite tolerant and do allow us to enjoy the terrace.

, For a great family holiday.....

  • 5 of 5

Great characterful house, clean, well-stocked with things that made it like a home from home (kids games, all the kitchen implements you needed, a library of good books!!!) The view from the terrace is wonderful and with enough shade to sit/eat out during the day. It hit 43C in the first few days but after a spectacular electric storm calmed down to a glorious 30C for rest of holiday. Kids loved the beaches (we had great waves after the storm) Li Mindi, Cala Rossa and Li Margnanu being our favourites, though they also loved having a mud bath and swim at the thermal spring about 3km away. Viddalba has all the shops you'd need for provisions - we can recommend the bread shop highly!

If you want a bit of culture Castelsardo is worth a visit and my lads loved all the weaponry in the Museum of Banditry in Aggius (my vote would have gone to the Ethnographic museum but....) The owner's notes/advice were copious and most helpful and were all we needed to find our way around. Our favourite restaurants were in fact the nearest ones...... and oh!! the food!!

A wonderful place for a holiday (and I imagine it's amazing in spring)

Owner's Response: That's a lovely review, thank you very much. Sounds like you had a full and fun holiday, (I'm a bit jealous as we could not go this summer). Nice to learn about the new local restaurant and the museums. The local bread shop is great, the home made biscuits like the formagelle, little lemony ricotta cakes, are to die for. Good that you visited the thermal springs, they are so close by and they are a hidden gem. If you are feeling adventurous you can walk up the river that runs through the gorge and swim in tranquil pools in complete isolation. Lovely spot for a picnic.

A stupendous end of September at Li Reni

  • 5 of 5

The only clouds we saw were during the brief shower when we arrived - then clear skies and lovely weather for the rest of the week. We couldn't believe we were swimming in the sea in October! Li Reni was just the spot for a perfect chill-out vacation. The sun on the terrace for morning coffee and the cooling breeze in the evening bookended days of tootling round deserted roads investigating glorious empty beaches and the dramatic hinterland, and making a serious study of as many different vineyards as we could manage. Not to mention all the cheese makers. We especially enjoyed foraging for wood for the barbeque along the tracks around the back. A charming, comfortable spot - spotlessly clean, with that most essential touch - a library of books you've been planning to read for ages, but haven't had the time...until now. The owner was very responsive and helpful and lots of information in the house.Would love to see it in the early spring when the flowers are in bloom, it must be truly spectacular then, but it was also wonderful when it was so warm but so empty of tourists.

Owner's Response: I’m really chuffed to have such a nice review all the way from America. Thank you so much for taking the trouble and I’m so glad you enjoyed your visit and our little library. Yes indeed, blessed are the wine and cheese makers, they certainly have made my life happier! If you go to the cheese co-operative of Perfugas in Valledoria you can see the respect the Italian mainlanders have for the produce as they buy rounds of cheese to take home at the end of their holidays. Sardinian wines including local Badesi wines are gaining international respect and are well worth some serious research. Also, if you like a natural wine, the local cantina wines are unadulterated, fresh, clean and alive (and mercifully cheap).

A hidden gem

  • 5 of 5

I am reluctant to share our lovely experience for fear of the hoardes massing but what a lovely place Li Reni was. A perfect getaway house, well equipped, comfy and polished off with the most wonderful terrace and view. We had a great holiday exploring the local region, perfect for small kids, lots of beaches and good food. The best was the evening sunset on the terrace though.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your nice review. Li Reni is my second home and in the beginning it was a difficult decision whether to rent it out for all the obvious reasons. I think most visitors have had a good holiday and it is lovely that the house is filled with happiness which we can share and enjoy as well. And yes, some great sunsets...if I can't get back to Li Reni by the end of a day and relax on the terrace I do feel a bit cheated.

Nearest Airport
80 Kilometres
Alghero, Olbia
Car: recommended

The farmhouse, Li Reni, is on the north coast of Sardinia between Costa Smeralda and Alghero. The area is famous for its stunning coastline, fabulous beaches and coves with crystal clear water. Inland Sardinia is fascinating with mountain towns and superb driving along winding empty roads where you have the most fantastic variety of scenery to explore. From the farmhouse you can just relax on the patio but you are also only a short drive to busy seaside towns, exploring the lovely coast or visiting mountain villages. Ryanair flies to Alghero (all major car hire companies are represented at the airport) and Li Reni is about an hour and a quarter's drive away. You can also fly to Olbia, Costa Smeralda, and the house is about an hour's drive. The nearest village to Li Reni is Viddalba about 5 minutes away.
