Why Kirsten Simning chose Macalester - Groveland
I love mid-century design and when I saw the Scandinavian Cottage it was love at first site. It was built by the parents of the seller in 1954 and had been meticulously maintained. It just needed a little love to restore it to its original glory. We retained all of its charm while updating it to meet all of your 21st century travel needs.
What makes this House unique
This house reminds me of my grandparents' house in the very best way.

Great home in a great neighborhood
We enjoyed our stay in the cottage. This was our first trip to St Paul, and was very happy with the house sand it close proximity to everything. The home is very comfortable, and stocked very well. Definitely deserves our 5 star review.
This "cottage" exceeded my expectations. There was ample space for the five adult women traveling together. It was very clean. Loved that there was not only a Keurig but coffee pods to boot! There were many thoughtful toiletries for use if you needed. The basement space is a great gathering space and the backyard well-appointed. The neighborhood was very quiet and well-established.
If I find myself back in Saint Paul, I would return.
Beautiful house to stay with my three daughters for Mother's Day weekend. Excellent amenities, room for all, clean and perfectly kept. My first time with HomeAway, a complete WIN!
A spotless, well appointed home. The perfect stay for a quick getaway with a couple of girlfriends to take in the sights, and enjoy a concert at the Excel Center. We enjoyed the local eateries and found the location an easy drive to Summit Hill, the Cathedral as well as the Como Gardens. The Spring display looked and smelled heavenly!! Our Uber ride to an event at the Excel Center was quick and surprisingly reasonable. Would stay again in a heartbeat!
Very quaint and clean. Perfect for our 1 night stay for 3 couples.
Stayed for 3 nights and everything was wonderful. The home is really well appointed. It seems that every detail for a short/long stay has been addressed. The beds are fantastic after a day of exploring- high end linens and a perfect mattress. Every fixture, furniture and appliance is well appointed and the entire home was SPOTLESS!
The location is spot on. Super easy to navigate and in the heart of a amazing neighborhood.
Kristen was very prompt with my inquiries prior to booking and after when we texted. We will hopefully stay here again soon.
Our neighborhood is called Macalester Groveland (Mac-Groveland) and it's just a few miles from downtown St. Paul. Mac-Groveland is a gem! It boasts three colleges, (Macalester, St. Thomas and St. Catherine's) and has so many terrific bars and restaurants (The Nook, Salut, Bar Brigade, - a new personal fave). The tree-lined streets having charming homes primarily built between the 1920s-1950s. Mac-Groveland is bordered by Summit Avenue with its incredibly rich architectural history to the north, and Randolph Avenue and the Highland Park neighborhood to the south. Summit Avenue is one of the best strolls in the Twin Cities - it has more mansions than any other single street in the country. Mac-Groveland's western border is the Mississippi River which has well-maintained, picturesque walking and biking paths.
Grand Avenue runs east to west through the heart of Mac-Groveland and features unique boutiques (Creative Kidstuff, Bibelot, Garden of Eden, The Cheese Shop - yum!) and old favorites (J Crew, Anthropolgie, Pottery Barn), plus innumerable bars, coffee shops and restaurants (favorites: Punch Pizza - best in the world!, Brasa, French Meadow). Maybe you'll want to come back for Grand Old Day?! It's a huge street fair, music festival and family fun fest in early June.
Our house is located right off of Ayd Mill Road (my favorite "secret" road in St. Paul - it's so, so convenient!). Ayd Mill runs diagonally through St. Paul, connecting Interstate 35E at its southeast end, and it feeds into Selby Avenue on its northwest end (Selby Ave. is a fun destination too - Patina Boutique, Whole Foods, Red Cow). Buses run nearby on both St. Clair and Grand Avenues. We're located about 1.5 miles from the closest light rail (Green Line) station which connects downtown St. Paul with downtown Minneapolis. Uber and Lyft rides are always close by. Nice Ride (bike sharing) has a station just 6 blocks away on Grand Ave.
