Great property, ,mediocre house

  • 3 of 5

We've stayed here for 4-8 weeks every Spring since 2007 when it was a bargain. It was basically a "rustic" cabin with great property amenities. Set back from the street to no road noise, neighbors are distant, no screaming kids in adjoining properties, beach across the street, great breezes on the front porch....but the best thing was the sunny, sunny rear deck and pool area....the best we've seen in over twenty years of staying in Captiva. A bonus is the great dock at the rear, suitable for fishing or just enjoying the breezes while watching ospreys do their thing in Roosevelt Channel, along with dolphins and the occasional manatee...saw one with a calf this year. Bird watchers will enjoy the numerous woodpeckers (red breasted and pilated). There is an osprey nest 50" to the south where you can see the chick from the rear deck and parent ospreys that perch at several places on the property while they eat their catch.

The house borders on primitive and way below every property I've seen...lights held together by duct tape, cabinets with one hinge (for several years), holes in the rotted front door taped over with duct tape (by us!). This year we decided to wash the windows inside and out, removing screens, etc. Wow! what a difference! But it got better this year,,, stained, torn furniture replaced by some thrift store specials, new refrigerator. new flooring, beach chairs. Meanwhile, the price went up about 65%. Better places are available for lessif you ignore the location

Needs Work

  • 2 of 5

We recently rented this home through Royal Shell. The location is incredible and we enjoyed our stay on Captiva. One of our favorite places to visit! However, the house needs a LOT of maintenance and the photos don't reveal the enormous construction project right next door. The heated pool was a big feature for us, but the heater was broken from our arrival on Saturday until Tuesday evening. That left us with a VERY cold pool for 3-1/2 days. We did request an adjustment in our rental bill for not having a working pool and Royal Shell has yet to contact me to even acknowledge my request. The house needs work on lots of little things like sliding glass doors that stick in the track, etc. Its an older home (my guess, built in the late 50's or early 60's) and hasn't seen many improvements since. If you want to be right on the beach and don't mind a home that is more like a simple cottage, than look here. However, I don't think we will rent this property again.
