** Plum Island is a VERY special place -- a wonderful area in which to relax and get away from the rest of the world. It has been written up in Forbes magazine & the New York Times. It is an 11-mile long barrier reef island (2 miles residential, 9 miles wildlife refuge especially well-known to bird-watchers), surrounded by lovely beaches, rivers, a tidal basin and the Atlantic Ocean. Outstanding place to bike ride, walk, hike, fish, sunbathe, swim and do any kind of boating. Only 3 miles from well-known quaint Newburyport with lots of great restaurants, antique shops, visual and performing arts, and weekend activities.

Barbara Hopkinson is the property manager. She has lived on Plum Island most of her life and lives on the ocean there currently. Barbara's background is in the international corporate world, including IBM. She retired and now runs a non-profit, A Butterfly's Journey, helping others with grief recovery. Barbara knows the area well and can answer any questions or get resources as needed.
The following information is from the owner of the house:
I retired four years ago as an administrator at a small college and had lived in the Boston area for many years. I've always considered myself a lover of the ocean and sea. I enjoy kayaking, swimming, sunsets, and barefoot walks on the beach.
Barbara Hopkinson purchased this house in 2000
The following information is from the owner of the house: I originally bought this house to live in, and I lived there year-round. I found Plum Island to be magical and a great place for rejuvenation. The ocean is literally only five minutes away, and there is a wonderful 45-minute walk you can take at low tide from The Basin adjacent to the house around the tip of Plum Island and back along the Atlantic Ocean shore. You can't help but be affected by the beauty of the island and the power of the ocean. Even though Plum Island is less than an hour from Boston, the beaches are not crowded even in high season, and you can feel relaxed and reflective while in the presence of natural beauty.
Plum Island is a paradise for those who love the beach and boating. Entry points to the The Basin for kayaking, sailing, and canoeing are steps away from the house. Beach activities abound on the Atlantic Ocean side. Or you can just relax on the balcony, sipping wine and watching breath-taking sunsets. There are also many other activities nearby. Newburyport is less than ten minutes away by car. It is an old whaling town with restaurants, specialty shops, a playhouse, and a genuine New England quaintness. At the other end of Plum Island from the house is the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. I have bicycled there many times. There are numerous walking paths for hiking. The Refuge is known nationally as a major New England center for its diverse bird population and the many people who come there for bird watching and other wildlife observation.
Close to both beaches , basin and ocean. Stairs were a challenge, because of uneven steps. It is all a bit amateurish: needs some professional touches to make it nice. Kitchen had too much unorganized stuff and it was subsequently hard to find stuff. Great views especially of the sunset.
First I want to say thank you soooo much! Our stay here for the week was fabulous!
The host and Barbara were fantastic right from the get go when we first inquired about the house and Plum Island. Second the house was loaded with everything we needed plus it was very clean modern and extremely comfortable. The minute you walked in the energy and vibes there set us at ease right away.We chose Plum Island because our son was to be married on 7/7/17 at the SEAGLASS in Salisbury, Ma. So instead of us staying in a hotel we chose to rent Basin Zephyr. We held the rehearsal dinner at the CAPRI in Salisbury also .
The one remarkable thing I want to add is we went for a walk every morning and evening with whomever was visiting us. The people on the Island were all friendly , helpful . We even had one gentlemen poke his head over the fence while we were relaxing on the patio asking "hey where's the little guy?" He was referring to my 2 year old grandson who stayed a few nights. Lets just say he charmed all the Islanders! Thank you again for a wonderful experience!
Plum Island is an 11-mile long barrier island just off the shore of Newburyport and Newbury, MA. The island faces the Atlantic Ocean and is linked to the mainland by a causeway/bridge that crosses spectacular tidal marshes and the Parker and Merrimac Rivers. Most of Plum Island is part of the 4,600 acre Parker River Wildlife Refuge and is on a major migratory path for many birds. An Audubon Center for bird-watching is just off-island. The island also has three restaurants, two convenience stores, a liquor store, deep sea fishing and party cruises, a lighthouse, and extensive beautiful sandy beaches. It is a little reminiscent of the movie "The Summer of '42."
Plum Island is conveniently located 10 minutes from the center of Newburyport, with its numerous shops, restaurants, arts, events, and other activities. It is only 45 minutes from Boston and 15 minutes from the New Hampshire border. New York City is about 4 1/2 hours away.
