Who would not want to stay in the middle of a cemetery?
This wonderful old schoolhouse literally in the middle of the cemetery is just a delight. Laura Jacobs the proprietor is an engaging artist who has put her heart and soul into this building and given it new life! There a four spaces you can choose from and all have their charms. Color and artwork abound. All the amenities you would want are present. All the spaces have their own special feel. We stayed in the unique Mad Hatter's Lounge located in the basement of the schoolhouse. The Hatter would be at home here. The old coal room in the basement has been converted to a television extra sleeping space. The cool metal doors make it look like you are entering a castle dungeon. The main sleeping space is bold and bright with a fabulous brass bed as an anchor. The bathroom is not to be missed as it is adorned with Laura's artist touch. A beautiful glass wall mosaic is adorned with three dimensional objects, as is the shower. Alice would be right at home in this space through the looking glass. So with all of this beauty, the serene setting of the cemetery, the affordable cost and close proximity to the town of Hudson NY (You can walk to the downtown in less than 10 minutes) this is the perfect spot for your visit to the area. This is just another place that makes staying in the Hudson Valley such a treat. Oh and I cannot leave out Laura's charming Cockatiel, Tico who is more than happy to greet visitors! Thank you Laura we will be back!
Laura is welcoming, warm, considerate, and interesting. Her art decorates the studio walls (as does the art of her partner) to create a chic vibe. Each studio has its own color scheme. Ours was purple (even the tissue boxes were purple) and we might have been in Prince's guest room. The room was very comfortable-- we kept one window open, never used the air conditioner (in August), and never closed the drapes, as the only folks who could peek in were the ghosts in the cemetery. Laura had condiments in the fridge and shampoo and conditioner in the shower. Each morning she left pastries outside our door. My wife and I were comfortable, and our 11-year-old, especially, enjoyed getting to know and to feed Laura's gorgeous white cockatiel. My wife ran in the cemetery each day. There's a TV if you want to check the news. It's an easy walk to the shops and restaurants on Warren Street. We'll stay with Laura again when we return.
Thank you Michael, not sure how you figured out how to do this ,.since I didnt see an option to comment anywhere!! Loved having you all,
and miss the cute notes fab left on the pastry dish every morn. The building misses your good energy and Tico REALLY misses you like crazy and says thanks for telling me he likes cantaloupe.
Erected in 1900 this Craftsmen's 4 room School House is located in the midst of one of the most gorgeous historic cemeteries in all of America, and a short 7 minute walk into Town and Warren St. Tailored after the cemeteries in Europe, it was created as a park to entice visitors. Many Hudson River School Painters made this their final resting place as well as famous inventors and titans of Industry. It is verily like walking through a 3 D history lesson.
You will have access to this 750 sq.ft. classroom of the School House which has been converted into a studio loft space with a kitchen, bathroom , living space and king size bed. You may also use the washer & dryer located in the basement if you wish. You would be doing yourself a great disadvantage not to explore this wonderful Park Cemetery!I It is a quiet place for contemplation, writing or artful pursuits and it is 3 mere blocks downhill (7 minutes) to Warren street and all its delights!!! This place is also IDEAL for the athletic. There are miles of winding paths everywhere....
No need really for a car, unless you are unable to walk, as Warren is so close but if you do have a car there is ample space to park in our lot. If you are taking the train I would be more than happy to pick you up - yes it is walkable but not preferable with luggage and after a 2 hour train ride! It's only a 2 minute drive to our building which is at the other end of Warren street and across the street from our award winning hospital. We are but a 7 minute walk into town.
