Come bring family or friends and soak up relaxing days at our amazingly beautiful and inviting Missoula Montana retreat home. Built in 2000 the retreat consists of the Main House which has 5 bedrooms (one of which is a large "bonus room"), 3 bathrooms, a beautiful garden room, larger living/dining area and complete fully equipped kitchen.
The extra "Guest House" consists of two private studio-type units named CREEKSIDE and MEADOW . Each unit has a living area, kitchenette, separate sleeping area and bathroom with shower. The kitchenette has sink, small fridge, microwave and coffee-maker but no full cooking facilities. These studio units have two single beds and a queen size futon sleeper-sofa in each unit.
The property is situated on 35 acres in a beautiful mountain meadow, with 2 creeks (Deep Creek and Gilman Creek) running through it. Our home is about a 30 minute county road drive from Missoula. Come sit by the creek. Enjoy family barbecue on one of our two decks. Read a good book in the garden room. Take the kids on a hike. Enjoy a family reunion or just bring the (grand) kids to enjoy a memorable Montana "get-away". If you're in Missoula for a few days or a week, let "Deep Creek" be your home base refuge. Everyone who stays here agrees it's one of the most peaceful places they've ever been.

The Guest House shares a quiet sitting room called the "Lee Library" which can be accessed by either Meadow or Creekside. The library is another room to have some quite time to yourself or sit and chat with family and friends.
Deep Creek Retreat is equipped with a full kitchen with dishes for at least 17 people, silverware, cookware, coffee maker, oven, microwave, full fridge/freezer combo, and dishwasher. We have had "day-groups" of up to 30 use the kitchen to feed a large gathering.

The Garden Room... we like to call it the "Sun Room", is another beautiful living/gathering area with decorative tile flooring, full of windows, 5 large skylights and comfortable wicker chairs.
The main house has 2 large porches: one faces the meadow, one faces Deep Creek. Each has seating and the Meadow porch has a picnic table. The Guest House units each have their own private porch with chairs.
The home is heated by a propane fueled hot-water boiler and there are window air-conditioners, but no central air-conditioning. Even on hot summer days, the mountain air cools off quickly and sleeping at night with the windows open can even be a bit chilly, so you may even use an extra blanket! This is Montana at it's finest!
A Gas Grill is available for use (located in the garage). There is a basketball hoop in the driveway by the garage.
PLEASE READ AND AGREE TO THESE TERMS:
We built our "Deep Creek" home as a Christian Prayer Retreat for small groups to get away and enjoy a peaceful time together. Now we're making our home available to you as well! Because Deep Creek is designed for peace and quiet we have designed our home in such a way as to avoid lots of distractions. The property sits in an area where internet reception is only available via satellite dish service, so we limit internet usage to web browsing and checking sites like Facebook and email. Our bandwidth is capped each month and does not allow for online gaming and downloading of large files or video/audio streaming. So, please be aware that you'll be away from heavy use of "the web" for a while.
We do not have cable or satellite TV at Deep Creek. A large flat-screen TV and DVD player is available. Cell phone reception is available, but spotty at Deep Creek. Phone reception is more dependable a couple of miles down the road. There is a telephone at Deep Creek.
We know how connected everyone is via TV/internet these days, so we want to make sure you understand Deep Creek is a bit of a retreat from these, as well as the craziness of every-day life! Please book your stay at our home agreeing to the above. Thanks.
We truly look forward to sharing one of Montana’s greatest treasure retreat homes with you!
Jim and Suzanne
Jim and Suzanne have lived in Montana since 1977. They met at the University of Montana in Missoula.
Jim grew up in Minnesota and dreamed of living "in the mountains" some day. He runs a family business in Missoula and loves being involved with the music ministry at their church.
Suzanne came to Missoula from North Dakota to pursue a degree in recreation resource management. She is a violin teacher and loves being a part of the Missoula Symphony Orchestra.
Jim and Suzanne have 6 children and 5 grandchildren. They are thankful they "get to live in western Montana and be a part of this beautiful big sky country. "
Jim and Suzanne purchased this house in 2000
We purchased the 35 acre Deep Creek property in order to build a Christian prayer retreat home for small groups and individuals. We completed construction of the main house and 2 bedroom guest house in April 2000. Since then hundreds of people have found Deep Creek a place of peace, refuge, refreshing, prayer and reconnecting with the Lord.
This peaceful mountain meadow retreat is the fulfillment of a vision we have had for many years. We are now happy to share it with you. We trust you will find "Deep Creek" peaceful and refreshing as well.
Glad it didn't snow because the road would have been hard for the cars (not suvs)
The house was very well equipped for our family's needs. The house was everything we envisioned from the description and pictures. We enjoyed hiking the mountains and watching the wildlife in the meadow. The house was clean and well maintained. We would recommend this to all who are looking for a place of rest away from the busyness of the city!
Very pretty property. We stayed there with 10 adults and 8 children and were very comfortable. The property was child friendly. We enjoyed bike riding and hiking on the logging roads around the property. I loved feeling like we were out in the middle of nowhere! It was a great place to have a family reunion. The only complaints we had were all the flies in the afternoon (outside) but we mitigated that by just spending time outside in the morning and coming inside for games, or heading down the road to the river for the afternoon. My husband and brother-in-laws did complain about it being a little too warm in the main sitting room in the afternoon, but the majority of us were fine. Overall this was a wonderful vacation. The kitchen was well-stocked, there was enough seating, showers were warm, and the bedrooms all had their own A.C. units and fans, so we all slept very comfortable at night. This was the first time we have done something like this as a family and I think everyone came away very pleased. The money we spent was well worth it and I was very happy with our decision to stay at the Deep Creek Retreat this summer!
Seven seniors rested comfortably in the beautiful setting. We held a memorial service by the gurgling creek, in the shadows of the cottonwoods overlooking the waving grasses in the meadow to say good by to our sister who died last year. A lovely setting for this plus all the fun we enjoyed together. A great place for my out of town/state friends.
Our hosts, Jim and Suzanne, were most accommodating. Ask for more comfy living chairs--they arrived, mention the need for an extra coffee pot for the decaf drinkers--it arrived. They even drove me to Deep Creek to give me a pre-view several months ago.
We slept on comfortable beds, enjoyed the range of rooms and the fully stocked kitchen and exploited wonderful views of the mountains and sky, Easy access to Missoula.
This home was perfect for our family gathering. We spent 5 nights with family, playing board games and lawn games, cooking large meals, going on walks, and going into town a couple of times. It is definitely a "retreat" with little to no internet access or phone service, but if that doesn't bother you, then I would highly recommend staying at this home! It has plenty of space with big bedrooms filled with many beds to accommodate families. From the home, you can't see any other homes or cars driving by. The sky and mountain scenery is gorgeous. The home is filled with many doors and big windows to bring the outdoors in. It is very serene and relaxing. The owners provide plenty of towels, blankets, and kitchen supplies. The drive to the home from downtown Missoula is about 30 minutes, most of which is on a well-maintained gravel county road. The only thing that could have made the home more "comfortable" is typical family room furniture, i.e. couches and other comfortable seating. There were times we wanted to relax in the family room, and the furniture in there consists of a futon and many soft dining chairs, not great for lounging. If we ever find ourselves back in Missoula, we would definitely want to stay there again.
I've known the Hartzells my whole life and I've spent countless weekends out at their place up Deep Creek. I can say that I've never had a bad experience and here and it remains one of my favorite places to go and relax. It's peaceful and beautiful. The true Montana experience!
