This landmark property continues a 175 year tradition of welcoming travelers to Portland with a first floor, 2 bedroom flat, modern appointments, and parking. Located perfectly harbor side where the historic West End meets the Old Port.
A two year preservation style rehabilitation completed late in 2014 saved the historic details while adding distinctively respectful modern touches. The original floors were restored. The original moldings, fireplace casings and doors were tediously preserved. Exposed brick was reclaimed.
Nine foot ceilings and southern exposure will brighten even the coldest winter day. Items found hidden in walls and under floorboards are on display as decoration and help tell the 175 year story. For nearly two centuries the Captain Hasty House overlooked the harbor, welcoming mariners and travelers. Stay in a part of Portland's rich maritime history.
I willfully and purposefully wandered far, long into my twenties. I will always cherish the journey. When I stumbled upon the City of Portland, Maine, her icy cliffs rising from the sea, a kinship I never expected, cemented. I proudly consider myself an adopted son of these brick sidewalks, and I seek to share all the special locales to which they lead. My partner Andrew and I live on the second floor of the Captain Hasty House in our own comfortably minimalist flat. We make our lives here, and they grow a little more magical every day. If you have questions, we have answers. If you seek solitude, we understand as we travel for the same purpose. I've spent 15 years rehabilitating derelict and forgotten properties and this 2 family home is the one of which I am most proud. I relish the opportunity to offer our first floor flat , our city, and welcome you to a place that feels like home.
Gary Wagner purchased this apartment in 2013
Gary was a pleasure to deal with. He made everything easy for us and the personalized touches were a plus. The place is great--historic but completely updated, clean, and comfortable! Great location too. Would highly recommend!!
Gary has thought of everything with this house and how he runs his vrbo. He has restored this historic house while keeping a lot of the original finishes. The location is ideal since its in a quiet neighborhood with a couple of local restaurants, while still an easy walk to the heart of Portland.
Gary has outfitted this home like he is running a B@B, minus the breakfast delivery. Everything one needs for a short or long stay, including handy local information and recommendations. The welcome wine found in the fridge is a great touch as well. If you are lucky, you might run into Gary for a few minutes and enjoy talking with him about the house and the local area.
My family came together in Maine and selected this rental as our home base. We all loved it. We had fresh cut roses on the dinner table when we got there. Chilled beer in the refrigerator. Shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom. Fresh fruit and even coffee and creme awaited. They out did themselves in making this a home rather than a hotel. We would very much recommend this place to family and friends.
My family and I had the pleasure of staying at this beautiful house for a weekend. It inside of the flat was very clean and well decorated. There was a bottle of wine and chilled glasses waiting for us which was very thoughtful. The location of the house was great as we where able to walk to all the shops and restaurants of old port. I would highly recommend this home away location as the location, flat, and hosts where great!
You can not do better than this perfectly located rental in downtown Portland. Just a short walk to the Old Port, but nestled into a quiet, friendly neighborhood with a charming cafe across the street and hip restaurants and markets nearby. There's even a view of the Casco Bay Draw Bridge from one bedroom window. The unit is immaculate. No detail was overlooked in the renovation or the preparation for your stay. Gary is an excellent host and has provided a detailed list of local recommendations for your visit as well as a fascinating history of the building which was uncovered during the remodel. Off street parking, private entrance, hardwood floors and tons of sunlight. There's even an extra-deep bathtub for your soaking pleasure. Highly recommended!
Where do I even begin? This adorable 2 bedroom flat far exceeded my expectations. It had a cozy and charming vibe to it that makes you feel right at home. Not to mention the hospitality of host, Gary! Upon our arrival, we were greeted with fresh flowers, chilled glasses and a delicious adult beverage waiting for us. Gary was also kind enough to give us excellent local places for good food and cocktails. Right next to this flat is a great little eatery with a cool vibe. We went in February and even with the cold air outside, the warmth of the hospitality took that chill away. (I almost don't want to give such a glowing review, in fear of this place filling up quickly.) We will certainly be back in the summer!
The captain Hasty House is walking distance to most Portland attractions in a very safe and historic neighborhood. Our neighbor is the 3 acre Harborview Park with stunning views of the Casco Bay Bridge and working waterfront. There is a coffee shop across the street and a restaurant immediately next door
