Aloha! E komo mai. Nou ka hale. Welcome to our Big Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our house your home away from home during your next visit.
Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.
Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!
A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.
We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We currently live in Texas, but our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.
Matt or Tara Hubner purchased this cottage in 2011
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Kilauea Crater overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.
Review from TripAdvisor. "Wow! Our stay at Hale Hubner was amazing! It was more then what we expected. Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 nights, it has everything for a long stay for 2 persons. The location is very private in the forest of Vulcano and the large windows showed this view in every room. The neighbourhood is very friendly with neightbourwatch. We loved everything. The friendly e-mails from the owners and personal touch with pictures of the family made us feel at home. Beautiful interieur with a relaxing sofa. Good wifi. The large balcony including a new gass bbq and easy chairs where very relaxing and convinient. The bed was soft with seperate electric blankets on the matras, for extra heating. Because I'm always cold I turned it on just a half an hour before jumping into bed, my husband liked it just the way it was. We didn't use the woodstove, but I can imagen the use of it is very cosy because it can be cold in the evening and night. The kitchen is fully suplied. If we ever return in the future we will definately stay here again. The town is small, but you have to visit Greg and Joyce with their kids at cafe Ohi'a to enjoy a delicious sandwich for lunch. Their kindness warmed our harts."
This is a cute little treehouse-feeling home in an area with few options. We are glad we stayed there and its proximity to fabulous Volcano Park is the main reason. Big windows out to the rainforest were wonderful too. A couple of stars off for a few inconveniences: a fireplace stove that just wouldn't work for us. The rainforest is damp and wood is hard to start without a Firelog, only one was provided (at $5) and there were none at the town store. Its the main source of heat on chilly days. The coffee pot was dinky - two cups at a time. One roll of toilet paper provided, ONE. No paper towels. I suggest providing more Firelogs, more toilet paper, and at least a few paper towels and asking $25 more for cost. One last suggestion for readers: do not try to find this place at night!!! It has been done, I'm sure, But it would take a few years off your life.
This home has it all! Convenience to Volcano NP, clean, cozy, quiet. Matt and Tara have gone out of their way to make it an enjoyable and homey place to stay. I will go back for sure!!
What a wonderful place to stay. Follow the directions they gave you it is a little hard to find. *LOL* but worth it.
The house was perfect for my wife and myself. Very comfortable for two people and close to the national park. It has a very nice deck at tree top level if you enjoy sitting outdoors eyeball to eyeball with the birds. The weather was warm during our visit but got pretty cool at night. We didn't need the heated mattress but I can see how it could be very useful in the colder months. It works very well.
I'm not sure how well four people would fit. I suppose the sofa must fold out into a bed. That probably works for kids but if you're going with another couple, you should know that there is only one bathroom and access to it is through the master BR and the walls don't go all the way to the high ceiling so if privacy is high on your list, it might not be a great fit.
You definitely want to buy most of what you will need in the Hilo area before you head into the mountains. Prices are crazy at the local stores and selections are pretty limited. You will regret not buying your wine beforehand. There are several local restaurants nearby (no Golden Arches or anything else the kids might recognize) but we found the best place for dinner is the lodge within the national park that provides spectacular views of the sun setting over the Volcano. We weren't expecting the effect of the sun setting through the gases emitted by the Volcano. Don't miss it.
All in all, the place was perfect for us and I would highly recommend it for a couple traveling alone. It is very comfortable and very private. if you're looking for a romantic getaway, you won't do much better.
This location was the perfect distance away from Volcanoes National Park. We were able to explore during the day, come back and relax, and go out again for dinner without feeling like we were constantly driving. The cottage was spacious and cozy at the same time. The cottage was thoughtfully stocked with really useful supplies like shopping bags, a cooler, travel coffee mugs, etc. We can't vouch for the tv because we were exploring too much to use it but the wifi was good! For full disclosure, the bathroom has 4 walls, but not a ceiling. The bathroom, kitchen, dining and living rooms all share the same high ceiling, so that was a little different if you really value bathroom privacy, but not really a dealbreaker. We also highly suggest you follow the Hubner's advice and do any grocery shopping in Hilo and while you're at it, hit up the Farmer's Market if you can, tasty and interesting produce at good prices. We really enjoyed our stay in the area and at Hale Hubner!
Enjoy Birdwatching, Stargazing, Lava Viewing, Photography, Cultural Activities, Farmers Markets, Iron Man Triathlon, Merrie Monarch Festival, Live Music, Whale Watching, and more! House is approximately 1.5 miles from Highway 11.
