Aloha! E komo mai. Nou ka hale. Welcome to our Big Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our house your home away from home during your next visit.
Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.
Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!
A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.
We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We currently live in Texas, but our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.
Matt or Tara Hubner purchased this cottage in 2011
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Kilauea Crater overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.
Review from TripAdvisor. "Wow! Our stay at Hale Hubner was amazing! It was more then what we expected. Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 nights, it has everything for a long stay for 2 persons. The location is very private in the forest of Vulcano and the large windows showed this view in every room. The neighbourhood is very friendly with neightbourwatch. We loved everything. The friendly e-mails from the owners and personal touch with pictures of the family made us feel at home. Beautiful interieur with a relaxing sofa. Good wifi. The large balcony including a new gass bbq and easy chairs where very relaxing and convinient. The bed was soft with seperate electric blankets on the matras, for extra heating. Because I'm always cold I turned it on just a half an hour before jumping into bed, my husband liked it just the way it was. We didn't use the woodstove, but I can imagen the use of it is very cosy because it can be cold in the evening and night. The kitchen is fully suplied. If we ever return in the future we will definately stay here again. The town is small, but you have to visit Greg and Joyce with their kids at cafe Ohi'a to enjoy a delicious sandwich for lunch. Their kindness warmed our harts."
We stayed 2 nights here, and enjoyed the birdsongs in the morning, the stars at night, and the ease of visiting the volcano and points east. One day we drove to the coast, the other we spent roaming the volcano park... Great space and amenities! Thank you, Tara and Matt, and Kathy the caretaker, for making sure we had all we needed. Mahalo lui noa!
This is a lovely house, well-furnished and in a beautiful setting. It was a perfect place to return to after exploring Volcano. Only wish we could have stayed longer.
Exactly what we were looking for. Clean, close to the park and that cozy cabin feel yet with an excellent bed, kitchen and shower. We loved the wood stove, the huge windows and the rainforest outside. The use of your IPad was convenient and appreciated. laundry was great to have. I honestly can't think of anything I would have wanted differently other than more time. It was perfect! We have the world to travel so I don't know when we will be back to the Big Island but I have already recommended Hale Hubner as the best place on the Big Island to stay while enjoying Volcanoes National Park. Hilo isn't to far away either. If we are ever back your way I will plan my trip around availability on booking your place. IT"S THAT GOOD. Definitely the highlight of our time on The Big Island.
Thank you for everything, it made our vacation great.
Our stay was wonderful. They have it stocked with everything you need. Great location. Close to Hilo, the National Park and the Tidal Ponds. Make sure you drive the old highway from Pahoa right to where the lava starts. It is breathtaking. Do NOT arrive in the dark the first time you arrive. You are in a jungle setting with only your headlights. We would definitely stay here again!
We really enjoyed our stay at the Hale Hubner! It is perfectly located for going to Volcano National Park at any time, day or night. The little cabin had a great deck and an amazing kitchen - it had a gas stove (perfect!) and came stocked with many spices, appliances, etc. I had a great time cooking so many meals there. I do think this place might be more appropriate for a couple or small family - its open air design doesn't lend well to lots of privacy between couples, for example. But it was perfect for my husband and me! I would recommend this place to anyone.
We enjoyed our stay at Hale Hubner which was located just minutes from Volcano National Park. The house is nestled in a quiet setting within a fern forest. We followed Matt's directions to the house and had no problem finding it. They have a nice deck with a great barbecue to grill your favorite meal. The kitchen was well supplied with whatever your needs are for cooking. Volcano is at 4,000 feet elevation so mornings can be chilly. There is an electric stove in the bedroom and wood burning stove in the living room to keep things warm. They have a dehumidifier available to assist in pulling the damp air from the house. The weather would warm up by mid morning and by noon we were opening windows to allow a cool breeze to flow through the house.
We purchased both Dura flame logs and firewood at Lowes in Kona. It was about 1/2 the price you would pay at the Volcano store. Dura Flame logs are the answer to getting the fire started. We also purchased extra toilet paper and paper towels as Matt had suggested on his web page. We found Ace Hardware in Volcano had the best price for eggs and cheese. There is also a Military base in Volcano National Park that has a store in which you can find some items cheaper than the Volcano store.
All in all, Hale Hubner was a great place to stay while exploring the many wonders of Volcano National Park!
Enjoy Birdwatching, Stargazing, Lava Viewing, Photography, Cultural Activities, Farmers Markets, Iron Man Triathlon, Merrie Monarch Festival, Live Music, Whale Watching, and more! House is approximately 1.5 miles from Highway 11.
