Aloha! E komo mai. Nou ka hale. Welcome to our Big Island home, or hale (pronounced HA-LAY). Located in Volcano Village, and just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, we invite you to make our house your home away from home during your next visit.
Hale Hubner is perfect for friends, couples, and small groups or families that wish to experience the Puna lifestyle at its best. We also offer a wonderful retreat for Kama'aina looking to get away. Comfortably nestled in the lush hapu'u fern and ohia rainforest, you will find our location offers relaxing comfort and privacy all the while keeping you close to the variety nearby attractions the Big Island has to offer.
Our house is a cozy 750 sq ft studio-style custom-built 1 bed/1 bath that sleeps 2-4 people comfortably. The warm pine wood interior naturally juxtaposes the green views of lush vegetation visible from all the large picture windows throughout the house. A spacious sun deck greets you as you exit the house, and provides excellent views of the vibrant stars during the dark evenings. On clear nights, the glow of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater is just visible through the tree line!
A master bed area is walled off for your privacy, and a queen-size futon in the main living area folds out to provide a second bed for additional travelers. The main living/sleeping area is located on the second level of the house and is only accessible by stairs; therefore, we are unfortunately not accessible for visitors with disabilities that prevent the climbing of steps. For families looking to stay with us, we prefer there be at least one adult per child, if possible.
We strive to provide a warm and inviting stress-free yet affordable alternative to the big resorts. We hope you like what you see here and choose Hale Hubner for you next visit to the Big Island. Mahalo!

We are Tara and Matt Hubner. We currently live in Texas, but our hearts reside on the Big Island. We purchased our house in 2011 in hopes that we will live there permanently one day. We try to return as often as possible, but gladly open our home to you when we cannot be there to enjoy it.
Matt or Tara Hubner purchased this cottage in 2011
The National Park and the volcanoes of the Big Island hold a special place in our hearts. We love all that the park has to offer in its natural wonders. The town of Volcano is nicely situated adjacent to the park, but there is also so much more to do nearby that it makes for the perfect location to enjoy the Big Island. We love the beaches and the snorkeling/diving all within the distance of a short drive. We love the diverse nature of the people of the area and the aloha spirit that they truly share with those who don't try and bring the mainland go-go-go attitude with them. We love the nearby markets that you can find on a daily basis. We also enjoy the shops and modern amenities of the nearby towns and Hilo. It's hard to beat the cool weather at 4000 ft elevation. So whether you're interested outdoor activities, peace and relaxation, or restaurants and shopping; there's everything one needs within just a quick drive from here. All this plus the fact that there are little to no crowds makes it our favorite place in the world!
One of our favorite things to do is drive out at night to the Kilauea Crater overlook. It's only a 10-15 minute drive to the crater rim from our house, and the views of the glowing caldera are mesmerizing. We try to go out every night that we can, and often there are people playing music or dancing hula for Madame Pele, and this makes it quite an experience. We've found that on clear nights it is possible to see the glow from Kilauea from our lanai and from the back of our property. We enjoy ordering takeout from some of the nearby restaurants and dining on our lanai under the stars.
Review from TripAdvisor. "Wow! Our stay at Hale Hubner was amazing! It was more then what we expected. Unfortunately we only stayed there for 2 nights, it has everything for a long stay for 2 persons. The location is very private in the forest of Vulcano and the large windows showed this view in every room. The neighbourhood is very friendly with neightbourwatch. We loved everything. The friendly e-mails from the owners and personal touch with pictures of the family made us feel at home. Beautiful interieur with a relaxing sofa. Good wifi. The large balcony including a new gass bbq and easy chairs where very relaxing and convinient. The bed was soft with seperate electric blankets on the matras, for extra heating. Because I'm always cold I turned it on just a half an hour before jumping into bed, my husband liked it just the way it was. We didn't use the woodstove, but I can imagen the use of it is very cosy because it can be cold in the evening and night. The kitchen is fully suplied. If we ever return in the future we will definately stay here again. The town is small, but you have to visit Greg and Joyce with their kids at cafe Ohi'a to enjoy a delicious sandwich for lunch. Their kindness warmed our harts."
We were very pleased with our stay at Hale Hubner. The directions were very easy to follow and we were glad we arrived during the day. The house is very convenient to Volcanoes National Park. We are usually "stay in the park" people and this was a wonderful option because it was so close and we could use the kitchen to make breakfast and pack lunches for the day. It was also nice to have the extra space to relax after a busy day exploring the area. The patio had amazing star viewing. The temperature does drop quite a bit from day to evening. We had brought long pants and jackets and we were plenty warm. If we were to come back we would stay here again. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us.
We stayed three nights at hale hubner and enjoyed it very much. The location was great (10 mins from volcano park) and about 45mins-hour into hilo. Feels like there's no one around and so private! The house itself had everything we needed. The electric blankets on the bed were just perfect for the chilly mornings. It had such a homely feel to it. The property was very clean too! One of the cleanest we've stayed In so thankyou Kathy! Thanks matt and Tara for the perfect retreat :)
My husband and I stayed here in February and found the cottage to be exactly what we were looking for. It was cozy, well equipped and very comfortable. We spent most of our time exploring the park and hiking to the lava so the location was perfect. We loved that it was secluded and it felt like our private hideaway. It is chilly at night so definitely bring a light jacket or sweatshirt. The bedding did a wonderful job of keeping us warm at night. There is a wood stove in the main living area to use if you get cold but we never needed it. Thank you for a great stay!
This was our first VRBO rental experience and we couldn't have been more satisfied. First and foremost, Hale Hubner was clean and bright (really no need for any lights on during the day), two very important criteria for any rental. The size was perfect for the two of us and almost all amenities were provided. Hot water was plentiful and the water pressure was great. The electric mattress pad was an appreciated addition for a couple of cool March night. Although we didn't take advantage of it, the DVD library is a nice touch. All the electronics including the two TVs, weather station, front door lock, etc. added to the convenience.
The location is very convenient to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park which was our primary destination. The home offers lots of privacy and the neighborhood is very quiet. The gate provides a further measure of security.
Finally, we really appreciate you accommodating our dogs - they were very comfortable during our short stay. My wife wrote some positive comments in your guestbook and we found it so interesting that people from all over the world have stayed at Hale Hubner!
See the volcano at night time was great. At Volcano National Park.

After 8 days on the ocean on the Kona side, listening to the non stop wave action, Hale Hubner was quiet, private and a bit cooler. The house is well described & clean, communication was good and we had no issues... The windows and the deck were wonderful. We enjoyed a fire in the wood stove and used the BBQ on the deck as well. Everything worked as expected. I would not recommend checking in when it's dark, it is a very dark road and I was glad that we got there in the day light. The proximity to the park is great, very close. Keep in mind, it can be cooler here, so a sweatshirt is a good addition to your suitcase. The sheets were a little worn on the bed, but it was comfortable and we slept well. The entire house is not closed off to the ceiling, which gives it a nice open feel, you may hear your housemates using the toilet, not a big deal, but kinda unusual. It could have used a bigger coffeepot for 2 adults, it was a small drip machine. But, those are small observations, we had a great time, really enjoyed the house and the deck was amazing. We would return here if we were to stay in this area again. Thanks!
Enjoy Birdwatching, Stargazing, Lava Viewing, Photography, Cultural Activities, Farmers Markets, Iron Man Triathlon, Merrie Monarch Festival, Live Music, Whale Watching, and more! House is approximately 1.5 miles from Highway 11.
