3 double bedroom cortijo, 10 mins from Orgiva, amazing views 150m above valley.

Los Olivos is a self catering cortijo (villa) set within the grounds of 'Finca El Gales', a 5 acre relaxed olive, almond and fig plantation located on the southern foothills of the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range. Los Olivos has private access and its location offers guests stunning 360 degree views. It is the perfect secluded location for a 'get away from it all' holiday. Only 10 minutes drive or a 40 minute walk to the busy market town of Orgiva, you can access some excellent restaurants, tapas bars (still free in the province of Granada) all amenities, and the lively Thursday street market. Los Olivos is surrounded by various terraces, a totally private pool and a large covered patio with a bbq. Outside dinning furniture, sunloungers, beach chairs, shade and pool toys are provided by us. Mother Nature has provided the cleanest air in Europe, views to die for and the flora and fauna of southern Spain (watch out for the eagles! ). We fell in love with this area, will you?

Outside: Los Olivos is set in a 5 acre site so guests are free to roam, and explore. A 40 sqm covered patio, with views across the valley is the perfect place to enjoy al fresco dinning, relaxing with a good book in the cooling mountain breezes, or build a playdo elephant if you are 4!!. Sunloungers, beach chairs, plastic cups and plates are available for your use around the pool which is completely private and not overlooked at all. The pool is fully tiled, cleaned once a week and filtered every day and is open weather permitting from April to October - It is covered with a safety cover at all other times.

Los Olivos has its own private track some 400 meters from the owners house which as with all rural tracks in Spain it´s bumpy in places, but passable by all cars. Our main Cerro Negro track has had the first km concreted (Sep 2008) so its then only 700m to the owners house which is well maintained. There is no passing traffic as we are at the end of a very quiet track, the nearest neigbour is about 600m away. It really is as tranquil as this area gets, yet its only 10 minutes, 4km (by car) to the village of Orgiva which has everything you would need for your holiday.

We are always looking to improve the garden areas (as if the views are not enough ! ), and have added two new terraces to the rear of the house in 2010 and planted cherrys, lemons, oranges, plums, peach, pear, various flowers including spanish jasmine, bougainvillea, hibiscus, ivy, honeysuckle, red and white trumpets, and various others which i can't name (but liked the look of. We have also planted buffalo grass (no small task on an Andalucian hill side ) around the house on the lower terraces, its into its 2nd year and starting to cover nicely. Figs, almonds and olives grow all around and anything may be picked and eaten when in season.

We added a large chicken run last year, 2011 and now have 4 different types of cockrels and around 20 hens. Fresh organic eggs are almost always available, and we are also breeding for meat birds at the moment so fresh organic chicken is on the cards !

Next year we are looking (time permitting ) to add a few pigs and boost vegtable production, so the small holding seems to be getting bigger ! Come and enjoy.

Perfect get away

I booked this property for a short stay for my partners birthday, we were traveling across the coast of Spain for a week staying in hotels but I wanted to do something different for a couple of days and Los Olivos certainly gave us what we were looking for- a break from busy hotels, an authentic Spanish experience and the seclusion we desired.

Although the property is secluded and private, if you follow the directions Ieuan sends you will find it easily. The last couple Kms of the drive is a little unnerving but well worth it- if you're hiring a car I'd recommend full protection, your car will be absolutely fine but just for peace of mind! We drove up and down from the villa to the town about 3 times in our stay and didn't have any issues with the drive.

Within the first half an hour of arriving we regretted our decision to only stay 2 nights and even looked into cancelling our hotel and asking to stay another night but unfortunately we couldn't cancel the hotel- very disappointing. If you're going to book Los Olivos I'd recommend at least a week!

The house has everything you need for a blissful break, the pool and surrounding space is perfect but without doubt the views are the best part- we spent every waking minute outside just enjoying the peace and quiet and watching the sun come up and go down. When we did go inside we were very comfortable there too as the bed we very large and the house all very clean.

There is a barbecue which we used both nights and a dining area outside which is lovely- the shop in the village has everything you need and there are restaurants if you'd rather eat out.

Finally I have to thank our very friendly hosts, Ieuan who greeted us there and was very helpful and welcoming- the family live in another property on the land (which is down a hill and fairly distant so no need to worry about disturbing each other) although you're completely left alone and private they are just there if you need them. As well as the human hosts the three charming dogs were just as lovely- the friendliest dogs with as much character as they have energy. They greeted us at the door on our final morning which only made it harder to leave!

We're hoping to return next year but we'll definitely be looking to stay for longer :)

We Loved It!

We stayed at El Gales for just over 2 weeks. The owners were flexible with the dates we wanted to stay which was very helpful.

El Gales is fairly remote which was exactly what we were looking for. The house has fantastic views with a lovely pool and has all facilities you need for a stress free holiday. The house was very clean, comfortable bed, plenty of towels and we received some basic food items to welcome us (very pleased as we arrived on a Sunday).

If you are looking for somewhere to stay that offers peace and quiet, without being too far away from the town (although not in walking distance) we would thoroughly recommend El Gales. The owners live further down the same road and are there if you need any advice or help.

Orgiva itself has all facilities you may need; supermarket, butcher, bakery etc and also good places to eat. Our favourite was El Viejo Molino which serves very good tapas and Menu del Dia - which is excellent value. We also ate there in the evening on a couple of occasions and they have a large choice of very well cooked and presented food.

We have been to this area before so did spend a lot of time just relaxing by the pool, but did go to the beach (about 45 minutes away). We found Solabrena about the best - good parking, well in June anyway, and plenty of places to eat. We drove up the Sierra Nevada and then walked until we got to the snow. We also walked the Caminito del Rey. Excellent day albeit think twice if you don't like heights!

We would not hesitate to recommend El Gales, we loved our holiday. The owners were perfect hosts and we hope to visit again.

We loved it!

It's a great place to stay if you are looking for a relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings. We had a lovely time with our two very young children, who had a great time playing with the owners' dogs and swimming in the pool. Ieuan and Sonia are so welcoming and helpful, and they even provided us with some children's toys, which went down very well. The views are even more stunning than in the pictures. We highly recommend it!

Peaceful with secluded pool and wonderful views

If you are looking for a 'do it nothing' rural holiday home with a pool, view and very helpful owners (and their appreciative dogs) this is a great choice. Los Olivos is well equiped (ask about plans for a dishwasher). If you feel enthused to expereince the culture of Granada it is less than an hour away. Following walking tracks between Alpujarra's villages is great exercise too.

Magical 10 days at los Olivos

10 magical days at los Olivos. It was very hard to leave. The vview from the terrace and the pool are breathtaking. We were looking for peace and quiet and comfort and we found it. Beds are very comfortable and the property is well appointed. Ieuan and Sonia could not have been more helpful. We will return, no doubt about it. Yes the track is a little steep but you soon get used to it and the climb means you get the best views and sunsets.

Exactly what we were looking for!

We're a group of friends who walk together in the mountains twice a year, and to celebrate our 20th year we decided to head out of the UK to somewhere where we could pretty much rely on good weather for a few days. We found this property on Owners Direct and right from the start, had a good feel about it. Ieuan was helpful with all our early enquiries, the booking went smoothly (and turned out to be good VFM), and just about every aspect of our trip was exactly what we had hoped for. The property is at the top of a steep and fairly rough track - nervous drivers be warned - but has great views over the valley and mountains, and is very well placed for mountain walks. The mountains themselves are wonderful, and although route finding can be confusing, we managed three excellent round walks; two from Capeleira and one from near Sportujar. Walking along the acequias was a particular delight. We mostly cooked for ourselves in the property, which had everything we needed, but also treated ourselves to a great meal in Orgiva one night (at Amazara - recommended). Sitting outside on the patio watching the sunset, with a cool beer in hand, is just about the best way to end a day of walking, and this is a great place to do it.

Owner's Response: Thanks Pete and Friends, we are so glad you have enjoyed the wonderful area we call home !!! It really is a place to get away from it all and indeed enjoy spectacular views. The access in the spring can sometimes be a bit bumpy due to the rains, but we do maintain the track after the spring rains have finished. The main (first 1.2km is now all concreted and then its just 600m up to our house, which I go over with my digger to make sure access is as easy as possible. Having said that the phrase ' nervous drivers beware!! ' is quite true. The Alpujarras is a mountain region and many roads hug the hillsides offering breathtaking views ( although not so much for the driver !! ) We don't believe anywhere in this area offers such peace and tranquility and yet is so close ( 10 minutes) to Orgiva, which offers all amenities required for a wonderful holiday. Thanks for the recommendation on the walking guide Pete, I'll order one of them to go with the rest of the information in the holiday home. We hope to see you all again !

Los Olivos is set in an area abundant with natural beauty, the Sierra Nevada National and natural parks, La Alpujarra valley, Amazing bird life (eagles around the villa) , Lanjaron spa town, the famous 'Pueblos Blancos' of Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira. Walking in the mountains, horse riding in the snow, star gazing and dreaming of a life forgotten!. For the more adventurous paragliding, mountain climbing, hang-gliding, mountain biking, quads, guided 4WD. Or just sit by the pool with a glass of Rioja and a good book!. further afield Granada is only 1 hour away with the amazing Alhambra Palace and gardens, Albahicin old town, Cathedral, water park and excellent shopping. Above Granada the ski resort offers excellent skiing for all levels, and its possible to be on the beach in the afternoon, after a morning sking. The beaches of Motril are 30 minutes away and the resorts of Salobreña and Almuñecar 5-15 minutes further on.

Acces to our house is 4 kms from our village of Orgiva, the final 700m is on a track which is maintained and passable by all cars, the guest house is then 400m more on our land. Ample parking is provided at the house.

  • All bedrooms have wooden shuttered windows, double wardrobes, bedside tables, (chest of drawers in main bedroom), and lamps. They are dressed for all seasons with duvets and fans. All linen is provided. The main bedroom has a top quaility pocket sprung mattress as a good nights sleep is very important, comments have included - thats the best sleep i've had in two years and i want to change the locks and stay forever !!!!! The four single beds have top quaility latex foam mattresses and have had similar comments.

Notes:
We have tried to make Los Olivos as child friendly as possible. The fire has a guard which can be fitted or removed,the main patio and pool area is fenced and gated. We provide toys for young kids, travel cots, booster/high seats, also a pushchair and babysitting can be arranged. A welcome pack is provided with basics (tea, coffee, milk, bread, etc). Max, Toby and our new boy - Yogi (2015) 'del campo' live at the finca (our lovely dogs) they've grown with our kids and are very friendly and will become your best friends if you feed them !. We run an organic site, no chemicals are used on the olive and fruit trees or vegetables at all. Top quality single estate oil, seasonal vegetables and some fruit is available at various times of the year. Smoking is of course allowed outside and ashtrays are provided, but not in the house please.
