THE GALLERY HOUSE - A Sanctuary by the Sea

Enjoy the beauty of Big Sur in this unique redwood, rock & glass oceanfront cliff-side guesthome, that is embraced by tall cypress and Monterey pines, on a gently sloping rolling green lawn to the Pacific’s edge.

This guesthome consists of a living/dining room, kitchen, one bedroom and a bathroom with shower & dressing room attached. The bedroom is a perfect couples romantic getaway for 2, with its queen size bed and ocean view, or use the single size sofa bed in the living room and the queen bed in the bedroom for 2 friends.

Relax by the fire, enjoy the chaise lounges on the sun-drenched southwest facing stone patio with fantastic ocean views. We also are just over a mile away from the famed Esalen Institute for hot springs bathing, workshops, and their world renowned massage treatments. Enjoy the many galleries, shops & cafes nearby.

Unplug from the cell phone and the computer and simply relax, renew, reflect and retreat in this stunning location in Big Sur with nearby hiking trails, galleries and fine dining for your enjoyment. A perfect place for a personal retreat, meditating, practicing yoga, reading, creating art, writing poetry or allowing your next book to flow through you.

Or perhaps you will want to just unwind in nature enjoying the dolphins dancing off the coast or the seasonal passage of the whales. Sit on the bench at the cliff edge and delight in the sea otters playing below as the hawks and often condors soar high above.

Spend time with your sweetheart in a special place for just the two of you. Come renew your love in the perfect romantic anniversary spot. Reconnect with an old friend in our natural environment. Or perhaps you just need time alone, away from it all in a place of quiet peace and great beauty.

On your way here, enjoy the drive on beautiful Highway One with it's scenic turnouts, beaches and state parks along the way . We suggest you stop in the lovely 2 small towns in either direction, that's Carmel or Cambria, to shop for groceries and gas before driving down or up the coast, as Big Sur has only a few places for these, and you will want to stock up before your trip.

Owned by 2 artists & meditators, the energy here is very inspiring for artists, writers, poets, meditators, couples or friends, as mentioned above. Enjoy the owners artworks of photography, paintings, & collages. This land was considered a sacred site by the ancient Esselen Indian tribe, and we ask that you honor the feeling of this land as a wonderful sanctuary retreat, not suited for parties, only quiet ADULTS !

The guesthouse rents for $350 per night. Weekly rate is $2350 for 2 ADULTS only! Please no smoking anywhere on this property or in the cottage and no parties or pets. TOT Tax & a non-refundable cleaning fee apply. Rates increase for Holidays and Monterey County Events. See more details in the rate section of this listing.

About Owners

We are 2 artists living and working in Big Sur for nearly 40 years. We teach workshops at nearby Esalen Institute in art, photography, dance, meditation and unfolding one's intuition. We both exhibit our art in local Big Sur & Carmel galleries, and are in museum and private collections worldwide. We love living and creating on this property!

Owners purchased this cottage in 1991

Why Owners chose Central Coast California

There is no other place like Big Sur in the world, with it's breathtaking beauty & it's natural environment. We have some of the worlds greatest & most inspiring teachers, thinkers, artists, writers, poets and illuminaries living here or who have lived here or passed through. The local people, like a tribe of creative individuals, really know how to live life as human 'beings', rather than human doings. The land calls to us in her quiet spiritual whispers, where One can slow down and appreciate the simplicity of just BEING. We feel blessed everyday and are so very grateful to own and live on this property here in God's most magnificent creation!

What makes this cottage unique

It's all been said above, just leave the world behind and find a sanctuary for the soul here in an environment of a beauty that is beyond words.

Loved this secluded romantic get away! Cynthia was an amazing host! Though I never met her I spoke with her several times. She was very helpful and kind! Hope we cross paths one day...❤️

A lovely, magical place.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Artist's House in June of this year and had a simply magical and wonderful time. Daniel and Cynthia were perfect hosts and provided everything one could think of to ensure our comfort. Along with a beautiful deck and a double lounger overlooking the ocean, there were ample supplies for a cozy fireplace. We found books on hiking trails and poetry and just enjoyed the ambiance along with the angels and Buddha's which decorate the property. While we have always felt the sacred nature that surrounds the area this property truly embodies it. We felt as though we'd come home the moment we stepped foot on it. Overall, we had a lovely respite from our hectic lives, and hope to be back "home" again very soon.

Heaven on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

There are truly no words to describe this property. I am always reluctant to book a home online without first seeing it in person. My daughter was getting married in Big Sur and I had never been to Northern California. Traveling from NJ was quite a trip, and I was hoping we would be happy at The Gallery House.

The ride to Big Sur was amazing enough, I couldn't see how the beauty could be even greater. Then we pulled into the driveway and walked on back. Being this close to the vast and beautiful ocean was a dream come true. There are truly no words to even describe the peaceful feeling that remains with me still.

As someone who lived in Hawaii, this home brought me the same inner peace that is indescribable. We spent little time in the house as we were only there for two nights and then the wedding, but every moment we were there was spent outside in one of the many nooks and crannies that were set up for viewing the sea. I finally saw hummingbirds, like a hundred of them, and my only disappointment was in not seeing a whale. Maybe next time! I sure tried!

I have shown my "backyard" photos to my friends and no one can believe the beauty. We are hoping to go back one day and stay at the very same property. I have no idea why anyone would chose a hotel over this home. We were only there for 2 nights, but on the first night we were able to sit outside and view the stars, the milky way, and we saw many "shooting stars." All while listening to the beat of the gentle waves.

Thank you Cynthia and Daniel, although we did not get to meet you, we loved the photography in the home which was clearly a part of you both and if we are ever fortunate to return, we will most definitely want to stay in your home again. I highly recommend this home to anyone looking in the Big Sur area. I am missing it as I type this. Truly heavenly.

Magical and special! My husband and I stayed for 3 nights and loved every second of this gorgeous house. Big Sur is breathtaking and staying at the Gallery house was the perfect way to spend our anniversary. The views are stunning and the house is charming and very comfortable. The nearby hiking trails are a must! We will be back!!!

WOW

  • 5 of 5

I almost don't want to leave a review, for fear of other people discovering this place and booking it next time I want to stay here.

This house is PERFECT. My girlfriend and I stayed here for our engagement weekend, and we could not have picked a better place.

It's probably the fifth or so rental property I've stayed in in Big Sur, plus Ventana and Treebones, and no doubt hands down this is the most perfect, romantic, private experience among them.

Unreal views, perfectly spacious and extremely comfortable, well kept and well maintained, with so many delightful details that made our trip that much better.

You're about 10 PCH miles from all the city's restaurants, and a mile from Esalen. But it feels like you're miles and miles from the rest of the world.

Just...perfect.

A Dream Come True.

  • 5 of 5

We fell in love with California, and more specifically Big Sur, when we visited two years ago. So our decision to return in this, the year of my husband Neil’s 60th birthday was an easy one to make. With that in mind, I began my search for a place we could enjoy this spectacular coastline in, a place that would live in our memory forever.

As soon as I found The Gallery House online I absolutely knew I had found that place. Communicating and paying for the rental transatlantically was challenging at times, but with determination and patience we got there, and I am so glad we did!

On the Saturday we were due to arrive, we picked up our rental car at San Francisco airport and headed out of the city for the coast stopping at the grocery store, suggested by Cynthia, in Carmel, for supplies. I was very excited but a little anxious too because I had booked this as a surprise for Neil and hoped that it was everything I had been led to believe it was. As the busyness of the towns fell away and the beauty of the Big Sur coastline welcomed us, we revelled in the drive south to our secret destination. The directions provided by Daniel and Cynthia were totally accurate and it wasn’t long before we were pulling into the drive of our home for the next week.

Any anxiety I had previously entertained dissolved into the warm coastal breeze as we walked down the path to the Gallery House and caught our first glimpse of the ocean. Absolutely breathtaking! The cabin is delightful, cosy and comfortable with magnificent views from every window. We went to bed gazing out at the myriad of stars in the night sky and watching the moon sink into the ocean, lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves below.

It took us a few days to really tune into the rhythm of The Gallery House and to realise the benefits of this unique place. We discovered great joy and peace in just sitting in the shade of the trees watching the wildlife. We drove up and down the coast, swam at Sand Dollar Beach, strolled around Carmel, went whale watching in Monterey Bay, hiked in Limekiln Park and ate in many of the restaurants in Big Sur but the most memorable part for me was watching Neil sitting outside the Gallery House, early in the morning, looking for whales. I’m so happy he saw them!

Our heartfelt thanks to Daniel and Cynthia for opening their home to us and allowing us to share this piece of heaven on earth for a brief moment in time. We had a truly amazing week and hope one day to return.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest, So happy you found your dreams coming true at The Gallery House! Your poetic description of our home touches our heart and soul and truly captures the essence of our place. We are so happy you pulled off your secret surprise for Neil. Big Sur is a very unique place in the world, a rare spot where one can get away from it all and unplug! So we very much appreciate your patience, (in this high tech, face passed world & given you were communicating from Europe), in how we slow down in Big Sur and handle bookings. As we do not use all of the features this website offers, like no on-line calendar dates & no credit cards, hence we do not email for requests & availability and do book our guests by a live phone interview. I know it is a slower process and we love it that way and feel that as we live on the property we want to make sure our guests are a good fit, and that they realize the remoteness of Big Sur. We knew you would be that kind of fit and are pleased to know you will join us & the whales again and come back to a slower pace in Big Sur, we look forward to having you! C & D
