You couldn't get closer to the beach in Looe unless you sit on it. This self-catering, one bedroom holiday home in Cornwall has everything you need for a romantic holiday or short break. Take your wallet, partner and shoes if you are planning on walking further than the glorious sandy beach. You will find everything else you need for a perfect vacation in the restored Cornish fisherman's cottage. The massive Georgian stone walls will keep you will be cool in summer, warm and cosy in winter. Forget the car and spend time walking the coastal paths to Polperro and beyond, visiting St George's Island or just browse the small independent shops. Watch the fishermen bringing their catch to market at high tide while enjoying your fish and chips. Eat in one of the many highly acclaimed restaurants or enjoy a pint and some shanty songs. Get to know how friendly the locals really are. At night time you may just catch the sound of the waves breaking on the beach at high tide, but nothing else.

South Cornwall: reckoned to be Britain's most beautiful and interesting coastline - is a land of steep wooded rocky chines which lead inland from the sea along stream and river valleys. Villages spill down these craggy inlets to the water where there is often to be found an old fishing harbour, always massively defended against the rolling Atlantic winter storms, and in today's more gentle political climate usually home to yachts and fishing boats, rather than the sea-reivers, smugglers and wreckers of yore.

The local history is rich: the Spanish Armada may have failed in its mission, but South Cornwall saw the only successful invasion since William the Conqueror when the Spaniards briefly invaded the county. The little-known Stannary Parliament at nearby Liskeard, which gave the tin-miners a large degree of self-rule, last sat in 1572, and the picturesque and haunting ruins of tin-mines still dot the uncompromisingly rugged but utterly beautiful landscape. The 'Cornish Alps' are testimony to the once-great china clay industry, and stories of the sea - lifeboat heroes, sea-going villains and naval battles - dominate this once-remote region. Surfing, crabbing, shark-fishing, lobster-fishing and scuba-diving are now the main activities in waters where revenue-men and smugglers and units of the Royal Navy and Napoleon's fleet once contended with cutlass and cannon.

What makes this apartment unique

I have known Cornwall all my life and I chose Looe because:

It feels like a real place with a fishing industry and work outside the tourist and second home business. Most of the homes in Looe are occupied all year round so the pubs are lively on a Friday night and the Fore Street can have a buzz about it on a Saturday morning.

It is possible to arrive in Looe by train.

It not very far inside Cornwall shaving an hour or more off the tail end a long drive from up-country.

I chose this particular property because:

I loved the idea of being so close to the beach.

It was so quiet at night.

I liked the privacy of being one row back from the sea front.

I loved the thick solid construction and the history of the building.

I could see it working well for short Winter breaks.

sweet little apartment

We arrived in Looe on Saturday night and found Sand martin quickly. The first thing I noticed was the lovely smell of freshly laundered sheets and the rest of the flat was spotless. After dropping our bags off we went in search of some saturday night fun in the local pubs and had a late bite to eat in Archie's. Early next day we awoke to the sound of herring gulls and began our week of walking the amazing coastline where we saw a great variety of birds in the changing tides, swimming in the little coves then eating and sampling Cornish beer in the local pubs Ye Olde Salutation and The Ship which does a fine pint of tribute. We also treated ourselves to a great meal in the Old Sail Loft. Sand Martin is just a few steps from the lovely, clean, sandy beach and we were able to go for a swim every morning (and often in the evening! ) Looe's a lively little fishing village and Sand Martin is the perfect place for a couple to stay.

Absolutely fantastic accommodation, perfect for a couple!

We had an absolutely lovely couple of days exploring Looe and the surrounding area. It only takes you maximum 5mins from the front door to the sea. There's great pubs and restaurants nearby and the flat was clean and welcoming. Great parking on the sea front! Well worth a visit, would love to visit again for longer! F & K

Fabulous location, clean, well equipped property

We had a wonderful weekend away at Sand Martin. The property is just right for a couple and its location is perfect being close to the beach, harbour and high street. We had everything we needed as the property is so well equipped. It was lovely and clean throughout and very cosy. Communication from the owner was great and a real bonus that a parking permit comes with the property, allowing us to park close by in a secure Carpark. Would throughly recommend Sand Martin to anyone visiting Looe.

Comfortable, clean and wonderful location

Spent three nights in the Sand Martin apartment for New Years eve. The apartment is exactly as shown in the photos, very comfortable bed and sofa, good shower and well equipped kitchen. Apartment was also extremely clean and nice and warm.

Communication with the owner Paul is very quick and he provided plenty of information about how to find the place / check-in and the free parking space that comes with the apartment is a real plus.

Whilst there are no views from the apartment the great location right by the beach in Looe makes up for it. It is walking distance to all the shops, restaurants and pubs but on a quiet street so not noisy. Would definitely recommend this place to stay for a couple.

Perfect break

This is a perfect little bolthole in the middle of bustling Looe. Very well equipped. Close to all amenities. We booked this apartment especially for the New Years Eve Firework spectacular which was the best yet!

Just a three minute walk from Sand Martin and you will find yourself on the South West Coast Path with miles of superb, breathtaking coastline. Whether you are looking for an afternoon stroll with spectacular views or a challenging hike, such as a 13 mile walk to beautiful Rame Head, you’ll find it all here.

The South West Coast Path continues to the west from Hannafore Point in West Looe (cross the bridge, turn left and continue towards the coast), taking in more stunning beauty spots such as Talland Bay, Polperro, Lantivet Bay and Lantic Bay. Walk to the ancient fishing village of Polruan, approximately 4 hours, stop for well earned fish & chips and take the passenger ferry across the estuary to picturesque Fowey town. You can always take the bus back to Looe from Polruan Quay.

There is a wealth of local attractions easily accessible from Sand Martin including: Talland Bay; the picturesque fishing port of Polperro; Woolly Monkey Sanctuary; the internationally renowned Eden Project and Tate Gallery St Ives. National Trust properties in the area include Lanhydrock, Cotehele, Mount Edgcumbe, Port Eliot and Antony House and can be easily reached from here, as well as beautifully rugged Bodmin Moor and a variety of beautiful, sandy beaches, bays and hidden coves skirting our stunning Cornish coastline. Other local attractions include sailing, fishing and diving, and spectacular coastal walks, especially that via Talland to Polperro, Lantic Bay, Lantivet Bay and Polruan.

Looe is a small, very quaint and pretty, coastal town and fishing port. Several fish dealers operate from the docks of East Looe. With its fleet of small fishing boats returning their catches to port daily, Looe has a reputation for producing excellent fresh fish. The town is also a centre for shark fishing, and is the home of the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain.

The town centres around a small harbour and along the steep-sided valley of the Looe Estuary which flows between East and West Looe to the sea beside a sandy beach. Off shore to the west, opposite the stonier Hannafore Beach, lies the idyllic St George's Island, otherwise known as Looe Island. Looe's main business today is tourism with a large number of pubs, restaurants, and shops.

East Looe centres on its broad sandy beach with the distinctive Banjo Pier. Stretching back from here is a grid of narrow streets forming the ancient centre of the town, packed with many small shops, restaurants and pubs, and the Old Guildhall, now a museum.

Along the estuary lies the quay, with several fish dealers. Towards the bridge lies the Victorian Guildhall, and just north of the bridge the railway station. This is the terminus of the Looe Valley branch line to Liskeard, a very popular and picturesque journey, itself an attraction (at Liskeard, the line connects with the main Plymouth to Penzance Great Western Main Line).

West Looe spreads west from the bridge on the Polperro Road and along the waterfront south of the bridge are restaurants, pubs and pretty cottages leading towards a cluster of shops and businesses and the Church of St Nicholas.

Further south along the coast road is Hannafore Point, marking the edge of Looe Harbour, with to the west the wide, stony Hannafore beach, facing across a narrow channel to Looe Island (officially called St. George's Island). Beyond lies a coastal path leading to the hamlets of Porthallow and Talland, and from there on to Polperro.

On New Year's Eve, Looe has a surprisingly large celebration; it is on the list of top 10 places in the UK to celebrate the New Year. The small fishing town, usually quiet in winter, due to the largely seasonal economy, is host to an influx of visitors. People flock the streets in their hundreds, wearing fancy dress, a tradition upheld by all ages.
