Studio Apartment, walking distance to U.S. Capitol and Union Station
About Leslie Merkle
As 30 year residents of Capitol Hill we've been privileged to have front row seats to all the major political, social, and cultural events of the last quarter century. Living in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol we've been able to observe inaugurations, Memorial Day concerts, 4th of July fireworks, Cherry Blossom Parades, and countless protests and demonstrations. Although we do not have a yard, we do have the National Mall, the Capitol grounds, and we are surrounded by lovely parks. We are within walking distance of the Smithsonian Museums, the National Portrait Gallery, the Folger Shakespeare Library, with easy access to public transportation at Union Station. We love our city and our neighborhood and are delighted when visitors choose to visit our beautiful capital.

Why Leslie Merkle chose Eastern Market
Our historic row house, built in 1890, is located within the Capitol Hill Historic District of our nation's capital. Its location next to Union Station, the Capitol and other monuments added to the beauty and uniqueness of our house. Historic preservation is very important to us as homeowners. This house was the last property in the block not renovated, and still in its original condition. Under the auspices of a National Park Service program to encourage historic renovations we restored the house, keeping the original floor plan, repointing the decorative brick facade and replacing the missing wrought iron features. Our block of homes was built by the owner of Smoot Lumber, the oldest continuously operated lumber company in the U.S., founded in Alexandria, Virginia in 1822. Construction on this block was completed in the early 1890's; this block of homes was intended for middle management employees of the railroad at the soon to be opened Union Station train station.
What makes this Apartment unique
Location and access are two of the best features of Capitol Quarters. One can walk from the apartment to the U.S. Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, or Union Station. The neighborhood is dotted with small restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, and eateries. Union Station, right next door, is the entry point to the metro system, Amtrak railways, and guided trolley tours around the city and to local sites.

An exceptional property in our nations capital.
We enjoy visiting large cities using VRBO. This property and owner deserve the outstanding ratings they receive. Everything in the listing is accurate. Some of the really attractive features of this rental for us are the location in a quiet residential neighborhood with great restaurants, cafes and groceries all within one block, and Union Station is only two blocks away. One other feature that is hard to find is this unit is “walk in”. There are no stairs to climb! We will definitely try to rent this address on our next visit.
The unit was exactly as described and looked just like the pictures. It was very clean and had everything we needed. The location is very close to Union Station, but the area was very quiet. This property is perfect for one person, or a couple. The property manager responded quickly. I would highly recommend this property.
Stayed here for 3 nights to attend D-Day 75th commemoration at the WWII Memorial and see local friends. The property is perfectly located for me, adjacent to Union Station and the Metro which, for a former DC resident made for easy transit around the city. Great neighborhood, quiet, smallish 1-bedroom apt. in row house, (just one VERY comfortable bed so best for single or couple), nice amenities, terrific coffee house with sidewalk seating literally feet away, numerous bars and restaurants within short walk to Pennsylvania Ave. , (where you can really get the vibe of the Capitol Hill crowd at happy hour!) and of course the shopping/eating venue at Union Station. Off-street parking a major plus!! Leslie responded within minutes to any questions I had, and damage deposit refunded within 48 hrs of departure. I will try to book on future visits to DC.
This ground-floor apartment is bigger than the photos make it appear. The kitchen, bath, and bedroom are adequately sized and separated by a hallway. The entry/exit is through the back (vs. the street), which opens into an odd brick-paved interior of the entire block, which has some offices in the middle. For the entire week, we never saw anyone coming or going from the offices or houses, which was odd, but we also felt completely safe, which was gratifying.
A coffee shop is on the same block, and good restaurants are within walking distance. The Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and Capitol are all nearby. We routinely walked to and from the mall, but that is a further walk. We opted not to rent a car, which was a good decision, given traffic and parking challenges in DC. Union Station is only 1 1/2 blocks away, and due to traffic, the Metro is often a better option than Uber or Lyft.
The property's owners gave clear instructions and provided numerous amenities (e.g. coffee, tea, energy bars, maps, travel guides, etc.) which we really appreciated. We much prefer staying in a residential neighborhood to staying in a hotel, and this was the rare property which allowed us to be near the sites, but not in the middle of the tourist swarm. We would definitely recommend it.
Had a great week. The place was fairly close to the Metro, very clean, coffee shop 100 feet away, plenty of towels, coffee and treats were a very nice touch. It was small, which was advertised and we wished the bed was bigger. But all in all, a lovely place. Lots of homie touches.
Location, Location, Location
Clean and well stocked. Was able to park walk for the length of our stay. Restaurants around corner were excellent. Overall great experience.
