The centre of Portugal has some of the country’s finest beaches, most of which are well known for surfing. Central Portugal is well known for its major monuments, wonderful scenery and it remains, as yet, largely undiscovered. The Romans described the centre of Portugal as the Garden of Eden. Much of Central Portugal is covered with lush, green and beautiful mountain scenery and has a temperate climate. The blue flag beach Praia do Osso da Baleia with free parking is 1 hour’s drive.
Casa de Sandoeira - Things to Do:
Our self catering villa is situated near Alvaiázere in Central Portugal, close to unspoiled countryside, river beaches that are suitable for swimming and historic world heritage sites. It is only 20 minutes from the beautiful city Tomar and within 40 minutes of Portugal’s stunning third largest city - the University city of Coimbra. Lisbon and Porto are just a train ride away or 1.5 hours by car. Horse riding, hiking, kayaking, river trips and spa days are all available locally and can be arranged for you. There is plenty to do and see and something for everyone!
The locale around Sandoeira is unspoiled, natural and often stunning. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, gorges, forests, picturesque villages, miles of sandy beaches, this area has it all.
The nearest large town is Alvaiázere which has everything a small town should have: restaurants, cinema, pharmacy, doctors, a football team, shops and bars. It has a market once a week, where you can buy anything from furniture to rabbits or a pair of jeans!
Tomar is dominated by the Convento de Cristo which sits high above the city and is crossed by the Nabão River. Its chequered history tells stories of wealth and trading, religion and atrocities, peace and cultivation and it was especially important in the 15th century when it was a centre for Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator. The Convent is an incredible place to visit and is open every day except various Bank Holidays. It really is a 'must do' place to visit and you will not forget its stunning beauty if you go.
The Romans, Moors and Portugal’s own Gualdim Pais have all set their mark on this beautiful city. Its beautiful churches, old town and Convent are visited by many tourists each year, showing visitors its mysterious, wonderful and often colourful past.
Portugal’s river beaches are little gems of tranquility tucked into gorges, along rivers or created in picturesque towns and villages. Each one is unique in its setting and offering, but all bring you into proximity with nature.
The clear river waters in this part of Portugal are often warmer than the sea and with no hidden undercurrents, make river beaches perfect for beautiful summer days. The clearly defined swimming areas offer grass or sand for relaxing; sunbathing or playing and ancient trees provide dappled shade in the heat of the day.
Many river beaches have slides, rope swings, jumping platforms and ladders for your enjoyment and most have cafés and picnic areas. In the height of the summer many have a lifeguard on duty and most have a first aid point.
One recommended is Fragas de São Simão. A twisty drive through the forest, takes you past a wonderful view point and brings you down to where the River Alge has been dammed to help provide several pools of varying depth. It is a beautiful natural setting, with dappled shade and swimming in the crystal clear water. There is a communal BBQ area, toilets and a café open in the summer.
