Self catering villa rental with pool ideal for both Granada and Sierra Nevada

Cortijo la Mata, owned and run by Johnny & Angie Thirkell and managed by Laura , is a traditional Andalusian farmhouse constructed in the year 1911 converted into a holiday villa with breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada mountains, gated swimming pool, digital TV .

For those who are looking for a complete escape to the Andalusian countryside yet want to take advantage of all that the city of Granada has to offer plus take in the ski slopes of Spain's highest mountain range the location is perfect. Situated in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the villa is located just outside the old village of Monachil in an area of outstanding natural beauty surrounded by olive, almond and cherry trees.

Total land area of 1,500m2 which includes the villa (275m2 distributed over three floors), beautiful mature gardens of over 100m2, several patios and terraces totalling around 300m2, parking area of 100m2 (for 4 cars) and private mountainside of 800m2. The large pool is fully enclosed and there are 9 sun loungers to relax on while the kids splash in their own.

Ideal for a large family (with grandparents) or two families taking a holiday together in 6 bedrooms. Set amongst mature gardens with beautiful shrubs and trees the barbecue area with fabulous views of the countryside is big enough for family celebrations & gatherings. There are quiet corners for relaxation, so everyone can relax and enjoy their well earned family holiday.

The villa is ideally located within a couple of minute walk of the local shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, banks, a post office, pharmacy, DIY shop, tobacco shop, bike rental and bus stop. Cortijo la Mata is registered with the Andalusian Tourist Board VTAR/GR/00194.

- Maximum capacity is 14 guests.

- A fully returnable breakage deposit of 300€ is payable together with the balance. This is returned provided the house is found to be clean and in order on departure day.

- No pets permitted.

- All bedlinen and towels are supplied and included in the price at no additional cost. For longer stays bedlinen and towels are changed on request. Please note that towels for the pool are NOT supplied.

- Cleaning materials and associated equipment are provided in the villa for your use during your stay.

- Change over day during summer months is Saturday. We can be flexible at other times so please ask.

- Late availability discounts - unlet dates within 7 days are discounted by 15%

- Long stay discount - 5% discount will be applied to full weeks after the first week

About Laura Castro

My name is Johnny Thirkell and together with my wife Angie we own Cortijo la Mata farmhouse in Granada. We live in the UK but manage the villa together with our fantastic local housekeeper Laura, who is always available to assist guests.

Why Laura Castro chose Monachil

We were looking for somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of the coast but with easy access to the beach if we fancy a day there. Somewhere where we could relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery that Andalusia has to offer along with the cultural and historical delights of Granada. Ooh, and there's skiing 20 minutes away too!

What makes this villa unique

This is a unique property. Travellers will be hard pushed to find such a traditional yet updated villa so close to Granada city whilst surrounded by the Andalusian countryside.

Thank you Sari and Scott for a warm welcome to Cortijolamata. The cottages are home from home. We have had a wonderful 5 days, enjoyed visits to Alhambra Palace, city tour of Granada on the open-top bus, sun and sea at Salobreña and relaxing by the pool taking in the stunning views.

Quirky, idiosyncratic and in the most beautiful spot

I rented the house to entertain friends and family coming to Spain for my daughter's wedding. People were coming and going over the month and the house became like home. Everyone loved it and it coped beautifully. Because it is split into three sections it is quirky, I am not sure that there is enough outside space for three different groups, especially around the pool, but for us it was perfect.

Laura was wonderful, nothing was too much trouble and she dealt with any problem quickly and very calmly. She has a lovely energy that added to the pleasure of the stay.

The house is right on one of the routes of the Los Cahorros gorge walk in the Sierra Nevada and it is breathtaking. To be able to do this with the dogs on a daily basis was a joy, as were the gorgeous views of the mountains from the house.

Not everything is perfect, it's an old and quirky house with the problems associated with such things. An odd electrical system that sometimes caused concern, a typical rural plumbing system that I am used to but could be challenging for those who are not used to the joys of country living, and the furniture around the pool needs overhauling.

There is considerable country wildlife around and this did include a few visits by a local deer curious about the activity around the pool. Magical!

The village of Monachil is wonderful, great cafes, restaurants (La Cantina del Diego being favourite), a friendly lively community and a regular bus service into Granada city. For walkers this place is paradise.

Yes I would go back there if I needed somewhere of that size again, and my daughter and friends (who live in Granada city) couldn't stay away at the weekends and would love me to live there to provide them with a country retreat! I wish!

Perfect family holiday base

As a family of 14 with ages ranging from 3 years to 58 years old pleasing us all is not easy, however our stay in Monachil was brilliant. The house is well sighted for walking in the hills or to the village, the village has plenty of bars, restaurants and supermarkets if you don't want to drive further afield. Clearly the house could be split into three separate units, but for us it afforded plenty of bedrooms and seating areas to be together or quiete when needed. Access to the house is via a single track road and gravel trail but don't be put off by this, we had no issues during the two weeks traveling on this. The house is old and interesting, the pool although small was great fun and used everyday by the whole family. The bedrooms are not luxurious but we're comfortable, if you follow the guidelines on opening and closing the windows and shutters the temperature at night is easily controlled. There was plenty of hot water although one of the showers is out of action we had no issues meeting our needs in the other two. The house is old and would benefit from from some TLC in the form of maintenance, equipment is varied and don't expect to find a set of anything, having said this we managed. It would benefit from some new glassware though, drinking wine from a tumbler is not perfect. In summary we had a great holiday, the house served our needs and did not disappoint, the area has loads to do, we had cars and didn't have any trouble entertaining our age range. We would most certainly consider staying again.

Beware: Change of Ownership - House is a little run-down, new owner lacks integrity

We stayed here for 4 nights in June 2017. First the good: the house is in a peaceful setting with a nice view. The pool is as advertised, although it is in the shade a lot and thus the water was very cold. The caretaker, Laura, is absolutely wonderful and she went out of her way to help us during our stay. But despite these positives I cannot recommend this property. First, the house is quite rundown and in need of repairs and upgrades, especially the main kitchen and the upstairs bath. In the main kitchen, the ancient oven did not work, many dishes in the cabinets were dirty, and as a result there were lots of ants. In general, it is old and needs work. The upstairs bath is outside in a metal shed that also houses the old water heater, and is full of ants and other bugs. The shower handle fell off the first time I touched it, as did the shower door. This "bathroom" is very run down. The rest of the house isn't as bad, but except for the apartment, it has a neglected feel. Also, it is important to note that the house is much more remote than advertised. It is not a "few minutes" walk to restaurants, shops, and the bus stop in the village of Monachil - it is 25-30 minutes walking. Also, it is 25-30 minutes to drive to the Alhambra (not 10!). If you don't have a car, don't stay here. But the main reason I am unhappy has to do with the new owner (the house changed hands recently, so beware of prior reviews). The house was advertised as having wifi - the headline for the listing was "Stunning Villa With Pool and Wifi." Access to wifi was important to us because we had to work during our stay. Because this caused a great inconvenience and we had to rack up substantial data roaming charges using my phone hotspot , I asked Laura for the owner's number so I could ask for a discount. She said she had the authority to handle it and agreed to $400 refund. She was understanding and apologetic. But after our stay we did not get the refund. I emailed the owner 4 times about it through VRBO. He ignored my first 3 emails, and he responded only when I said I would write a review about his reneging/ignoring me. In his response, he was rude, saying I should have "disconnected" instead of worrying about wifi and that he would not honor the promised discount. He also removed references to wifi on the listing, so I guess he has decided not to fix it. In sum: Laura is great, the home is so-so, but the owner lacks integrity and you should beware dealing with him.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry for the negative comment you are making about our villa. The wifi service offered in this holiday home is for leisure and not for work, if you wanted to make use of your own internet for personal matters you can not ask us to pay those expenses. Apart is very sad to write that in the house there are ants and it is all in poor condition and dirty. The house is true that has more than 100 years old but has two bathrooms in perfect condition, new mattresses and we always use laundry service for our sheets and towels so that they are disinfected I am in charge of cleaning and reservations, my name is Laura, the person you are talking about so well and the owner has nothing to do with the misunderstanding and is an excellent person. I am sorry that after having taken it in my car to the supermarket and to the Alhambra you have been waiting for us to refund your holiday, Cortijo La Mata is on the outskirts of the village of Monachil in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park this is something we clarify in the presentation of the house and of course you have to have car to get here and get moving, I really regret that I did not pay attention when I made the reservation, I really regret this situation. An amazing beautiful villa, stunning views and close to some fabulous walking.

We were a party of 12 adults, there was enough room in the villa to accommodate us all comfortably. There was the lovely swimming pool, a local town with buses to Granada every hour and a gorge nearby for those who liked walking. All in all a fabulous holiday was had by all.

the mountains

10 of us - 3 families - stayed at Cortijo la Mata. It was perfect. Lots of space inside and outside, walking distance to great hiking (Las Cohorres, the mountains), short driving distance to Granada and only 45 minutes to the Mediterranean beaches. As another reviewer said, getting to the house is up a long winding narrow dirt road - get there the first time during the day! Monachil is a cute town with everything you need. At the house it as if you are in the jungle and the desert at the same time ... tons of birds and green, and at the same time, it's very dry. The pool is great for a nice dip when it gets hot. We were made to feel very much at home. Definitely have Jose come and cook for you - the most delicious paella and bbq for us. We had a great time!
