About Tom Jackson

This farm has been in my family since Thomas Jefferson was president; I inherited in about 1980. We have transitioned from tobacco, cotton and commodity crops (which I rent out to a neighbor), to stainable farming of alliums and fresh herbs.

Tom Jackson purchased this cottage in 1812

Why Tom Jackson chose Cape Fear

Why stay here ? Because we guarantee no TV, no telephone, no newspaper, no radio, and no internet connection, but we do provide a house so private that the shower is on the screened porch overlooking the pond (if you don't want to soak in the large claw foot tub in the bathroom), a fireplace with cured hardwood supplied, and two miles of private woodland trails, a small library,as well as a private fishing pond with boat. Where else can you find this ?

What makes this cottage unique

Privacy, peace, quiet.

Wonderful place to get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Tom and Jan are very welcoming and Tom took time to tell us about the farm. While it was quite hot outside, the house was cool and comfortable. We loved the outdoor shower and the indoor bathtub. Cooking on the grill worked out fine (planned menus ahead of time and we took everything with us that we needed, so no shopping trips were needed.) The noises of nature surrounded us as we sat on the screened porch in the cooler evening / early morning hours. It is a great place to disconnect from the stress of work / life and to reconnect with nature and each other. We plan on returning!

Wonderful secluded getaway! *Follow GPS instructions carefully*

Gorgeous cabin. The place was immaculately clean. The AC worked great inside the cabin, and the screened porch was key to enjoying the outdoors and view of the pond, without the bugs. The antique soaking tub is amazing and we loved the bath salts and fresh rosemary Tom told us to add from just outside the front door. We appreciated his stock of teas, coffee, sugar, etc. This was the perfect romantic getaway. Thanks Tom! Note: Follow the GPS instructions carefully!! The mailing address does not register correctly on Google maps and will take you to a place in Godwin which is nowhere near the cabin (like 15 miles away). Use the coordinates for accuracy, or enter "Spivey's Corner" on your map and then follow Tom's written instructions for the last few miles from there.

Very nice rustic cabin unfortunately there were several issues with our stay

Very nice rustic cabin unfortunately there were several issues with our stay We feel like The description online was misleading there is mobile homes on one side of the cabin the deck on the back is private but the opposite Side is where the mobile homes were so that wasn’t horrible but looking on line we assumed it was very secluded the pond looking online was quite clean but it had extremely thick algae all over the pond The algae was so thick it was hard to paddle the boat around also as I said the Cabin was nice looking but there was issues with ants and also early in the morning just as the sun would come up we was Woke up by squirrels that was chewing holes into the cabin and the screened in porch also the roof is leaking luckily it’s not anywhere that really mattered to us it was dripping just in front of the fireplace and in the corner of the living room area it has beautiful wood ceilings and walls except for the ceiling in the kitchen area had mold growing on it and one wall in the living room But it was a beautiful farm the hosts seem very kind. For me and my wife we did have a good time we would have liked to been able to fish better but is far is just going out sitting on the back deck and enjoying coffee and each other that was nice

Owner's Response: I much regret the algae on the pond, caused temporarily by a lack of sufficient rainfall and very hot weather recently. It will go away in time, and it will return, and then it will go away again. The pond is over 100 years old and contains nutrients brought in by the stream that feeds it. Good rains flush algae growth out and into the swamp below. I could kill it with an aquatic herbicide, but it would simply sink, rot, and return the nutrients for the next crop of algae. We prefer the algae to the poison, but it does cause fishing problems, to my dismay. I, too, regret the leak. I had already contracted for repairs before your arrival, but the roof man was delayed. Meanwhile, we must endure it. The "mold" you saw on the ceiling and walls is just old green paint stain that remained after the boards were sandblasted. We tried to salvage all the antique boards when we renovated the house. The entire kitchen ceiling and part of a wall by the sofa displays these boards. There are more in the attic in storage in case we should need them later for a repair. No mold causes that green you saw. We have done all we can to hide with vegetation that accursed trailer court which has destroyed the beautiful farm that was on the site. If you have any suggestions about anything more we can do to further conceal it, we would appreciate your input. That abomination sprang up after we opened our guest house. We have tried to arrange everything so the view is toward the pond. Our own farm is free of such distractions. About the animals I have no apology. This is a farm with open fields, woods, swamp, and ponds, and the fact that we have a lot of wildlife speaks to the health of our organically managed land, all of which is in a conservation easement so it can never be developed. The entire 10 acres with the cabin is a wildlife preserve, so yes you will have squirrels, and birds, and raccoons, and even an occasional snake around the house and sometimes on the porch. We do not view this as detrimental to the site, but something of an attraction for those who live in the city and seldom see wild animals. We have also documented over 100 species of birds on the farm. I hope you had a chance to walk some of the trails which give more views of the natural world here. We make no pretense to be a motel or a state park, just a working farm with a comfortable old farmhouse for escape from the "real" world. We have tried to describe its normal state.

A great relaxing stay

Loved our time at the cabin (even if it was short). The cabin is just as advertised. We enjoyed drinking coffee and watching the geese off the back porch. Lovely place we will be back.

Tom had everything I needed for a nice weekend away. I loved sitting on the porch and watching the wildlife. The bed was comfortable and the couch was so comfy I didn’t want to get up! Thank you for a great time!
