About the property

Luxury Western-Style Rancher's Home

This listing is for the spacious 1912 Rancher's House with its 1950s High-Style Western interior, sunny patio, and fine amenities. The house accommodates 8-11 with 3 bedrooms, 2 sleeping porches, 2 baths, new gourmet kitchen, large porches, fountain patio, fireplace, and more. Renovated in 1950 by the owners' grandparents under direction of renowned ranch interior designer W. R. Dallas of San Antonio, the Rancher's House is much the same today, save for minor refurbishing and recent upgrades to the baths and gourmet kitchen. For guests, the house may be either a roomy, rambling accommodation for one family or a small group of friends, or the adjacent patio apartments may be added to provide comfortable accommodations for up to 10 more. (See these additional listings on this website: Hawk's Nest, Fountain Patio, and Rancher's House/Patio Combination.)

Guests find that the Rancher's House, with its sprawling spaces and oversized living areas, is exactly right for enjoying the opportunity to gather. The long front porch easily accommodates a group at one end playing cards at the small table, others in the middle space visiting, and a jigsaw puzzle or board game in progress at the large table beyond – and more. In the spacious living room, there are several conversation areas, or some guests might enjoy the big screen TV for broadcast cable programming or movies from our library. Off the kitchen, the side porch is perfect for breakfast at the banquette or for managing drinks service for the party. The dining room serves up to 12. With other tables and a bar up to 16 more may share a meal.

Outdoors, the fountain patio is a patch of fresh-air privacy for the Rancher's House, but the house is only steps away from the beautiful pool, a replica of its original 1929 predecessor, and well-groomed lawns and plantings within the courtyard's walled perimeter. Shady seating and a 6-person spa promise even more relaxation.

Beyond the courtyard, expansive lawns beckon guests to run and play or soak up sun. There's room for badminton, croquet, or bocce – or just enjoying the air and light, so special in New Mexico. Guests are welcome to explore ranch headquarters, with its barns and corrals, and then to hike, bicycle, or drive out in any direction on NAN Ranch roads. There is plenty to see and enjoy.

• Rental guests may also park one RV or camping trailer nearby, though we do not offer hookups.

• For very large groups, combinations of rentals, and events, a consultation with the ranch owners is recommended.

About Betty Lang

The Y-Bar NAN Ranch's owners are the Burford and Lang families, descendants of Bill and Clara Hinton, who operated the ranch from 1949 until their passing in the 1980s. Though we were raised away from the ranch and have worked "city" jobs, we call the ranch home, and want to share its wonders with our guests.

Family members are on hand to welcome and show you you around, to answer your questions, and to make sure you have what you need in this wonderful house.

Betty Lang purchased this estate in 1949

Why Betty Lang chose Faywood

No place rivals the Mimbres River Valley for light, atmosphere, a sense of peace, a thrill of adventure, a chance to challenge and discover oneself. In the special verdant spot where the NAN's homes and facilities lie, there is a comforting awareness of the blending of prehistory and history, of communities and individuals accustomed to both hard work and reliance on nature's abundance. The NAN Ranch's quiet, remote beauty is regenerative.

What makes this estate unique

Whether you want quiet and solitude, a leisurely visit with nature, or rigorous hiking, trail running, or bicycling, your time at the Y-Bar NAN Ranch will be fulfilling. We can confidently say that there is no comparable property, anywhere, that is so open to guests' personal visions for a fulfilling holiday from the outside world. Public parks and preserves are full of other adventurers, but the NAN is yours to share with only a handful of others, and there's so much space and variety you need never see another guest unless you wish to. Just as important to most of our guests is that this historical working ranch is neither resort nor "dude ranch": we don't "entertain" you, schedule you, or crowd you. You design your experience.

Though you're in one version of heaven just staying at the NAN Ranch, you're also close enough to make day trips to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, Gila National Forest, City of Rocks State Park, Silver City for fine dining and fine art shopping, La Esperanza Vineyard just up the road for wine and sunsets, and other interesting and sometimes quirky corners of our neighborhood.

The Y-Bar NAN Ranch offers a variety of rentals for a almost any kind and size of group. Here, we have priced The Rancher's House only. See our other rental listings or for information on other options.

NAN Ranch is about 40 miles from Silver City, on the green Mimbres River Valley in Grant County, New Mexico. Set at almost exactly a mile high, the headquarters provides several comfortable levels of accommodation, where our visitors can simply enjoy peace, or from which guests can range beyond. The ranch is some 67,000 acres of river, foothill, juniper to pinon forest, canyons, desert, rugged mountain, and is transversed by hundreds of miles of roads. Guests are welcome to walk, hike, climb, bicycle, tour on-road in their own vehicles, picnic, explore and enjoy our cattle ranges and wildlife paradise.

Beyond the ranch, many travelers enjoy Silver City with its high-quality art community; the Gila National Forest and Gila Wilderness whose border is less than an hour away; Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument about 2 hours away; the City of Rocks State Park just down our road; and many other fascinating places like ghost towns, mining camps, forest trails, and more.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch... guests' luxury home, rustic cabin, or group lodge provides comfortable lodging and indoor/outdoor gathering, convenient kitchen and bath facilities amid beautiful landscaped grounds, lawns for sports or just lounging, a large pool and garden compound, and an inexhaustible supply of serenity, peace, and quiet.

The NAN Ranch is a historic property, the showplace of Mimbres Valley for over 100 years, with extensive corrals, barns, silos, workshops, acequias (irrigation ditches), pecan, fruit and evergreen trees all dating from its days as a self-contained community. The NAN is also the site of the NAN Ranch Ruin, the site of a large prehistoric Mimbreno settlement from which was excavated the largest full collection of Mimbreno painted pottery and other artifacts, now housed in the Western New Mexico University Museum in Silver City.

The NAN and the Mimbres Valley and its canyons and arroyos are truly unique in light, atmosphere, beauty, and the mysteries of life in nature.
