About Abel Chirino

My wife and I visited the Smokies in 2005 and fell in love with Gatlinburg and the surrounding areas. We purchased a small condo on ski mountain in 2006, but decided that what we really wanted was a log cabin. We searched and found Wilderness Escape in 2010. It was a foreclosure and therefore we had the opportunity of fixing it up from scratch. We took special care in picking every single item of décor found in our cabin.

Abel Chirino purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Abel Chirino chose Tennessee

We fell in love with the views and the spaciousness that the master bedroom provides. There are nine picture windows and a spectacular sunset awaits from the deck off the master bedroom.

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin is unique in that it sits all by itself on top of a knoll. There is a cabin visible below, but no neighbors to the left or to the right. This cabin is semi-secluded and very cozy. The amazing sunset views is also a major plus of Wilderness Escape.

Wonderful getaway

Had a nice, relaxing stay in the smokies. The cabin was well maintained and was all we had hoped it to be.

Beautiful cabin in quiet mountain area

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Wilderness Escape. The master bedroom was very spacious and we loved the view from the many windows in that room and from the back deck off the master bedroom. The bear and deer decor was tastefully done and we loved the knotty pine walls and rustic wood furniture. My two girls used the 2nd bedroom and my son used the rollaway bed which we set up in the game room so he could have his own area instead of just using the pull out sofa. There was a set of queen sized sheets for the sleeper sofa, but no twin sheets for the the rollaway bed, though. We just used the larger fitted sheet and tucked the extra sheet underneath. A set of twin size sheets for this bed would be nice. The kitchen had all the basic necessities. We had one minor issue mid week that was handled very promptly by the owner after we texted her. The driveway is steep, but was manageable in our minivan. We even saw a bear outside the cabin one day. It walked right past where our van was parked and then down the driveway, without bothering anything. I would highly recommend this cabin and we would stay here again in the future.

Spectacularly secluded sanctuary- not to be missed.

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in several locations and with several owners, but this cabin is atop our list and the mountain. In an attempt to make it easier the Review will be in list form.

Location- at first it was hard to find (do not use gps, use the written directions) but after the initial confusion it was easy to find without any help. The cabin is located high up on the mountain in a secluded, off the road location. Unlike many of the other cabins we passed this cabin offers isolation. It is surrounded by trees and offers great views from the top deck and privacy in the hot tub. Great sunset views and with binoculars you can watch the fireworks from Dollywood.

Cabin- the main bedroom is amazing. A huge bed, marvelous jacuzzi tub, and private balcony for morning coffee and sunset drinks. We had our teen daughter with us and felt like it offered much needed personal space for all of us. The second bedroom is perfect for a teen, a kid, or another couple. The living area is great for watching tv, playing games, or simply relaxing. Many games of pool were played in the man cave and many hours were spent in the hot tub. The kitchen had almost everything you could need, although I used the grill more than anything else. I suggest hitting up Publix before heading up the mountain and stock up so you need not leave this amazing cabin.

Owners- this may have been the icing on the cake. We had a minuscule issue after we arrived and were able to contact them via text, call, and email with very fast response times. They not only remedied the situation, but pleasantly surprised us with how great they handled it- simply put, they are spectacular.

COST- there my be no other cabin that offers everything this one does at a price that is as reasonable. I've stayed in hotels with one bed for the same price.

One complaint- WE HAD TO LEAVE😉 Going back to real life was the only bad thing about staying here.

A few things (after reading other reviews)

- the pool table lean is much better as a leg was knocked in (fixed it)

- the roads are not bad, I drive a dodge magnum and had no trouble

- views are great, yes the trees grow, but it is still amazing

- essentials are provided, but extras aren't. Spices, foil, and other things you use are your choices and not the owners responsibility. They could supply these, but then would have to add this to the cost of the stay.

Cute Cabin high up in the woods!!

  • 4 of 5

The cabin itself is great, there is a tv in almost every room for those rainy times, beds are comfortable and the pool table and hot tub were perfect! My only complaints are, there were no kitchen essentials besides dishes and pots and pans. Other homes that we have rented have had the basics like spices, oil, foil, etc.... since we flew in from AZ these were items that we had to go out and purchase just to be able to cook a basic meal. Also the house only came with enough toilet paper to last 1/2 day, that was another item we had to go purchase. There was not enough blankets and pillows either. Being up in the woods these are some basic essentials that a cabin should have since it is quite the drive into town. Other than that, we did like the cabin a lot.

Overall a nice cabin and nice owners

  • 4 of 5

As others have mentioned, the roads are winding and steep. If you are not used to those type of roads, you should definitely take something like a truck or SUV.

The cabin was as clean as expected in the mountains and they had all the kitchen necessities available for cooking and serving. I bought coffee to make while up there, but it was not working unfortunately. I contacted the owner and they were willing to send someone up with a coffee pot to swap them out which was nice and responsive!

The hot tub worked great and the cabin was a nice secluded feel to it which makes it great for a get away. The only issue were some maintenance problems that I sent to the owner before checking out so they can look into them before the next guests arrive. I know the owners don't always get to go up to the cabins that often and the cleaners aren't going to report the issues. They did say they would send maintenance up to look into the issues.

A couple of fair warnings:

1. The pool table leans, so if you are a serious pool player, it won't be a great play.

2. There are definitely bears in the area. On our 2nd or 3rd morning there, probably around 4-5 in the morning I heard a noise I thought may have been our friends downstairs. Turns out, it was a bear getting into the trash enclosure. Be aware of your surroundings and stay safe! (I was bummed I didn't go down to check it out and see it)

3. There are hornets in the woods in the Summer. They have up traps, but you can still see them flying around.

4. And finally, the view from the second deck was not as great as it looks in these pictures. As is the way with nature, things grow and start to block your view. The tress were much larger so it removed most of the mountain views which was disappointing.

Overall a great cabin and friendly owners. As long as none of the warning bother you, I would 100% recommend this cabin. Also, the owner will send you Directions, FOLLOW THEM. Don't trust navigation as not all of the roads are on the maps yet.

Very secluded getaway!

  • 5 of 5

First off, the cabin was very nice. Met everyone's expectations and some. The drive up the mountain is typical but not as bad as some people pointed out. I had a FWD 4-cylinder and got up it just fine. The cabin was nicely decorated and gave a very homey feeling. We went to the grocery store our first day there and were able to do most of our eating at the cabin. The grill got some work in for us. The pool table was also a very nice touch and we played many games on it. The hot tub was nice but a bit small for people our size, I'm 6'5 300lbs and my friend is 6'1 300lbs...a little tight haha but we made the best of it all. I would definitely recommend coming here and might have to schedule another trip in the future. The owners were very helpful as well. Thanks!
