Peaceful Country Comfort W Panoramic Views of Big Creek Valley

Bedrooms 2
Space 900 sq. ft.
Property type apartment

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Relax in the comfort of a full-size 2 bedroom, 2 bath luxury 2nd floor apartment with separate entrance for your convenience and privacy. Enjoy the quiet country life with panoramic views of Big Creek Valley from the bay window in your living room, or sip a favorite beverage on the spacious balcony adjoining the King room. Feel free to enjoy our large lawn, take a walk through our woods or enjoy an evening fire in the fire pit. (Large deck attached to main house is available to guests on request.)

Our home is situated on the side of a small hill overlooking an active dairy farming area with farmers fields and pastures giving way to rolling wooded hills in the distance. Enjoy a bicycle or motorcycle ride or quiet drive along (paved) country roads, or relax in the yard or on your balcony with a good book and a glass of wine.

Wintertime sports activities are nearby with cross country and downhill skiing, tubing and snowboarding at Fort McCoy, cross country at the golf course in Sparta, and downhill at Mount La Crosse. Snowmobile trails abound! You and the kids can enjoy sledding on the mild slope of the hill right behind your apartment, build snowmen in the yard, etc. Try your hand at ice-fishing on Perch Lake or Lake Neshonoc or skating at the Sparta Hockey Rink or one of the outdoor rinks at Memorial Park in Sparta... or just snuggle in and stay warm by the electric fireplace in the apartment.

The apartment is attached to our home but has a separate entrance for your convenience. Sound buffers between our living spaces mean we can't hear you and you can't hear us.

A few years ago a storm blew over an enormous elm tree I climbed as a kid. It landed on the corner of an early 1900's granary. The owner chose not to repair it and allowed us to take it down for the salvaged lumber. You'll find that reclaimed lumber throughout the apartment. Wooden floors were reworked from the granary flooring. Wainscot, trim and wood ceilings were made from the siding. Shelves and benches that adorn the apartment were made from refashioned roofing boards. Table, work station and vanity tops were made from wall studs and beams. Nail holes, knots and blemishes remain visible in the wood giving the finished pieces a unique and beautiful character.

Keywords: Luxury Suite, large yard, woods, reclaimed wood floors, close to Elroy-Sparta and La Crosse River bike trails. Day trips to Bluffs, Amish Country.

About Larry & LuAnn Hutson

Lu and I know that where we stay when we travel can dramatically affect how much we enjoy our entire vacation. We've learned that having a comfortable, relaxing (and sometimes romantic) place to call our 'home on the road' is as important as choosing what we'll do with our time. We've designed this space with YOUR comfort and relaxation in mind.

Lu and I enjoy 'getting back to basics'. Lu plants a garden and does home canning and freezing. We make our own maple syrup, occasionally raise a few farm animals, etc. We're 'growing green' in other ways too, with geothermal to provide heat and air conditioning and some of our hot water as a by-product. We've made our home and your apartment as energy efficient as we can, and Larry LOVES working with reclaimed wood for a variety of projects.

More recently, we've started a business called 'Used Anew'. We deconstruct unwanted buildings in the area (barns, houses, garages, etc.) and make the reclaimed lumber and other materials available for repurposing.

Larry & LuAnn Hutson purchased this apartment in 2007

Why Larry & LuAnn Hutson chose Southern Wisconsin

We love the country! It's so peaceful and quiet here in the Big Creek Valley. The views of active farms and majestic wooded hills are spectacular any time of year. We've come home to Wisconsin after more than a decade away. Here on the hillside, overlooking the farm where I grew up, it feels a little like we're on vacation every day! We decided to share this experience with you, and so we've made this luxurious full-size apartment for you to use, for a night, for a week, or longer if you wish.

What makes this apartment unique

When was the last time you had absolutely nothing you were obligated to do? Sometimes the best vacation consists of finding a comfortable, inspiring place to stay and throwing out the schedule of activities. If you feel like going out, there's plenty to do - but if 'doing' is less important than re-energizing, staying in just might be the best option! Either way, we've created a space for you that can function as 'home-base' for a busy schedule, or comfortable and relaxing enough you may not want to leave.

During the growing and harvesting seasons we enjoy watching the farming activities all around us as our neighbors work the fields and harvest their crops. We frequently spot American Bald Eagles and other wildlife from our perch on the hill.

On cloudless nights, you'll enjoy the lack of light pollution. The only lights you'll see for miles will be a few neighbors' yard lights and an occasional passing vehicle on the road below. You may not have realized just how many stars are visible in the night sky!

Lovely, well built and well stocked apartment. Very comfortable and private.

Larry and LuAnn have created a very nice space. They've thought of everything anyone could need to cook, relax, and enjoy. I visited with two friends and we enjoyed the views; were able to prepare our meals using the well stocked kitchen; enjoyed visiting the antique shop - where to our surprise - one of us found a child's rocker she had been hunting for; we enjoyed a leisurely walk to the historic Methodist church down the road and the accompanying cemetery (interesting to guess stories, see dates, see military markers etc.,) and just visit and relax. Many thanks! Very easy to reserve, find and enjoy.

Owner's Response: We're so glad you and your friends enjoyed your getaway to the country. And we're super pleased your friend was able to find a treasure in the antique & collectible shop we've opened in the lower level of our home. So glad we had just what she was looking for! It was a pleasure to meet and visit with all of you briefly. Hope you'll return again soon! Lu & Larry

Bike and hike and relax.........

  • 5 of 5

Our stay exceeded our expectations! What a peaceful place to rest after a long day of hiking and biking. Such a large and open living area for all 4 of us to find our space. We had a nice fire in the outdoor pit and enjoyed the town fireworks in the evening from the huge bay window. We visited the sweet little piggies in their secret home in the woods. (You would never know they are there). We will be back!

Quiet, cozy and relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

We were in town for a wedding and were looking for a nice place to relax outside of the events of the wedding we were attending. LuAnn was very helpful at check-in and showing us around the property. The property is beautiful and spacious! It was a warm weekend and the AC in the apartment works great! We stayed very comfortable the whole time.. The apartment is well furnished and the kitchen is well equipped as we brought food for meals to cook. It's incredibly quiet and cozy. Highly recommend this for anyone who would be in the area as the price is right and the amenities are just perfect, I would definitely stay here again when I am in the area. Thanks to Larry and LuAnn!
