In 1831, William Penny Brookes returned to Much Wenlock to take over his father's GP practice. In 1850 Brookes formed the Wenlock Olympian Class. The first Games, held in October 1850, were a mixture of athletics and also traditional country sports such as quoits, football and cricket. These early Games sometimes included a ' fun' event; once a wheelbarrow race, another year an old woman's race for a pound of tea, these events were not usually a part of the general programme. The Wenlock Olympian Society Annual Games are still held, every July, at the Windmill Field though this area is now designated the Gaskell Recreation Ground. From the beginning some events were open to all-comers.

Location; Location; Location.

Shropshire is an undiscovered and beautiful County and provides a great opportunity to get away from the worries of the world. Shropshire has only one Motorway, lots of open countryside; villages; pubs; and super welcoming people.

The county of Shropshire covers a large area of 1235 square miles (319,736 hectares) and is situated in the West Midlands. The population density is 98 per square km.. compare that to the to the UK average of 273 per sq km and the 9 London boroughs with over 10,000 people per square km and you see how rural and peaceful Shropshire actually is.

Results from the 2011 Census show that there are only 306,100 people living in Shropshire compared to the UK population of 66,299,350 covering 242,495 km²

What better place than a sauna? The environment of a sauna promotes good feelings and soothes a troubles mind. It is not easy to feel bad in a sauna and the feelings of relaxation and peace tend to stay with you long after the sweating is over. PLEASE NOTE Those with existing medical conditions such as having heart problems, high or low blood pressure and women who are pregnant should be cautious about using a sauna and, for people with these kinds of conditions and others who have some concerns over their health; you should refrain from using a sauna. There is an historic castle, a fascinating market on Saturdays, and lots of interesting shops for you to peruse. There are also attractions like the Severn Valley Railway running from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster and which passes Astbury Falls at Eardington where you can simply stand and return the happy waves of the passengers on the steam train if you haven’t taken a ride. You can either dine on the railway, or stop at any of the main towns and dine locally. There is the ability to hire a canoe from Bridgnorth, paddle down the Severn, have a pub lunch, and ride back on railway. Astbury is only a mile or so from Chelmarsh, and walking or riding on the Jack Mytton Way is a great way to spend time when staying at Bentley Lodge. Local fishing on the river Severn and also at Astbury Falls available by appointment

We have been coming back to the lodge for many years and for good reason. We really love the quiet ambiance of the area and the lodge has all the facilities you will need and more. Fantastic!

Luxury

Very well equipped lodge. We loved the wine, truffles etc. Thankyou. The only disappointment was not being able to see the lake. Apart from that, it was superb.

Beautiful and peaceful accommodation in the hearth of nature

  • 5 of 5

We spent a nice vacation in this beautifully decorated wooden lodge. In the house is everything you need to prepare all kinds of meals. It's also really good to have a sauna in the house. The lodge is best equipped from all our houses so far we had been in it. We all enjoyed our staying. Nearby town Bridgnorth is also very lovely. We also visited nearby Astbury golf course, which is very nice and also the prices are very acceptable.

We'll definitely come back.

certainly not luxury

  • 2 of 5

I am sure that you really love your holiday lodge and spend some great times there but it did not suit us and we did not consider it matched the description .The mattresses were uncomfortable. The bed linen and towels are poor quality. The top inside of the microwave is covered in mould and if you try to use the grill the smell is unbelievable. The filter in the dishwasher had not been cleaned for a long time. The showers are difficult to regulate and the floors in the bathrooms had not been washed for some time. The general level of cleanliness was poor. There was broken glass under a chair in the living area. The photograph from the balcony was taken a long time ago so does not show how it is today.Your neighbours have built their toilet for their two dogs immediately outside your bedroom window. Not ideal.

A fantastic relaxing weekend!

  • 5 of 5

After getting stuck in London Friday rush hour traffic we were hoping for something special and we certainly got it. The place is lovely with everything you could need. Lots of great little touches such as milk to go with tea and coffee to help settle in alongside games, CD's and DVD's. The cabin was so nice we spent a lot of time relaxing there and did not explore fully the local area. Would definitely recommend and we expect to revisit.
