The Olympian Connection. William Penny Brookes was born in Much Wenlock in 1809 where his father was one of the local doctors. The family house is in Wilmore Street opposite the Parish Church. In 1831, William Penny Brookes returned to Much Wenlock to take over his father's GP practice. In 1850 Brookes formed the Wenlock Olympian Class. The first Games, held in October 1850, were a mixture of athletics and also traditional country sports such as quoits, football and cricket. These early Games sometimes included a ' fun' event; once a wheelbarrow race, another year an old woman's race for a pound of tea, these events were not usually a part of the general programme. The Wenlock Olympian Society Annual Games are still held, every July, at the Windmill Field though this area is now designated the Gaskell Recreation Ground. From the beginning some events were open to all-comers.

Bentley Lodge Weekend Stay

  • 5 of 5

We came for a romantic weekend break for my wife's 30th birthday and i can honestly say it was amazing. The pictures are beautiful but don't do it justice. Inside the lodge is everything you could need. Jan & Paul are very welcoming through booking and on arrival. There is so much to do out and about. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be booking to go back again. Thanks Jan & Paul

Owner's Response: Thanks for your wonderful comments. We try hard to make booking; arranging; travelling and arrival all a smooth process, and Jan does go the extra mile with personal welcomes. We have been very fortunate to have 2 couples stay at Bentley Lodge in Astbury Falls with this name... a very unusual co-incidence.. but a very happy one, and we look forward to welcoming both couples back.. and perhaps being host to even more.

Bentley Lodge Astbury falls

  • 5 of 5

This property is decorated and equipped to the very highest standard. The peace and tranquility of its location is exceptional. Although you can no longer see the lakes from the lodge or walk around the grounds this does not detract from the serenity and location of the lodge. Jan and Paul provide a wealth of information, a lovely welcome pack and nothing is too much trouble for them.

This lodge provides five star luxury, an ideal base to explore and walk in the Severn valley. Highly recommended.

Great stay in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

Jan and Paul took care of everything. All instructions to use the lodge were present or provided. We stayed for two weeks and in the middle we got clean bed sheets and towels. Great.

The lodge was clean on arrival and very well equipped. Every thing you can think of was present! In some cases we didn't know where to put our own things.

We were surprised by the beauty of Shropshire. As regular visitors of the south we very much loved this area. Great nature, lovely towns and a lots of activities in a 25 mile radius. A small disadvantage is that the lodge has nothing in the direct neighbourhood, so you need your car on almost every occasion, but the quietness around the lodge is lovely.

Lovely relaxing break

  • 4 of 5

We have just had a 3 night stay at Bentley lodge which has been perfect. If you are looking for a peaceful relaxing break then this is the place for you. The owners,Jan and Paul are very helpful and friendly and have everything available that you need and more!!. The only disappointment we had is that you can't see the lake due to the trees between the lodge and the lake but please be assured that this did not spoil our enjoyment. Plenty to do in the area or just relax on the veranda. Thanks for a great break.

Absolutely so peaceful!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful much needed break was had! The surroundings are really peaceful. There's so much to see and do locally, we had a fantastic time.

The Lodge itself has everything you can imagine, and felt very welcoming. Everywhere was spotless and the welcome pack was very thoughtful.

We will definitely be returning for a break again in the future.
