Located near Carcassonne the property is in the heart of the Razes wine region with views to the pyrenees and just 1 hour from Mediterranean beaches at Narbonne. Carcassonne 'La Cite': La Cité Médiévale

The medieval walled town lies on the right bank of the river Aude. It has 52 towers connected by two rings of battlements that stretch for 3km.

Built over the ruins of a former Roman fortress, 'La Cite' of Carcassonne was occupied by both the Visigoths and the Saracens, before becoming the theatre of Pope Innocent III's crusades against the 'Cathar' heretics in the 13th century.

La Bastide St Louis

The town situated on the left bank was all but destroyed during the crusades but was rebuilt in 1260 to a chess board layout. The first of its kind in Europe it is the template for the linear design of many modern cities.

Despite the attentions of the 'Prince Noir' who set the Bastide ablaze in 1355, the town retains the ancient architecture to this day.

Exhilarating Christmas Market

The center of Carcassonne is transformed into a winter wonderland, with market stalls surrounding an ice rink which provides the perfect focal point for the festive season

Canal Du Midi: The Canal du Midi and the Canal de la Robine. Undertaken by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century, to link the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, it crosses the Aude river from West to East over a distance of more than 100km.

The Canal du Midi runs 240 km and is filled by a complicated system of feeder canals and reservoirs. It includes surviving examples of the earliest inventions related to hydraulic engineering and associated construction works. Thanks to some 350 such works (bridges, locks, aqueducts, overflow outlets), a number of which have never been altered since their first construction and the towpath with 300 year old trees, the Canal du Midi was included by UNESCO in December 1996 on its World Heritage List.

About Heather Fisher

My Affair with Carcassonne began in 1974 when visiting the fairy tale castle and vibrant city as a child. It was many years after this first visit before I returned to live in the Carcassonne area with my wife and family and it is now our great pleasure to open our home to travelers and first time visitors alike so that they can enjoy the unique character of this dramatic and un-spoilt region of France.

Heather Fisher purchased this house in 2004

Why Heather Fisher chose Limoux area

Heather and I found this property, while living in Montreal, when our first son was just 3 months old. We loved the idea of being within the perimeter of the Mazerolles du Razes village, although equally important was the south facing garden which is completely private, with views over vineyards and sunflower fields to the Pyrenees.

We lived in the property for 5 years before returning to England, with both our sons attending the primary school in the village.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hello Heather and Alan,

Just a quick note to say thank you for sharing your house with us.

We all had a thoroughly splendid time in the house, so comfortable and a splendid pool.

We are considering a holiday again next year as we had such a lovely time.

Would you like us to write a review on trip advisor? It would be very positive.

Many thanks,

Gaynor and family

Very bad rental !

  • 1 of 5

Very bas rental ! We never rented a house in such a state of disrepair.

The equipment was not nearly enough for 12 people (6 chairs, half broken chairs inside, no umbrella when the terrace is in full sun from 14h, no drying rack, all broken pegs , dishes insufficient: not enough bowls, cups, and almost exclusively plastic glasses ...). Six additional chairs were purchased during our stay (and new glasses ... plastic again ...) but this does not clear our negative impression.

Electricity is in a state of dilapidation worrying, the internet does not work continuously.

The fridge in the house did not work, as many switches and / or lamps, the hood of the kitchen neither.

Water dripped from the ceiling when we took showers on the first floor and the hot water tank is probably too small for the size of the house.

The garden was not maintained at all. The cleaning was not done properly when we arrived (some bins not emptied, broken glass next to a child bed, dead insects ...).

Football table indicated on the website is not present.

After three days in the house at least 15 cm of water level were missing in the swimming pool and the filtration therefore did not work properly. Local correspondents have passed and we have explained that there was a leak at the pump, they re-filled the pool but the plumber didn’t come during our stay.

Really disappointing ...

Great house, lots of history and character.

  • 5 of 5

Set in a very peaceful village and surrounded by beautiful farmland and countryside - the walk through the vines to the next village in the morning for bread and a coffee at the bar is highly recommended. If you want peace, tranquillity and privacy this is the place.

The house is genuinely full of character and history, the house, the garden and pool are really well maintained and it's a great place to relax and stay.

If you're after a beach holiday or want to be close to bars etc then this isn't likely to be the ideal location but if you want to experience the real France and have the amazing Pyrenees on your door step then book this house now. I love it and will be back.

3 wonderful weeks in September.

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a holiday in a typically French house where you can relax and unwind then this is ideal. It is situated in a small, old, circular village which is very peaceful with friendly locals. The large, sheltered garden is wonderful to sit where there is always a spot in the sun or the shade or you can sit on the large, raised terrace and admire the views while eating your meals. The big swimming pool was also superb with a shallow section for toddlers.Debbie the manager was extremely helpful and friendly and sorted out a couple of minor problems (supply a fan, washing basket etc.).In brief, a lovely old house where we would stay again and definitely recommend to families with children.Plenty of places to visit including the Med. or just enjoy the lovely old house with its wide staircase and tiled floors.

Wonderful Family Holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful country home. The caretakers were both very nice and welcoming. There was plenty of room which meant that everyone (in our large group) had a space to relax in! The house was also well equipped with everything from toys for the kids to washing machines and a large sized garden.

Everyone absolutely loved the pool (especially the kids) which was well maintained and had lots of privacy.

The surrounding areas were magnificent, with incredible views of the Pyrenees and colourful French countryside. The house is located in a quaint little village close to Carcassonne and under an hour’s drive from the nearest beach.

We’ll definitely be returning next year!

Très agréable

  • 5 of 5

Great days in October

  • 5 of 5

We spent two great weeks in this lovely house. Although we had some problems with a heavy rain storm on our arrival day, we had no problem to contact Mimmi, the housekeeper, and the owner to had the problems fixed within a few days. Everybody was friendly and helpful.

The house is situated in a beautiful landscape, with a fantastic view from the terrace, a great garden and even the pool we could use due to the warm and sunny weather in October.

The house plus the stable is big enough for up to 3 families and the kitchen and the dining area is big enough to host all guests. The washing machine was great, but a dryer would be helpful even if you have small children with you.

Mazerolles-du-Razes is situated perfect to visit Carcassonne, Mirepoix, Narbonne and the beaches. Even a visit in Andorra is possible!
