History of The Gate House:
When I was a little girl I decided to run away . I was going to go out and make a life of my own. After all I was five years old. I was not going to be held back by the rules of my home any longer.I was going to go get my own house and make my own rules. It was going to be my dream house. My mother helped me pack and told me she loved me and I was welcomed home any time. When I got to the gate I found the street. I was not allowed to go in the street. I went back into the house and asked my mother if I could go in the street. She said I could not, but I could come sit with her and have cookies and milk for a while. I never left again. But, I never stopped dreaming about having my own house and how fine it would be some day.
When we bought the property we really bought it for the luxury of the front house. We had no idea about the history of the home. As we took possession of the property we investigated every square inch. We brought flamboyant ladies hats out of the attic and romantic letters written during the war. There were postcards from all over the world!
As we read the postcards and letters we became curious about the original owners. There was something unfinished. Dreams yet fulfilled. We began to meet neighbors and ask questions about the original owners of the house. We were given a loving history of the lady who dreamed a dream that never came true.
The older house was the original house built before World War 2. The family planned to live in what would later become the servants quarters until they built their own house which would be in front of the servants quarters. World War II broke out and they weren't able to get building supplies to build their own home. They raised 5 children in the 1,000 sq foot, 3 room house. When the time came they could afford to build the big house they would need the money to send a child to college or a wedding to pay for. Well, when you have five kids it's a never ending story. The dream of the big house never happened for the woman who built the servants quarters for her own temporary home. She had such a giving, loving legacy. It's as if she became the servant herself. Every elderly neighbor had a story to tell of how this beautiful woman had given more than she had to give her whole life. How she had been the best cook and invited many to come stay in her home . She loved to have guests and was never bitter she had never had her dream home.
In the 1970's one of the daughters built the large home in the front . The daughter lived in the large home and took care of the mother the rest of her life until she was moved to hospice care. The daughter and her family lived in the big house until they retired and moved away.
When the elderly neighbors told us the story of the woman who had a dream that never came true we fell in love with the woman and with the small house. We decided to invest time and money to make the house a place we thought the lady should have lived in all her life. We put up walls and, replaced electrical wires and modernized the house.
We rented it to college kids. It just wasn't right. The house was not loved as it should have been. At last we found the answer. It should be a guest house! Now, there will be lots of visitors from all over the world just like the post cards.
And low and behold everyone who comes to the Gate House falls in love with it too!
My husband and I have been married 45 years. We have three children and 7 "grandblessings".
We own a locksmith shop, Alpha Lock Amarillo, Inc where we sell, service and install safes, vaults and locks. We are on 24 hour call, 7 days a week.
I am also a neuromuscular massage therapist. After 26 years I have scaled my practice back and spend my time mainly on the guest house , the locksmith shop and raising our 13 year old daughter.
We love meeting new people and we love hearing how clean and comfortable our guest house is. It is so much fun to know a guest is coming and ask what we can do to make their stay more comfortable then reading the posts they leave us. We have a 5 Star rating on other sites and have every intention on making our guests so happy with us the wont just write us a nice review they will return to stay with us.
Gabrielle Stanhope purchased this house in 1998
We've all heard about the one place in the rain forest in Washington State where there is no sound. It must be much like our guest house. I've told you about the history of the house and how we love the story of the first owner. But, the silence is the real advantage.
Owning a locksmith company we have provided a lot more security than is needed for this neighborhood.
We recently had a Neighborhood Crime Watch meeting. The officer presenting the program reported their were to incidents reported in our block in the past year. One an icey morning someone slid into a gas meter. The other call was about an abandoned car being parked in the street.
While it is true high profile people will like the Gate House due to the privacy and security we did not deliberately make it so secluded. It just happened. We use the same level of security in the Gate House as we do in our locksmith business. We NEVER tell who is staying in the Gate House or who has been there in the past.
We will ask for a four digit code to enter in the door lock before you arrive. Then I'll text and ask about your breakfast food preferences. We may chat back and forth or we may get straight to the point and let you enjoy your trip. We have posted our 24 hour contact number in the house for your convenience.
We clean the house ourselves. We don't trust someone else to prepare for our guests as we do. The guests are just that, "Our Guests". We try to always have a positive review from previous guests. When we prepare for the guests ourselves we KNOW every dish is clean , every bed made fresh, every tub sanitized.
There is a point where friendliness begins to be intrusion.
We are friendly, we help our guests get settled, we want to know when they check out. Other than that we leave the guests alone to enjoy all we provide.
We are centrally located in the city of Amarillo. Getting around town usually means a 20 minute or less travel time.
We are centrally located in the Texas Panhandle. Amarillo is more or less the commercial hub of the entire 26,000 square mile Panhandle and parts of 3 neighboring states.
We are rapidly growing and have many business and pleasure travelers. We invite our guests to stay a night or years. There is no limit to our hospitality.
We are just minutes from the hospitals, the court houses, banking, oil management companies, wind energy and all the local attractions like Palo Duro Canyon.
We very much enjoyed the stay nice clean place would recommend it to anyone .
The Gate House worked comfortable for our trip to Amatillo! Cheaper and quieter than a hotel and the owner Gabriella was so friendly and accommodating!
The house was great! It had everything that we needed. It was neat and clean with lots of great touches- Alarm system, off street parking with locking gate, full size fridge and washer/dryer. Wish we had those at the places we stayed in the middle of our trip! I would stay here again anytime.
Everything was just perfect, the size of the place was bigger than I expected they made really good use of the space they had, the house was charming and they were really accommodating and attentive. They wanted to make sure we got there safely, had everything we needed, and even baked us some sweets. I would highly recommend this place to everyone!!
Anyone coming should know there's only space to park one vehicle. If you have a second or trailer you can park in the alley which is what I did. The price was great. The location was close to I-40. Its location was in the owners back yard. The owners are extremely nice. Communication was excellent. Brownies were awesome. Will stay here every time I come to Amarillo. Glad I found it. 😃👍
Don't miss Palo Duro State Park, the second largest canyon in the United States. The musical drama, TEXAS runs all summer.
There are also balloon festivals at the park, horse back riding, camping, hiking and tons of scenic photo adventures waiting for you!
