About Ilona and Michael Czinkota

The owners are beach lovers, and Ilona is an architect, so when the time came for rejuvenating the house, all stops were pulled out!

Why Ilona and Michael Czinkota chose Outer Banks

Our neighborhood, Sanderling features a nature trail, immaculate grounds and a new community pool on the Currituck Sound, along with tennis courts and a boat ramp. The fitness center (with a view!) is available for a small fee. The Sanderling Inn across the street from the clubhouse has a decadent spa, outside bar, nightly fire pits with local musicians entertaining, and two of the area's finest dining establishments, the Life Saving Station and Kimball's Kitchen. The area offers direct access to the Audobon Nature Preserve, a dedicated Bird Sanctuary.

Come home to The Simple Life after partaking in the numerous fun activities offered by the area, from deep sea fishing to parasailing, golfing, exploring the area's lighthouses, wild horses and abundant history, and enjoying our pristine beaches.

What makes this house unique

The house is well located, spacious, well equipped and beautiful. The renovation kept the original character and simplicity of the house, but it offers you all the ease and comfort you may desire during your hard earned vacation time. And wait until you try the open shower in the main level master bath! The 200 yards stroll to the beach under the huge trees closing over the street is lovely, and your children are safe riding their bikes, exploring the nature trail, or playing hopscotch.

A special time is the fall and winter, when the crowds go home, the fireplace is glowing, and you curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine and a good movie...here is to The Simple Life!

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house was perfect for our family vacation to Duck.

The location was great--very easy, short walk to the beach. Kind of between downtown Duck and Corolla so easy to get to either place for restaurants, groceries, shopping, or water activities. Super quiet neighborhood.

The house is very nice inside. The kitchen is well-stocked (we only wished for a few steak knives and one really good, sharp knife); plenty of pots and pans and dishes and even storage containers for leftovers. The dishwasher worked well and was quiet. The linens and towels provided were plentiful and fine--nothing fancy but it's the beach! They even had great beach towels!!! The washer and dryer work great (though the washer is a bit loud). The main level master bedroom is nice with the little private deck. The bed was comfortable (they all were) and the bathroom is a MASTERPIECE. Honestly, the shower is an experience. Everyone in our family used it at least once during the week since it was so incredible. The great room is perfect for tv watching (tv works fine and basic cable is sufficient) and playing games. The screened porch off the great room--with a ceiling fan and citronella candles--was perfect for our crab feast and for card games and drinking! If you want sun, you can sit on the open deck off of the great room also. The dining room is fine; the table is fairly large. There is another full bath int he hallway so that everyone does not have to use the master bedroom bath. Upstairs bedrooms were great--ceiling fans throughout, comfy beds. Good sized televisions in two rooms and a nice bathroom accessible from the master but also from the hallway for sharing. There is another half bath in the hallway as well. So plenty of potties!!! The outside shower is the best outside shower I have ever used in all my years of beach vacations--and that's a lot of years. Not only was the shower head better than mine at home, it also had the body sprayers to hit your torso. A nice changing area with hooks made using this shower for a full shower easy. That said, I would only ever shower in the main level master bath shower because, as I said, it was crazy amazing. I actually shot a video of it to show friends. The house is nicely decorated; all furniture was comfortable and the house was very clean. You do need to bring beach chairs. The only negative, and I mention this only for the true arachnophobe, is that there are a lot of spiders--but only outside.

We really ejoyed our stay this summer. The house was perfect for two families - enough space to spread out, and great common areas. Proximity to the beach was key. Really enjoyed the beach after dark, as well as watching the sunset from the community dock. Very quiet and safe neighborhood. Would highly recommend this house!

Great value for the money

  • 4 of 5

Actually our stay deserves 4 1/2 stars. This roomy house, situated on a quiet tree lined street, was spotless when we arrived, is only a 1/2 block from the ocean, w/4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths and an especially convenient outdoor shower. Also a screened in porch for outdoor meals. Anyone can be quite comfortable. The kitchen is cheerful and modern and we brought every type of food item we could think of which all fit nicely into the refrigerator. There was a good supply of dishes, glasses, barware, and eating utensils. Additionally, the house was well stocked with cookware. However, the owner should have advised us to bring extra paper towels and bathroom tissue (we had 4 little kids with us). It's a long ride to Harris Teeter to pick up these things. We brought charcoal to use the Weber kettle but the one at the house had a broken lid and rusty grills. It is time for a new one. We still managed, however, to cook our steaks outdoors. All in all, if you are looking for a four bedroom house I think "The Simple Life" is great value for the amount you will be spending. Our vacation was great.

Owner's Response: Dear guests, Thank you for taking the time to write a review! Glad you enjoyed yourself and particularly happy that you found the house well located, comfortable, well stocked, and spotless! We have a wonderful cleaning crew! Also thank you for pointing out a couple of shortcomings. As to the paper products: while we place a full roll of toilet paper in each bathroom, and a fresh roll of paper towel in the kitchen at check in for each guest, we consider that a courtesy. Based on your comment I just added and highlighted a note to the description of the amenities on the website to please bring your own supply for the duration of your stay. Thank you for pointing out the need for such a note! The lid of the one year old Webber was fixed, no more wobbly handle! Cleaning of the grill is tricky; we ask our guests to please do as you would at home- namely clean the grill after each use- and provide a long handled wire brush and a bucket for that purpose. Our cleaners check on it at change over, and take care of it should a guest forget about it and leave it full. Beyond it there is not much we can do. I asked the cleaning crew to make sure that the wire brush and the ash bucket is placed right next to it, so the guests can keep it clean after each use as they would at home. We hope that on your next visit you will find every little detail to your satisfaction! And please, continue to let us know if you have any questions or comments!

Car: recommended

Some of the Things to do Besides the Obvious:

Sanderling Pool & Tennis Courts:

About ¾ of a mile north, an easy bike ride, are the Sanderling neighborhood amenities. Take a picnic as there is no food close by except for dressier occasions. There are snacks and sodas for purchase from the attendant.

Sanderling’s Dock at Sunset:

As you walk out of the neighborhood, cross Duck Road and walk slightly south. You’ll see a Sanderling marker. Walk through the trees at the marker and you’ll see the dock. Sunset is spectacular here.

A great pastime for kids

Go to Bob’s Bait and Tackle in town. It’s a small shack on the sound side. He’ll outfit you with strings, weights and chicken necks or backs. He’ll also show you how to use them.

This is the most popular activity in the area. The best bike rental shop is on the ocean side in a small, stand-alone building. The owner is always on the premises and will take great care of you. Biking at the beach is easy for all ages and skill sets. Great bikeway from Sanderling to Duck. Ride into town one morning for breakfast at the Duck Deli. It’s about three miles each way.

Duck Watersports is practically across the street from Sanderling’s entrance. It’s just a little south on Duck Road. It has wave runners, para-sailing, wind surfing and kayaks.

Fort Raleigh, The Lost Colony, Manteo & Dolphin Tours:

English settlers led by Sir Walter Raleigh docked in Manteo, NC and started one of the earliest English colonies in America. It’s south and east of the cottage by about 45 minutes. There is a small museum as well as beautiful English Gardens. If you expect a giant stockade type fort, you’ll be disappointed. The “fort” is really just a short, four-sided burmed hill, but it’s still worth the wooded walk.

The main attraction is The Lost Colony. It is a bigger than life outdoor drama performed by some of North Carolina’s finest aspiring actors for 73 years. The show was written by Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Green, who became the king of outdoor drama with this show as well as one in the NC mountains called Unto These Hills. There’s not a bad seat in the house, but you should reserve tickets before you go because it is hugely popular. Kids love the cannon fire, Indians and pilgrims. The theatre overlooks the sound and is a gorgeous sight. It makes you realize why a colony was started there.

Manteo is a fun little town. Along the sound and one block back are cute shops and eateries. There are also a number of boats offering Dolphin Tours. The dolphin tours are just okay. Many times there are no dolphins sighted. If you’re just up for a boat ride, go for it. You’ll see the Wanchese fishing village and the Bodie Island Lighthouse as well as lots of birds.

See the Outer Banks from the Air:

If you really want to see the lay of the land, take a flight over the islands. The ride in an open cockpit tail dragger was a thrill for those in our family who aren’t big chickens.

Wanchese: Go to Wanchese about 4:00 pm. It’s a good 45 minutes from the cottage, but definitely worth the drive. This is a working fishing village, so if you’re lucky you’ll see rusty trawlers and men in waders loading or off-loading the day’s catch at “Fisherman’s Warf”, and the address (4683 Mill Landing Road Wanchese, NC 27981, 252-473-6004) .

Wright Brothers Memorial: a must see for kids and flight buffs of all ages. The Wright Brothers of Ohio, credited with the first air plane flight, achieved their fame at Kitty Hawk. A replica of the plane is on site. Definitely worth your time!

Wild horse tours: descendents of Spanish ponies roam the beach about 20 miles north of us. Don't miss the guided tour in an SUV. The guides know where the horses are-and remember to take your camera!

NC Aquarium, Roanoke: about 45 minutes south of the cottage on Roanoke Island: while it is constantly improving, it is still mainly for young children.

Currituck light house: fully restored and still working today, it is about 25 minutes north of the cottage and a must see! If you have the time, also che4ck the Bodie and Cape Hatteras lighthouses (the last one is a full day trip!)
