Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Placida - Beach Cottage

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Our Beach Cottage is located on Little Gasparilla Island, a remote and bridge-less barrier island with no cars, stores, or restaurants of any kind. It is only accessible by boat and that makes for a wonderfully quiet and private vacation! If this is going to be your first visit to Little Gasparilla Island, we expect you have many questions about it, so don't hesitate to ask!

This immaculate 2 bedroom/2 bath beachfront cottage boasts the most secluded spot on Little Gasparilla Island --- along with first-class amenities, wireless internet, kayaks for exploring the bay's quiet coves and keys, docks, beach gear, recreational gear, and more.

360 degrees of porches and sun decks overlook 360 degrees of un-interrupted beach, waves, dunes, lagoons, island flora and fauna!

Little Gasparilla has miles of beautiful white sand beach, but this cottage is the only house that borders the protected state park, beach and lagoons --- over a mile of completely undeveloped natural beach, without any houses, lies right outside the door.

Our cottage is available for weekly or long-term rental (please contact owners directly for discounts on stays of three weeks or longer.)

The cottage is part of 'Osprey Point', a private bay-to-beach retreat, surrounded by the Gulf and lagoon to the west, Lemon Bay state aquatic preserve to the east, Don Pedro state nature preserve to the north, and undeveloped privately-held land to the south. It is the only house on the island that overlooks the beach and a natural lagoon (part of the pass that once connected Little Gasparilla Sound to the Gulf of Mexico). Almost an island unto itself, the cottage can only be accessed by the private boardwalks that stretch from the dock on the bay to the dunes on the beach, winding through picturesque mangroves along the way.

There is a king bed in the master bedroom and two single beds in the second bedroom. A loft is suitable for an older child or teen who is capable of negotiating its tricky ‘ship’s ladder’ access (air mattress provided). The cottage is ideal for a couple with 1 or 2 children, 1 to 4 single adults, honeymooners, or 2 couples who don't mind sharing a bathroom.

The cottage is built of cedar with hardwood floors, a wrap-around screened porch, and deep overhanging eaves to shade the sun. Eight sets of French doors (two sets in each bedroom, two in the living area and two in the kitchen/dining area) open onto the screen porch to take full advantage of the ocean’s sights, sounds, and breezes. Cathedral ceilings and ceiling fans in each room (complemented by central heat/air conditioning) provide year-round comfort.

In addition to the wrap-around screened porch there is a large sundeck off the kitchen and main living area, and another sundeck off the master bedroom. These decks and porches offer many comfortable options for ‘al fresco’ seating, grilling and dining, or for simply enjoying the Florida sunshine.

The spacious and fully-screened ground level provides a covered, shady space for hammocks and chairs, plus a second bathroom, laundry facilities, and a second refrigerator/freezer.

Another sundeck, located at ground-level just behind the dunes, offers a convenient place to stash beach gear. (All gear must be removed from the beach after sundown in order to protect the nesting and hatchling sea turtles.) Showerheads and foot washing stations are also conveniently located along the boardwalk.

Additional notes:

Little Gasparilla is a barrier island, one of the glistening white ‘string of pearls’ that stretch almost 100 miles along Florida’s southwest coast from Tampa to Sanibel. While not far from Disney, it’s a world away from the crowds, high-rise condos, and T-shirt shops of the east coast. In fact, Little Gasparilla Island can be accessed only by boat (either water taxi or private boat ). There is no bridge or car ferry --- and therefore there are no roads or cars, no commercial services or shopping, and very few people. You’ll quickly notice that the osprey, eagles, pelicans and shore birds far outnumber humans. In fact, there are many days when you’ll see more dolphins in the bay than people on the beach.

Cell and smart phone connections work great through your own subscription. While there is no cable or satellite television service, there is a TV and a “family-friendly” VHS movie library, along with traditional board games and an iPod/MP3/CD audio system.

As is common in the coastal and Caribbean islands, water is provided from a cistern system which captures, filters, and treats rainwater. While this means remembering to conserve water, especially during the dry season, such systems provide water even more pure than is generally found in large municipal systems.

The cottage is elevated and not handicapped-accessible. All guests must be physically capable of negotiating stairs, climbing in and out of boats, and getting on and off of docks.

About Rebecca or Kristin

For the past 25 years we have resided in Virginia, most of that in Arlington, a suburb of Washington, DC. Rebecca grew up vacationing on Little Gasparilla Island and we began bringing our own family here many years ago. With the kids grown and 'work from anywhere' technology, we are now full-time residence in our bay home on Little Gasparilla at Osprey Point.

Heck, why not?

Rebecca or Kristin purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Rebecca or Kristin chose Florida South Central Gulf Coast

Little Gasparilla is a unique and beautiful island, a delightful bit of the 'Old Florida' that is so hard to find these days. It's off the beaten path, very quiet, yet always very interesting. Sunrises, sunsets, and everything in between. Nature just seems to know how to put on a show.

We really appreciate the fact that you need to take a boat to get here. It's part of the adventure. There's something about that boat ride that just makes everyday stress and the 'busyness of life' quickly fade away .

This beach cottage is the most recent addition to 'Osprey Point', a private enclave at the north end of Little Gasparilla Island. With lots of open space, mangrove lagoons, palm trees, boardwalks and two docks to complement the beautiful beach (all bordered by protected nature preserves), Osprey Point is simply a wonderful place to be.

What makes this cottage unique

This house stands by itself. . .literally. A mile of completely natural beach (no houses) and 6 additional miles of nearly natural beach lie right outside the door.

Because of our uniquely natural setting we enjoy an abundance of wildlife, native palms and plants, and open spaces not generally found on the island.

And this cottage has lots of porches and decks from which to enjoy the view and Florida sunshine in near-total seclusion, surrounded by nature. Yet it's really not that far from the mainland attractions and services.

Wow!! What a place!! They aren't kidding when they say secluded, beachfront home. It was a perfect place for my husband and I to celebrate his 40th birthday. Rebecca, Kristin and Andy were informative, responsive and fabulous people to deal with. If a relaxing, stress-free, beach vacation is something you are looking for...look no further. This is the place!!

Island paradise found!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at the beach cottage! What a perfect place for my husband and I to celebrate our two birthdays. We unplugged from the stress of the world and just enjoyed God's beautiful creation which this house makes it so easy to do. We loved watching and identifying birds from the deck overlooking Don Pedro state park and got some great pictures of the great blue heron who appeared to be posing for us. We swam and fished in the ocean and fished and kayaked in the bay. We enjoyed watching the sunrise out of the bedroom window in the mornings and the sunset on the beach in the evenings. We even saw the night blooming cereus make its once a year appearance. Andrew and Sydnah were so kind and helpful to us all week. We appreciated their warm southern hospitality. We hope to come back soon and escape to this beautiful island paradise!

A Perfect Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was the most amazing beach vacation that our family has ever had, even better than we could have imagined it to be. For those wanting to "leave it all behind" and spend quality time together in a pristine, secluded location, this is perfect. The beach house itself is lovely with high-end appliances (coffee machine, grill, washer/dryer, etc), fantastic decks and screened-in porches leading to the surrounding 360* beautiful views, extremely comfortable beds, hammock perfect for napping, an outdoor shower.... too many great features to list. We spent 6+ hours each day with our kids, ages 10 and 13, on the very private, beautiful beach where we made a great shelter with the large canopy & chairs that the owners provided. The sunsets are gorgeous. We enjoyed shelling & playing in the waves! In the afternoons we went kayaking on the bay side. Overall, we were amazed at how much wildlife we saw between the Gulf and bay sides, including witnessing a loggerhead sea turtle nesting, dolphins, manatees, a variety of fish including jumping fish, a wide assortment of crabs, armadillos, and a variety of birds that we caught close-up views with using the binoculars in the cottage. A lot of nature to explore right in our "backyard". We can't end the review without saying what kind and good-natured people the owners are. They are the best of hosts! We certainly hope to return next year, and possibly even bring more of our family and rent out the adjacent boat house for them. This is an amazing getaway to a beautiful, secluded corner of the world!

Best beach vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

Rebecca and Andy are the perfect hosts! The beach cottage is just as described and so much more! As Interior Designers my husband and I seek out vacation spots that meet our standards of design, color, comfort and convenience and this place gets top marks! Fresh orchids in every room, screened-in porch on 3 sides (which means that we could leave the many French doors open to enjoy the breezes), comfortable bed and furniture. We loved the boardwalk over the lagoon to the beach - not only picturesque but it provides extra privacy from the beach. That said, the beach was so secluded and private and having the use of comfortable beach chairs and a pop-up for protection from the sun made for a perfect beach experience. The Gulf water is so clear and turquoise! We snorkeled, collected many shells and walked for miles each day. We brought over all of our supplies via the water taxi and loved cooking on the grill on the deck. We enjoyed our evening meals on the side screened-in porch where we watched the woodpeckers tending their nest. We are planning to return with family members in November and will rent the bay-side cottage as well. Thank you for a fabulous escape!

Paradise Found!

  • 5 of 5

As another reviewer noted—I have only one hesitation in writing this: you will book the week that we want to go back.

The property is exceptional in every way. The interior is perfectly maintained, like visiting someone’s guest house. The outside is breathtaking: your neighbor to the south is hidden from view while your neighbor to the north is a state park. We kayaked (with kayaks supplied by our hosts), beach combed, explored the state park, fished, built sand castles and played cards every night in the fully screened downstairs. Did not turn on the TV the entire time we were there.

Your hosts are also exceptional. There was a thunderstorm one night and some of the island temporarily lost power (but we did not). Found a lantern (with a lighter) outside the next morning “just in case.” Ran out of propane for the grill, and we immediately had a spare.

Favorite features: Sunsets, water (tasted better than the hotel by RSW), outside showers, and the upstairs and downstairs screened in areas.

Do not wait a minute longer; book it!
