It's available on a weekly, self-catering basis for large families and business groups seeking the peace and tranquility of this world class (UNESCO) nature reserve region of Catalonia. The historic villa was built in 1900 for Spanish nobility and is very private, surrounded by its own walled grounds, yet is two minutes walk to the town square. It has extensive lounge and dining space with all rooms and hallways built on a grand scale. Nature lovers will enjoy the three huge terraces with breathtaking mountain views. It has five large bedrooms and two bathrooms on the top floor, with cloakrooms on each of the other two floors. Designed for entertaining with huge dining spaces and three lounges, so it's easy to find a quiet corner. Children are well catered for with a separate tv lounge, toys and games, table tennis and outdoor play area with slide, swings and climbing tree. Hi, we are a family of six from London. We moved to Catalonia while the children were still small and had a fantastic few years restoring the house, exploring the region and making friends. The local Catalans enjoy the outdoors, good food and a healthy relaxed lifestyle - we loved the place and will probably end up retiring there!
Lloyd Daniels purchased this villa in 2004
When we discovered it in 2004, despite its near derelict condition, we immediately fell in love with the house and the beautiful mountain village location. A friend in Girona had recommended we look at this house as they liked the idea of sharing drinks on the terrace overlooking the mountains! Two years later, we delivered on the promise. Built around 1900 the house had escaped past fashions of modernisation. It's design and layout are geared towards leisure and entertaining - it was a holiday house for a famous titled publishing family from Barcelona. Now it's a fantastic place for families to relax, have fun and explore the area.
The village of Viladrau is located in Montseny Natural Park, which is a 'secret' gem of Catalonia. It offers a huge variety of unspoilt green waterfall valleys, steep forests of chestnut, pine, beech and oak and high rocky peaks. Top quality Catalalan cuisine can be found in pictureque mountain villages. Viladrau is also an easy drive to Barcelona, Girona, the Pyrenees and the beautiful fishing village beaches of the Costa Brava. Despite being in the centre of the village the house is completely private and really peaceful - and safe!
We found the villa very well equipped and perfect for our needs. It was very spacious, with room for all of us to eat and sit together, or hide away in peace. The kids loved the pool and there were plenty of loungers, fresh towels and outdoor seating. We loved the area, there were loads of fantastic mountain walks starting from the village. We would definitely return. The house is right in the village yet very private and secure for our young ones. Barcelona and Costa Brava beautiful beaches were great for days out, though we did need the car. The local restaurants were great especially the Chalet Coromina - very interesting food! and just across the road. We have no hesitation in recommending the villa to others.
For a big party from ages 6 to 84 plenty of space to explore, plus, enclosed garden and 'home cinema nook' a real bonus. Bedrooms very spacious and comfortable. I slept well and loved a little star gazing on the verandas.
We enjoyed the village (nice bakery and tapas) and surrounding forest and mountains. Some great hikes to suit all ages and lots of help at tourist office. Great food at hotel in next street and very reasonable for good quality.
A real gem of a place and Carmen ( our housekeeper) was extremely helpful. Our host's recommends were well worth following up - from coastal walks to food.
Brilliant home stay.
We had a lovely visit to the villa, what a fantastic house! We loved the village and people, especially Carmen, what a joy to know she was available to us if any probs. Thank you.
The fiesta was on at the weekend so we had a lovely time taking in all the traditional events, the fireworks being the big suprise!!! Amazing.
We are now at home planning a return trip. We recommend Viladrau and the villa to anyone for a super stay. Many thanks again. Linda
Great place. High ceilings for rooms which will be cool in the summer, big living spaces, lots of room. Well-equipped kitchen in the main living area, with a spare downstairs. We were only five, but there was room for many more. Three great balconies which are great places to enjoy a gin and tonic, a glass of white wine or just a cup of tea sitting quietly enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of this somewhat sleepy mountain village.
In the main square there are bars and restaurants, a bank, shops and all the facilities one might reasonably require.
Carmen, who looked after the day-to-day management, was a fount of helpful information. Her daughter works in one of the local restaurants.
We enjoyed walking, the electric bicycles and the whole ambience.
The market in Vic is within easy reach as our various other attractions.
The house is a large old house with lots of atmosphere. It may need some paint here and there, but it's charm will make you forget that. It has a beautiful and very quiet garden and a nice pool. In the garden you can play tabletennis, soccer or just relax.
The most fantastic thing about the house though is the location. We have never felt more welcome, than in this small village. There were hardly any tourists during our stay - so the locals took good care of us :-).
We would love to come back.
Such a stunning house in a beautiful location only a 30 min drive from Girona. We arrived late and had not eaten, Carmel the lovely local manager, arranged for us to eat at the local bar where they laid on some truly authentic local fayre at very short notice which was greatly appreciated and a lovely welcome to this friendly, charming village. The house is immaculate and full of character as well as being extremely spacious. The views are breath taking and the garden ideal for families.
The house has that perfect mix of space and privacy as well as being right in the centre of town.
Cannot fault it we had a really memorable weekend with friends and would definately go back.
Lloyd was a pleasure to do business with and met our every need, thank you!
This huge villa is located in the centre of a picturesque mountain village, just 2 minutes walk from the main square where there are numerous bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. The village is in Montseny Natural Park, a UNESCO protected World Biosphere Reserve and is just 60 minutes from Barcelona, Costa Brava Mediterranean beaches and the Pyrenees, and also just thirty minutes from Girona Airport (Ryanair, Easyjet). The village has all amenities including cafes, restaurants, bakers, butchers, chemist and general stores. Viladrau village is famous for its healthy air and spring water (it has 111 springs!), this along with its sunny dry days and cool nights, have made it the traditional summer retreat for wealthy Barcelonans and Spanish Royalty. It is ideal for groups seeking the peace and tranquility of an unspoilt mountain nature park and also the enjoyment of Catalan culture and cuisine. Viladrau is a walkers paradise - Montseny is packed with walks and cycle tracks. The peak of Matagals (visible from the terrace!) is a great walk from the house and provides views of the Pyrenees, Barcelona and the Med. Further afield, one of our favourite walks is Val de Nuria - take the fenicular railway up and walk down (3 hrs). Montseny's quiet mountain roads and forest tracks make it hugely popular with on and off-road cyclists.
Other Activities: The most beautiful Costa Brava village beaches are an easy day trip 60 to 80 minutes away - Sa Tuna, Calella de Palafrugel, Llafranc, Aigua Blava, Sa Riera, are the best. Just outside Viladrau: Polo (ask in the village when a match is on - viewing is free!) and don't miss the Tree Rope Adventure Park - La Selva d'Aventura. Also Ballooning from Vic.
Golf: The beautiful Montanya Golf Club is 15 mins drive into the mountains, or the world standard, luxury PGA Catalunya 30 minutes away towards Girona.
Ski: Vel Ter 2055m is the nearest resort (60 mins), however La Molina, a 90 minute drive has much a more extensive skiiing and lift system.
