About Lloyd Daniels

Hi, we are a family of six from London. We moved to Catalonia while the children were still small and had a fantastic few years restoring the house, exploring the region and making friends. The local Catalans enjoy the outdoors, good food and a healthy relaxed lifestyle - we loved the place and will probably end up retiring there!

Lloyd Daniels purchased this villa in 2004

Why Lloyd Daniels chose Viladrau

When we discovered it in 2004, despite its near derelict condition, we immediately fell in love with the house and the beautiful mountain village location. A friend in Girona had recommended we look at this house as they liked the idea of sharing drinks on the terrace overlooking the mountains! Two years later, we delivered on the promise. Built around 1900 the house had escaped past fashions of modernisation. It's design and layout are geared towards leisure and entertaining - it was a holiday house for a famous titled publishing family from Barcelona. Now it's a fantastic place for families to relax, have fun and explore the area.

What makes this villa unique

The village of Viladrau is located in Montseny Natural Park, which is a 'secret' gem of Catalonia. It offers a huge variety of unspoilt green waterfall valleys, steep forests of chestnut, pine, beech and oak and high rocky peaks. Top quality Catalalan cuisine can be found in pictureque mountain villages. Viladrau is also an easy drive to Barcelona, Girona, the Pyrenees and the beautiful fishing village beaches of the Costa Brava. Despite being in the centre of the village the house is completely private and really peaceful - and safe!

Great stay, super relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We found the villa very well equipped and perfect for our needs. It was very spacious, with room for all of us to eat and sit together, or hide away in peace. The kids loved the pool and there were plenty of loungers, fresh towels and outdoor seating. We loved the area, there were loads of fantastic mountain walks starting from the village. We would definitely return. The house is right in the village yet very private and secure for our young ones. Barcelona and Costa Brava beautiful beaches were great for days out, though we did need the car. The local restaurants were great especially the Chalet Coromina - very interesting food! and just across the road. We have no hesitation in recommending the villa to others.

A perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from two weeks in Viladrau which is a wonderful village in the heart of Catalonia. The villa is huge and just perfect for a large family or group of friends - there is no worry about being on top of each other in such a large villa. We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and would love to go back again soon. The villa stays cool thought the day and the pool is perfect for cooling off on the very hot days. The villagers were very friendly and helped us with our Catalan, which is very different to Spanish. The local bars and restaurants were most welcoming and a joy to visit. Carmen, the housekeeper was just brilliant and she is a lovely lady.

We really hope to visit again soon.

A beautiful house in a lovely location but....

  • 3 of 5

The house is delightful and Viladrau a friendly and attractive village. However our stay was marred by the fact that the drains stank particularly after the rain which made swimming in the pool unpleasant and sitting by it an impossibility. We couldn't eat at the pool table as the smell was so bad. Also there was only one small working oven - the large one was broken and one of the gas hobs also didn't work which made cooking for twelve a challenge. The smart new barbeque was fine as an alternative when it was sunny but not when it was raining, To be fair the excellent, helpful and friendly housekeeper and gardener did their best to remedy the drain problem digging down to the offending pipe but the smell got worse and permeated the house. This was a real shame as it is a super place to stay with stunning views of the mountains. The landlord is looking into the problem but I would recommend you find out if it is fixed before booking.

Owner's Response: We are so sorry for the problem with the drains. Our staff did everything they could during your stay, but finding the problem was a huge task as it has never happened before. We discovered the cause was nothing to do with the house... the outlet pipe many meters down the valley from the house, was blocked with mud and weeds due to lack of maintenance. Naturally it has now been cleared and all is well. We will keep a close eye on it from now on! Thank you for your patience and please do consider coming back. Kind regards, Lloyd

Fantastic Villa in a Beautiful Village

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this villa in the tiny village of Viladrau. The villa was perfect, very spacious and cool during the June heatwave. It has a lovely pool and garden, with a gas and charcoal BBQ. There were lots of rooms and terraces to find a quiet spot to read. the beds were all extremely comfortable and the bathrooms had large power showers. Lloyd the owner was very helpful throughout the booking process and responded to emails very quickly. If we travel to this region again we wouldn't hesitate to stop here again.

The village was a few minutes walking distance and had various restaurants and bars. There was also a small supermarket, a butchers and bakery.

The area was stunning, on the edge of the national park, ideal for cycling and walking.

The town of Vic is very close by, about half an hour away. This has larger supermarkets including a Lidl. The old town itself is well worth a visit. Girona is about 50 minutes away so ideal if flying into here, or again for a visit.

Lovely restored summer mansion with a lot of charm.

  • 5 of 5

For a big party from ages 6 to 84 plenty of space to explore, plus, enclosed garden and 'home cinema nook' a real bonus. Bedrooms very spacious and comfortable. I slept well and loved a little star gazing on the verandas.

We enjoyed the village (nice bakery and tapas) and surrounding forest and mountains. Some great hikes to suit all ages and lots of help at tourist office. Great food at hotel in next street and very reasonable for good quality.

A real gem of a place and Carmen ( our housekeeper) was extremely helpful. Our host's recommends were well worth following up - from coastal walks to food.

Brilliant home stay.

The villa is located in the centre of a picturesque mountain village, just 2 minutes walk from the main square where there are numerous bars, cafes, restaurants and shops. The village is in Montseny Natural Park, a UNESCO protected World Biosphere Reserve and is just 60 minutes from Barcelona, Costa Brava Mediterranean beaches and the Pyrenees, and also just thirty minutes from Girona Airport (Ryanair, Easyjet). The village has all amenities including cafes, restaurants, bakers, butchers, chemist and general stores. Viladrau village is famous for its healthy air and spring water (it has 111 springs!), this along with its sunny dry days and cool nights, have made it the traditional summer retreat for wealthy Barcelonans and Spanish Royalty. It is ideal for groups seeking the peace and tranquility of an unspoilt mountain nature park and also the enjoyment of Catalan culture and cuisine. Viladrau is a walkers paradise - Montseny is packed with walks and cycle tracks. The peak of Matagals (visible from the terrace!) is a great walk from the house and provides views of the Pyrenees, Barcelona and the Med. Further afield, one of our favourite walks is Val de Nuria - take the fenicular railway up and walk down (3 hrs). Montseny's quiet mountain roads and forest tracks make it hugely popular with on and off-road cyclists.

Other Activities: The most beautiful Costa Brava village beaches are an easy day trip 60 to 80 minutes away - Sa Tuna, Calella de Palafrugel, Llafranc, Aigua Blava, Sa Riera, are the best. Just outside Viladrau: Polo (ask in the village when a match is on - viewing is free!) and don't miss the Tree Rope Adventure Park - La Selva d'Aventura. Also Ballooning from Vic.

Golf: The beautiful Montanya Golf Club is 15 mins drive into the mountains, or the world standard, luxury PGA Catalunya 30 minutes away towards Girona.

Ski: Vel Ter 2055m is the nearest resort (60 mins), however La Molina, a 90 minute drive has much a more extensive skiiing and lift system.
