Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday cottage in Mindrum - Longknowe

Four bedroom Northumbrian cottage, open fires, AGA, big farmhouse kitchen

The Longknowe was a complete ruin when the current owners bought it 20 years ago. After a long association with Northumberland, they knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity because of its location.

They have renovated it completely, effectively building a new house inside the old walls. It is now a comfortable, warm stone cottage in a magnificent Northumbrian setting. It sits on its own in an isolated valley. It makes a wonderful self-catering holiday for summer or winter. It works well as a peaceful retreat for a couple or small family (with a substantial reduction in rental, except in high season) or it was built with the idea of being able to accommodate several generations or 2 families. At all times, however, much or little of the house you book, you have sole occupancy of the site.

Longknowe has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with power showers, a large farmhouse kitchen with an AGA, two small sitting rooms, with folding doors so that it can be made into one room, with open fires. You can rent 2 (Queen sized room with bunks rooms) or 4 bedrooms (plus a double bedroom and a twin room). It also has a modern shepherd's wagon with 2 bunks for summer use. Maximum numbers are 10 in summer (plus babies in cots) and 8 in winter. There is an enclosed paddock that surrounds the house for your use. Longknowe is 7 miles to the nearest shop, 15 miles to the open, sandy beaches of North Northumberland. The Farne Islands are close by. On a clear night the stars shine brilliantly. You can cycle or walk into the hills, on the public footpaths and byways from the front door. We are happy to accept one dog by prior agreement only

The house sits on its own, you do not share the site with anyone else while you are there. The nearest neighbours are about a third of a mile away. The house can be rented in three different ways. You can take all four bedrooms, sleeping up to 8 maximum, and pay the quoted price on the rental rates. You can rent 'half the house', all the public rooms (kitchen and two sitting rooms) plus the queen sized bedroom and the bunk beds, for a substantial reduction at all times, except in high season. No-one else will share the site with you. Lastly in summer, mid-May onwards, you can also rent for an extra £100 per week the Shepherd's Wagon. This is in the backfield. It has two bunks, electricity and is double glazed, but it doesn't have running water, so it is like comfortable camping, and ideal for teenagers. There is also a renovated barn on site, which is not available for use.

About Jo Andrews

We are a family with a long love of Northumberland and a long association with the area which goes back now over five generations.

Jo Andrews purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Jo Andrews chose Northumberland

We bought this house as a complete ruin, roofless, powerless, waterless, only a few walls were half standing. Why? Because we knew we would never get another chance to buy and renovate a house on a site as magnificent as this. The Longknowe sits well within the Northumberland National Park, surrounded on all sides by hills and sheep. There are pictures in the kitchen at the house showing, what it looked like when we bought it. You can see the difference today, effectively we have built a modern, well-insulated house within an old traditional stone shell.

What makes this cottage unique

If you like wild open spaces, fantastic beaches, interesting castles to visit, empty roads, and good local shops staffed by friendly people, then The Longknowe is for you. Curl up in front of the open log fire with a good book, roam the hills, cook on the AGA in a big farmhouse kitchen, birdwatch from the front door, or just sleep well - a few days here is a chance to unwind.

Exactly what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cottage that feels like it is in the middle of nowhere, it was perfect for the three nights me and my friends stayed for. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen is big and very well stocked, and the option to split the living room into two is very useful. The bathrooms are very modern with underfloor heating which we were all impressed with. We also rented the wagon which was comfortable and surprisingly warm.

The property is essentially in the middle of a large field full of cows that would all come and drink from the ford right outside each morning.

The only issue we had was that we could not find the barbeque, but apart from that this cottage was perfect.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this review, it's good to know that you had a great time! The field outside the house has a variety of animals in it during the year. Cows in summer and then often sheep in winter. The barbecue is in the outside storeroom, attached to the house, to the left of the front door.

Fantastic - warm and homely, stunning location

  • 5 of 5

This was ou first stay at Longknowe for 1 week in mid-September. It is a gorgeous property finished to a very high standard with all the creature comforts you could wish for together with rural charm and character. It is beautifully furnished and immediately felt like home from the moment we walked in the door. There are fantastic rural views in all directions and not another house in sight, it is wonderfully remote with only the local wildlife for company and just perfect for a peaceful retreat. Our favourite moments were lighting the open fire each evening, learning to cook on the Aga (if you are worried about this then don't be - it is very easy to use and cooks everything so well, now I want one at home!), watching the stars on a clear night (there is so little light pollution here that you can see the Milky Way) and enjoying the local wildlife. It only takes half an hour or so to reach the coast and there are endless places to visit, a week wasn't nearly enough. There are also local walks starting from the house, we spent a full day taking a scenic walk to the nearest pub in Kirk Yetholm which is actually across the border in Scotland. There are lots of maps of the local area at the house as well as books, games and CD's, you can even play table tennis on the huge kitchen table. Jo was very helpful and provided all of the information that we needed, and was always contactable during our stay had there been any problems. There's nothing negative to say - if you like remote and beautiful countryside and want to get away from it all then don't hesitate, just book it.

a magical place

  • 5 of 5

We were returnees to Longknowe after a fantastic week in 2013. This time we stayed for two weeks and wished it could have been three ( or four!). the house is cleverly arranged to accommodate a family at either end with the marvellous kitchen/ dining room , alongside sitting rooms, providing a focal point for drinking, chatting, cooking and even table tennis.

The owners are friendly, knowledgeable and have seemingly thought of everything to make your stay a pleasant and hassle free one. There is so much to do in the local area and also the coast is not much more than half an hour away.

Wooler us the nearest town and has a great selection of food shops including a great butcher and deli. There is so much history and beauty around Longknowe; fantastic walking which the kids ( aged 3 to 9) loved No TV but wifi and the enclosed garden is a joy. Many games of cricket and hide and seek ( usually in dressing up clothes) were had and we saw stoats in the garden.

This us a very special place and many thanks to Jo and Paul for making it so

A beautiful location, first class accommodation.

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year at Longknowe. The cottage is set in a beautiful location and the instructions from Jo make it easy to find. My friends and I, once again, found the property clean and very well maintained. The facilities in the cottage are first class, especially the log fire, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. I would recommend Longknowe to friends and family. Walking in the surrounding hills is a must and Wooler is not too far away should you need anything. We're all looking forward to our next visit to Longknowe.

A truly wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from our Longknowe 'fix' after a year lapsed and was so thankful to return. If you need a get away from it all holiday, in a delightful house, owned by very thoughtful people Longknowe is for you. Expect to travel for eating out and supplies unless you take all with you to enjoy the complete solitude this amazing place offers. We have stayed at Longknowe for some years and this last trip was to introduce our Grandchildren to the joy that is Longknowe - Matilda (2 & 1/2) did not want to go home, nor did we!

Autumn chill

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at the Longknowe again and it was fantastic! The weather quite different from last time, in very early spring (every day the weather and the light differs) You never get bored in this wonderful secluded country cottage. We have been baking scones, pies, bread (which did not succeed very well though) and other great meals in this superb country kitchen. The log fire provided a lot of cosy warmth during the chilly autumn nights.

Unfortunately the fox had feasted on the chicken last year, so this time we were not able to endeavour the tasty eggs from neighbouring farmers wife Tessa. We had to do with the supermarkets eggs. The local butcher Johnson provided us with the best lamb stew we have ever had, I wish I had products like this in my home town. We love to come again Jo! Best regards, Robert, Marja, Sytse, Emma, Hans, Elly and border collie Flora.

Owner's Response: Dear Robert, Marja and family, especially Flora, its a pleasure to have you all and thank you for taking the trouble to write this review. Eggs can be had at the end of the road, including goose eggs, duck eggs, guinea fowl eggs, and hens eggs of all colours and sizes from Joan on the left as you go down the hill into Kilham. Next time you come ask her! We look forward to having you back when you are able to come. I am at the house at the moment, its freezing outside, the fire is stoked up and the stars are shining brightly. I am getting the sledges ready for Christmas!

The Longknowe is a warm and comfortable renovated stone cottage sitting in the Northumberland National Park - one of the last great wilderness areas of England. It is close to a number of trails, including the Pennine Way and St Cuthbert's Way. 3 major iron age hill forts are nearby. The valley itself is home to curlew, swallows, otters, badgers, hares and deer. It is about 3 miles from Flodden Field, and its eco-museum, about 15 miles from the coast with Lindisfarne, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castles within easy reach. It is around 40 minutes from Alnwick Garden and Castle. Hadrians Wall is around 50 miles away and Edinburgh can be reached in under two hours, or in 40 minutes by train from Berwick. The nearest country towns are Wooler and Coldstream, both have good shops with local produce. In the immediate area there is gliding at Milfield and horse riding for all levels. There is a steam railway nearby and a working mill. But most of all Longknowe is a place to enjoy open space and tranquillity, whatever the season.
