In a quiet close with an interesting, sunny , southwest facing outlook, this apartment suited my wife and I (with a son and friend who were doing the Marathon) perfectly over a very long weekend - would that it had been longer!

The accommodation was in superb order, was light, bright and airy but was cosy and warm when the weather deteriorated seriously for a short spell. The little balcony was very cosy too, but very welcome. At no time was any noise noticeable from the rest of the building.

The whole was comprehensively and thoughtfully equipped for 4/5, right down to the computer with high speed internet connection.

We have no complaints at all but when let to 2 couples, for which it is ideal, two sets of keys would be useful (we only had one). Some 70 (easy) stairs and no lift, ensure that your stay will provide you with some valuable exercise as an added bonus!

Owner's Response: We have a limited number of sets of keys at present owing to the security nature of one of the locks. However if two sets of keys are requested at the time of booking then we will try and arrange for a spare set to be available for your stay.

A great 'base' to explore Berlin

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week, combining 'business' and 'pleasure'. It's a very functional flat, conveniently divided - with two spacious bedrooms, a bathroom (with a bathtub) a living room with a very well equipped kitchen. In fact, the whole flat is very well furnished and equipped. A light bulb is out? You'll surely find a spare one, or half a dozen. Forgot your hairdryer? No worries, there is one. Need to wash stuff? A washing machine (and possibly some detergent). Coffee? Two kinds of machines and coffee in the cupboard. You really feel like you're staying at a place a friend allows you to use while (s)he is not in Berlin. The place was clean and the keys pickup and checkout very well organized.

But the strongest point is the location. Close to everywhere and perfectly commuted. Nollendorfplatz might not be world-famous (unless you are into LGTB issues, then you will know that it's been the center of 'Berlin Pride' for decades - but unless you know that you might not even notice, because the atmosphere is very low key), but it is a major transport hub and it happens to be just around the corner. U-Bahn from there will take you almost anywhere in Berlin, and for the other places you have busses. The area itself is rather calm - neither particularly hip nor exoticly immigrant nor stiff bourgeois. Just your ordinary Berlin 'Kiez'. But walk to the right (for a mile or so) and you will get to the legendary Kreuzberg. Turn left, and you will get to the West Berlin Zoo, the KaDeWe and the posh Kurfurstendamm (Ku'dam) shopping street. Go straight (almost) and you will get to Tiergarten and the entire historic Downtown Berlin (Mitte). It doesn't get better than this.

The only thing you need to take into account is the last flight of stairs - getting to the second floor is a smooth ascent, but the stairs from second to third floor are a climb (and narrow). We kept our stroller downstairs (perfectly safe), but carrying luggage upstairs was workout. Then again - if my 77-year-old grandmother managed to climb upstairs to visit us when we were there, so can you.

Great apartment.Comfy beds

  • 5 of 5

I have just spent 4 nights at the flat with my partner and our 2 teenage children (17& 14). We used it as a base for a 3 day sightseeing trip to Berlin We found the flat to be perfect for our needs and much cheaper than booking 2 hotel rooms for 4 nights

Well situated in a residential area, it is approximately 4-5 minutes walk to the underground and Berlins excellent transport system. We found the area to be quiet but not dead. In the mornings it was just people going about their daily business of going to work, school and walking the dog. Night time is certainly a bit more lively with some more interesting characters about but at no time did we feel unsafe and I would have had no worries going out alone. There is a 24 hour supermarket near the underground which was very useful.

The apartment was great. We found it clean and tidy with everything you could need. The beds were huge and very comfortable. Just wonderful for collapsing into after long days on your feet pounding the streets of Berlin! The kids shared happily with no squabbling. They both agreed it felt like sleeping in 2 singles. The kitchen was very well equipped having everything you could need (though couldn't see the microwave). There was plenty of instant hot water and the shower was good (though it gets a little hot if someone turns on a tap or flushes the toilet whilst you are in it!) The bathroom door doesn't fully shut because of the washing machine so the shower can be a little public but if you hang a towel over the rail it makes a pretty good screen.

As previously mentioned the sofa in the living area is only big enough for 3 people to relax on however there were a couple of comfy chairs in the bedroom so we brought one through and though a little squashed it meant we could all sit comfortably together. The wifi worked well.

The owner Toby was very helpful and friendly responding very quickly to requests and queries. Our flight came in quite late and it was 11pm before we got to the flat but he kindly accommodated this for us, arranging for someone meet us. His website provides useful information about travel, the area and things to do.

Berlin is an amazing city especially if you like History. There is so much to see and do and in 3 days we barely tickled, let alone scratched, the surface. There is just so much to see and do though I can recommend a walking tour as a great introduction to the city if you've never been before.

Nice place, but lot's of stairs!

  • 3 of 5

Be prepared to climb 4 flights of stairs. You need to be in good shape to stay here. The Apartment was nice when we arrived, but the floor was dirty and needed to be swept. Also, there was a musty smell on the sheets in the bedroom. We had to wash the sheet when we arrived which help improve the smell in the bedroom.

The kitchen was well stocked with spices and while small it was good for fixing breakfast in the morning. One thing that is not really shown in the photos, is the couch can only seat 3 people. The couch is really small and there is not really enough room for 4 people to all sit comfortably in the living area.

The area is a little questionable at night, so make sure you walk with a group. Their is good access to the Metro subway system which makes it good for getting around.

Owner's Response: The apartment is on the third floor, so their are three flights of stairs, this is made clear to all prospective guests in our guide and in addition we specifically point it out to any potential guest who may be very elderly or infirm. We would also like to point out that most buildings in Berlin do not have lifts because of their age and the majority are 6 or 7 stories high, therefore three flights of stairs is the average you might expect when visiting Berlin. We have never had a comment about the area being unsafe before and it is certainly not our experience as we regularly stay in the area. The building itself is mainly occupied by retired people who have no problems with the area. Also the area is the home of some of Berlin's best hotels and restaurants and also many Foreign Embassies. Regarding the cleaning of the apartment on this occasion the cleaner says she was rushed due to the fact that we allowed the guest to check in very early to suit their flight arrival. The previous guests had checked out the same day hence she had insufficient time. In response to the guests complaint we immediately volunteered the cleaner to go back to the apartment to complete her work.

Perfect Berlin City Break Apartment

  • 5 of 5

This apartment proved to the perfect base for our 9 days in Berlin. We felt safe, secure and relaxed throughout. The proximity of the flat to shops, restaurants and the underground system was ideal. Also, its location is near enough for easy walking to many city sights. The apartment itself is spacious, very clean, bright, quiet and very comfortable. Everything you'd need is provided - with some unexpected extras thoughtfully included. During our stay, the weather was hot, so the little balcony and the provision of fans in the bedrooms were much appreciated. The owner was meticulous in his contacts with us and he provided a lot of excellent information which informed our visit. Attractions were too numerous to mention: Berlin is huge and fascinating. We'd include these, however, on an itinerary: the Story of Berlin, the zoo and aquarium, the Sony Centre, the Tiergarten, a R. Spree boat-trip, the Brucke Museum, Potsdam, the Pergamon Museum, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, the Reichstag (dome), KaDeWe, Hackescher Markt, the Holocaust Memorial, Topography of Terrors... the list is endless: we hope to return. We'd especially praise the transport network: with various kinds of (zoned) tickets available, once you've authenticated your ticket (and you mustn't forget) at the start of its period's use, you simply walk onto platforms: no barriers, no rushing, no crushing - wonderful. Paris and London might learn a thing or two. (And imagine: people carrying bikes onto the underground... Berlin's provision for cycling is genuine.) We walked, too, however, and we used buses, and that way, you see so much more. We ate twice in 'Il Valentino', across from the apartment. It is a delightful restaurant - the staff, kind and considerate; the food, excellent. We were also mightily impressed by the quality and cheapness of 'take-away' food: all the little outlets in the stations are of high quality, as are the stalls in places like Alexanderplatz: try a currywurst from a 'walking grill'. Everywhere we went in the city, we found the Berliners helpful and friendly. One hot lunchtime, we were sitting in the Tiergarten when a smartly-dressed young woman appeared with a tray of tumblers of iced water and simply gave them to us without explanation. As I have said, we'd love to go back (soon) to Berlin, and we'd definitely choose this apartment again. - It couldn't be bettered.
