Our 4 bedroom ground floor apartment is located at the residential west end of Alhaurin el Grande,a bustling Andalucian town of 20,000 'Alhaurinos'.The town is only 25 minutes by car from both Malaga airport and the Costa del sol coastline.Just inland of the town is the Sierra de Nieves a national park,very popular for walking,and hiking .The town has upwards of 40 restaurants,many cooking authentic local produce. The town boasts many sports facilities including a year round covered swimming pool, tennis courts, football pitches and basketball. The town is only 10 Km away from the pretty town of Mijas which also has the nicest outdoor swimming pool and restaurant in the area.The apartment has 2 terraces, one covered by vines in the summer months and one above in the sun. Both have stunning views over an orange grove to the sierra beyond. In the summer months the lower terrace is the scent of jasmine plants.The local town'feria' is over 5 days and the last weekend in May

Location: Alhaurin el Grande is 25 minutes drive from Malaga airport near the Sierra de Nieves National Park. The ground floor apartment is situated in a residential area of the town. At our end of town we have a village within a town right on our doorstep.There are a small selection of shops , two mini markets a fish shop, a bakery, a video library and a good restaurant with tapas bar and formal restaurant within two minutes walk. The busy area of town which has a large variety of shops, tapas bars and restaurants is approx 900metres from the apartment. Beyond that is the new covered municipal swimming pool and tennis courts. There are several taxi companies in the town and parking is always available at, or very close to the apartment. We can e-mail you a detailed restaurant guide, listing some of our favorite restaurants in the town

Local Attractions: The coast is roughly a 25 minute drive from the apartment. The pretty tourist village of Mijas is 10 km away and also contains a superb public outdoor pool. The cultural cities of Ronda, Granada and Antequera are within easy reach by car. There are golf courses (Lauro Golf and Alhaurin Golf) at either end of the town. Mijas Golf is 20 minutes away by car. The area is very popular with walkers as there are a number of National Parks within a short drive. The lakes at Ardales Park are well worth a visit as is the Chorro Gorge and the Limestone ridge at Torcal. In keeping with all Andalusian towns there are many festivals and fiestas (highlights being the annual town festival 'feria' at the end of May and the Easter week 'Semana Santa'). There are jazz and flamenco festivals on during the month of June.The town boasts over 20 restaurants many of them serving fresh fish and shellfish from nearby Malaga (our personal favourite is restaurant Sardina, a fifteen minute walk from the flat.).

Facilities:As we realise how popular it is, we have fitted wi fi to the apartment. We have negotiated a rate of 35 Euros, single,with a reputable local taxi company from and to Malaga airport for a maximum of 4 people with luggage.This reputable firm have an e-mail address and therefore we can book your taxi in advance. The apartment has two terraces overlooking an orange grove. The lower one has vines over the canopy above,a lemon tree, bouganvilia and two wonderful scented jasmine plants. We have a barbecue unit and JVC stereo system. The living room has a 21' television with combined DVD and VCR below.We have an automatic washing machine and combined microwave/ grill. At the end of our street is a shop which, at the weekend ,sells spit roasted herb filled chickens.The area enjoys a fantastic 320 days of sunshine a year but in the unlikely event of colder weather, we have just introduced a Hi-fi lounge off the lower terrace with a real wood fire. This is a lovely room to relax in. In the evening, pick a lemon from our lemon tree to add to your g+t or cocktail as you sit on our vine covered terrace enjoying the finca and mountain views.The two terraces are a very tranquil place to be in the evening when the scent of the jasmine is at its height. Alternatively, as the heat of the day receeds, go to our local tennis courts and enjoy a game of tennis or a swim in the adjacent covered pool. By popular demand we have installed a Samsung wall mounted air conditioning unit in the lounge

About Mr and Mrs Watson

We bought our apartment back in 2002. I have a cousin who has lived most of her life in Spain and since visiting her twenty years ago in Madrid, my wife and I have fallen in love with the country and its people. Forget the stereotypes about the Costas, Spain is a huge and very diverse melting pot of scenery, food, culture and great people. Visit the great Andalucian classic cities and head inland for some stunning scenery,great value and an unforgettable time!

The draw of a real working Andalucian town was always a big attraction for us. Character and charisma, amenities, somewhere not overun with tourists and reasonable proximity to a major airport were all factors for us.The town has a population of over 24,000 people and over 50 good eateries and a festival or fiesta practically every other weekend

What makes this apartment unique

Alhaurin has avoided the commercialism of the costas and retains a lovely Spanish atmosphere. The town is roughly equidistant between the three Spanish classic cities of Granada, Cordoba and Seville which all have fabulous personality history and charm. The town boasts good restaurants, tennis courts , swimming pools and plenty of shops. You are never stuck for things to do. In the evening it is nice to kick back and look at the unadulterated views out over the orange grove to the Sierra beyond. We have planted jasmine on the lower of the two terraces and the scent is wonderful!

Spacious, clean and comfortable flat with all amenities. Lovely terraces to sunbath and sip your evening G&Ts- even the fresh lemons are on hand!

Out of 30days we had 22 of sunshine - can't be bad for March . Excellent location to experience REAL Spain.Local transport is very reliable,punctual and cheap giving access to surrounding towns and villages.While car hire gives excellent easy access to major roads allowing travel further afield to Granada and Gibralter Local bars and restaurants are extremely friendly with great food and atmosphere. Sorry to leave before the Santa Semana celebrations but always leave a reason to return !

Great return visit!

Just to say what another wonderful break we girls had at the end of May 2016. The apartment was comfortable and ideally suited for exploring the village and surrounding area. We took your advice and tried the new tapas bar....absolutely wonderful food! And the Gin tonic was rather good too! 😊...We enjoyed going to some of our favourites from last year too.

The lovely Juan picked us up and laid as down as and when required and was a good source of information. We had a great time at the festival with all the dancing and music in the street, great tapas and margaritas..the funfair and fireworks display on the last night was amazing and we had a great view from the top terrace of your apartment.

As always it was a joy to visit and we would love to go back. Thanks again Pete and Karen.

Great views and good restaurants

We used the “Orange Grove View” as a base for a 4 man golfing holiday in June. The apartment had everything we needed for the perfect getaway.

• Excellent rural location in Alhaurin el Grande away from the main tourist areas at the coast.

• Spacious public rooms and terraces with views on which pre-dinner drinks were enjoyed.

• Close proximity to some fantastic restaurants which offered exceptional quality and value as well as a warm welcome and friendly service. We visited the restaurants recommended by Peter and were not disappointed.

• Close proximity to the Alhaurin Golf Club which provides a spectacular setting and thoroughly deserves its “must play” status.

• We used Juan, a local taxi driver recommended by Peter. Juan was reliable and prompt (by Spanish standards) and provided an excellent friendly service as well as up to date advice on any bars and restaurants that should be avoided!

• The apartment provided a haven of tranquillity; situated in a side street away from the main road and free from spouses.

• The only downside was that there was no sports psychologist on hand to deal with the issues that 3 members of the party encountered during each day’s play.

An excellent break, thoroughly enjoyed by all and thanks to Peter for all the recommendations.

Lovely break and festival

Just wanted to thank you both for introducing us to your secret Spain! What a wonderful time we had!!

The views from the balcony were wonderful, overlooking the orchards towards the mountains and the apartment had everything we could wish for. It was great to work through your recommendations on what to eat at the different restaurants.....we like a challenge! The food was excellent and very reasonable and there so many to chose from...I feel we need to go back to try the ones we missed! :)

Alharien is ideally placed for visits to Mijas and Malaga, although we were perfectly happy wandering around the village. Please pass on our thanks to the lovely Juan, who was very friendly, helpful and reliable......we will certainly be back!.....Thank you both for your help and advice....and for giving us a taste of the 'real' Spain....

Alhourin property review

Very nice property with sufficient space for 6 adults and a child. The restaurants recommended by the owner were within walking distance and excellent. Wifi would have been nice but not necessary. We had a car and parking was not a problem.

The real Spain!

Yes, you can still find the real Spain and its right here in this lovely apartment in Alhaurin el Grande.

The apartment is as described and is very clean and comfortable. There were only two of us but all bedrooms were spacious and well laid out with plenty of room on the patio for eating out,

We organised to be picked up at Malaga airport by taxi and were met by the delightful Juan who was available 24/7. Definitely recommended as he had excellent local knowledge.

Not that we used him much as the apartment is excellently situated in the old part of the town with a great restaurant within 200 meters open from dawn till dusk !

The main town is within easy walking distance where we found lots of very cheap bars and excellent value for money restaurants. The town has a lively Spanish feeling to it and the locals were very friendly and helpful.

Will definitely return with a few friends.

The town is 25 minutes away from both Malaga airport and the coast.The seaside resort of Marbella and its beach, is 30 minutes away by car. The beautiful Sierra de Nieves national park lies immediately to the north west of the town.This area attracts a lot of walkers and hikers. A good bus service runs from the town to Malaga. The pretty whitewashed town of Mijas is a tourist Mecca and lies only 10 Km away.Another tourist draw is the inland town of Ronda which is a 2 hour drive by car.The second closest airport is Granada, less than two hours away.The fabulous Alhambra palace in Granada can be visited for a day trip,as can the ski slopes above Granada at Sol y Nieve.Alhaurin is a traditional Spanish town and is flanked by two excellent golf courses, Alhaurin golf www.alhauringolf.com and Lauro golf, www.laurogolf.com. Being equidistant between these two attractions, the apartment provides good accomodation and easy access to both. We have an orange grove or ' finca ' in front of us

Other Activities: Flamenco School

Golf: At the west end of town, we have Alhaurin Golf ,a Balasteros designed course and at the east end of town, we have Lauro golf, a flatter links course. Both courses are within 4 miles of the apartment. A twenty minute drive away lies Mijas Golf another well known course. The Costa del Sol is peppered with first class golf facilities

Ski: Sol y nieve is the local ski resort, towering above Granada, it is a 2 and a half hour drive from the apartment. We have used it on several occasions. On a clear day it is possible to see Africa from the top. It is also one of the few resorts in the world where you truly can ski in the morning and drive down to the coast and swim in the afternoon! Watch the restaurants at the resort prepare giant outdoor paellas on good days!

  • The master bedroom in the apartment has a king sized double bed and 3 fitted double wardrobes. The centre pair are kept locked for our own equipment.The ones on either side are available for use We have just fitted a wall mounted "Samsung" air conditioning unit to the master bedroom .Sheets towels and pillowcases are provided. Each bedroom has a cold air oscillating fan in it. We have now introduced a 'winter lounge' with a hi-fi and a sofa bed in it. This room also has a real fire and is ideal for relaxing with some music and a nice glass of tempranillo!

Two terraces, one of which is shaded by vines, the other is exposed to the sun. Both have beautiful views overlooking an Orange Grove. A small barbecue grill is provided. The apartment is able to receive both the 'Amena' and 'Orange' and 'Movistar' mobile telephone signals amongst others.The nearest internet cafe is only 800 metres away. Parking immediately outside the apartment is always possible as we are on a quiet residential street.
