The Historic Balch Retreat on Hood Canal is our dream home where we will ultimately retire. We love sharing the home, wildlife beach, and Olympic National Park with friends and family, and want our guests to feel as if they are staying in a well-appointed, historic holiday home of a good friend. We hope you will experience the many wonders that we have.
Tori and Wade purchased this house in 2007
We chose this property after nearly a decade long search for a historic waterfront home, with placement near old growth forest where considerable wildlife abounds, preferably on Hood Canal near great restaurants! Our long wait was well rewarded. We hope you'll adore this photographer's playground as much as we do.
The only authenticated, historic, waterfront holiday rental on Puget Sound fronting the crystal clear waters of Hood Canal on the widest expanse of the longest fjord in North America. Thrill to some of the most hypnotic and romantic moonlit views you may ever encounter. Evolving views ever changing include Mt Rainier + one of the rare places in the world with Trident subs to observe, with shell laden beach on a wildlife estuary.
Looking for your “typical” vacation rental on the Hood Canal, the Historic Balch Retreat is not it.
If you want to feel as though your best friends have lent you their personal water front residence, complete with warm furnishings, antiques, a well-equipped kitchen, and comfortable beds, then you have come to the right place.
From the moment you step through the front door you feel as though you have stepped back in time to the days when life on the Hood Canal was simpler and more relaxed. The charm of this 1920’s waterfront home is carried throughout in even the smallest of details.
This home is all about relaxation and detaching yourself from the stress of everyday life. Unplug and curl up with a good book. Marvel at the abundance of wildlife right outside your back door. Seals, sea lions, Eagles, and varieties of sea birds too numerous to list. Even the occasional raccoon family scampering through the yard.
To get more up close & personal with nature, hop in the canoe and take a leisurely trip along the banks. If you're lucky you will have plenty of curious seals to escort you. After canoeing, take a walk along the banks and look for shells. Don’t forget your camera!
After sunset, light a fire in the fire pit and make s’mores. Your kids will remember this far longer than what was on the TV that night.
A few recommendations to make your stay a memorable experience.
• Take your groceries. The local store is not well stocked. It is okay if you run out of milk, but beyond that, the nearest store is 23 miles away.
• This is the Pacific Northwest. If you want sandy beaches, go to California.
• Despite what yo may think, the owners cannot arrange for elk or deer, or other wild animals to parade past your door as you eat your breakfast. They are wild and come and go as they please.
• While the house does sleep 9, 6 might be more comfortable. The dining table seats 6. The living room also seats 6, comfortably, with possibly room for two more for short periods. Don't overcrowd the place, especially in the winter months, too many people could impact your relaxation time.
We actually had the pleasure of meeting Tori & Wade and we can tell you that you won't meet two nicer people who truly care about their guests.
In nearly every way the Historic Balch Retreat exceeded our expectations.
Do not pass up the Historic Balch Retreat. Just please save us a long weekend here and there. We will return.
We were so encouraged by the passionate and descriptive reviews that we changed our plans to spend six nights at this property. We cannot say enough kind things about the owners and the property. The house itself is a gem, and it was very clean and set up like a welcoming home. The location is most impressive - right on the Hood Canal where you can watch a the local eagles take advantage of the tides and the nearby river outlet. There is nothing like relaxing on the deck for coffee (morning) or wine (evening) while observing nature in its full glory - very soothing for the soul. The owners were prompt, courteous, helpful, and friendly when contacted but did not otherwise interfere. Of course, there is a lot to do on the Olympic Peninsula, and the owners provided some great information to get us started. And don’t forget the nearby Halfway House - it ended up being a favorite of ours. The homemade pie/cobbler and ice cream were great (and inexpensive), and the Sunday night chicken and dumplings were to die for. Of all the VRBO places we have rented, this is our new favorite. We hope some day to return to this place for some more northwest comfort.
This home was everything I expected. The view out the back is gorgeous. Very relaxing to sit and watch the wildlife in the title flats. The bald eagle was out every evening along with the seals and elk. We used the fire pit every night. The outside grounds are well kept.
Inside is also very well kept. Very clean and tidy. Tall ceilings. You will like this place.
A beautiful historic home with a jaw-dropping view of the sound! Our party included 4 adults, a 4 year old girl and a 2 year old boy. There was an immaculate yard for the kids to play plus when tide was low there was all kinds of adventures to explore for all. The part of our stay that I enjoyed most was the time I had to relax on the porch outside the living room. My eyes were sore from staring through binoculars for hours at the seals, river otters and especially the bald eagles! We even saw elk one morning. The home was located centrally so that we took day trips (south and north) to different parts of the national forest for daily hikes to waterfalls, along lakes, or just to hike and enjoy the scenery. We rented this home the last week of July and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful weather, local eateries but mostly the scenery. It was a wonderful time for us to leave Texas and Oklahoma.
We drove up to Brinnon from California so needless to say it was a long drive, but it was well worth it. We very much enjoyed Tori and Wade's historic home. We went up with 3 of our children and nephew (ages ranged from 17-23). They each found the home relaxing and serene yet there was plenty to do activity wise as well. You could walk right down to the water, use the canoe that is provided or sit on the deck and watch the wildlife all day if you wanted. We did a lot of hiking to the nearby waterfalls and made a full day out of driving over and spending the day in the beautiful Hoh rain forest and up to Hurricane Ridge. Port Townsend was also a great place to spend the day. These were a few of things we did. Truly a pleasure to stay there and would recommend it to others.
Great location and home well set up to enjoy. Good amalgamation of old and new to maintain atmosphere. Only criticism was that 2 friends joined us late in organization of vacation and the cost of accommodating them was exorbitant relative to cost if we had booked them in when booking
