Built in 1844 by Phineas Parkhurst Quimby one of few Belfast homes still boasting original woodwork & fixtures. Fully furnished with contemporary art, a new eat-in kitchen make upstairs family rooms into the perfect home away from home. Now a 3 room apt. with private entrance and foyer, eat-in kitchen, full bath with oak cabinetry and original marble sink. The large airy separate bedroom has a new Queen bed, ample storage. Though listed as a one bedroom, there is a queen futon in the living room and by closing the curtained French doors between kitchen and living room provide a second private sleeping area.
After two stays at this apartment, this has become our "home" away from home. The owner has been very respectful of our privacy, yet checks in with us to be sure we have everything we need. An art-filled apartment with a lovely location.
We spent a very pleasant week in this second floor apartment that felt like an art museum. The art, by Harold Garde, on display in the entryway and throughout the apartment made this a unique experience. The apartment overall had everything we needed - we even cooked all of our meals there. The house has original woodwork and other original details. It is in a lovely part of the town of Belfast, and within walking distance of downtown.
The owner could not have been more respectful of our privacy.
The stairs to the apartment do require that you are able to go up and down them with ease - we are retirees, but we had no problem navigating them. They would only be a problem if you have mobility issues that make stairs difficult, especially as it is an impressive, curving staircase.
We very much enjoyed our week in the apartment and would definitely stay there again!
This apartment is truly an art-filled, historic gem. It's situated in a lovely residential neighborhood in Belfast - a short walk to the center of town and the Penobscot Bay waterfront. The apartment is quite clean, artfully decorated and very comfortable. As an added bonus, the walls are adorned with the work of American Abstract Expressionist painter, Harold Garde. There is a private entrance one flight up a gorgeous stairway and ample parking in front of the house. The kitchen is well equipped and fun to work in - it even has a small dishwasher and Ninja blender! The bathroom is off the kitchen providing additional privacy. Wi-Fi service was excellent. Elissa, the hostess, is very gracious and attentive to the needs of her guests, but also mindful of their privacy. I've traveled all over the world and felt immediately at home in this beautiful setting. I would love to return any time of year. I highly recommend it.
Spacious and walking distance to downtown. Could've been a little cleaner but overall a nice little getaway.
Issues: 1) Contacted the owner via email and by phone (no answer, message left on voicemail) more than 24 hours in advance of our arrival for information/instructions to access the property. No owner contact prior to arrival at the property (after returning home several days later, we had received voicemail messages from owner after the posted check-in time. 1st message at 4:09, and 2nd message at 4:29 the day of arrival). Arrived at the property at 3:30 pm, 30 minutes after posted check-in time. Fortunately owner lives at the property, which we found out after knocking at a door located to the rear of the VBRO property. We were told the property was not ready, given the entry code, and asked to return 1 to 1.5 hours later - bed linen had not yet been washed. We were told the property owner recently had back surgery.
2) After accessing the property long after the posted check-in time, the property had not been cleaned - floors and carpets needed vacuuming, the tub and bathroom sink were dirty and needed cleaning. Used soap and hair in the tub and sink. Found cleaning products under the bathroom sink and had to clean the tub/shower and bathroom sink before use.
3) General maintenance lacking - a number of lights were either missing bulbs, had inoperable bulbs, or lights did not work (i.e. one light above the bed failed to work, and when the pull chain was pulled the light fixture spun upside down, while the second light no longer had a pull chain).
4) Windows/Air - almost all windows were covered on the exterior with plastic window covering, designed for insulation purposes and usually used for the winter months. This prevented cooling the property, as there is no air conditioning.
Other - only compliments I can provide is that if you enjoy Harold Garde abstract impressionistic artwork, the property has a great number on display, and the location is ideal for accessing downtown Belfast.
We really enjoyed our three nights in this apartment. It is warm, clean, and attractive. The owner was only a text away, and very responsive. We'll certainly stay here again.
And Belfast is one of the cutest towns we've visited. Be sure to visit the food co-op and many great restaurants! We also climbed Bald Rock Mountain in Camden Hills State Park and were rewarded with a spectacular view of the bay.
