Casa Big Sur is your own private paradise located near Dominical in the Southern Zone of Costa Rica on the Pacific Ocean. This 9,000 square foot home (including covered patios and decks) is a one-of-a-kind tropical masterpiece, designed so every room enjoys the impressive ocean and rainforest views, including over 60 miles of coastline, the Cano and Three Sister Islands, the Whale’s Tail National Marine Park, and winding rivers with whitewater and undulating mountains that stretch as far as the eye can see. All of this without another home or structure in sight.
Designed and built with native hardwoods, exposed beams, natural stone, and local tile work, this stunning home offers an extraordinary indoor/outdoor living experience with a central great room that boasts 30-foot ceilings, spacious balcony to enjoy with family and friends, fully equipped gourmet kitchen, and outdoor living room with wet bar that extends to the pool deck. Relax in the large infinity pool or oversized hot tub to enjoy the magnificent views while watching nature move all around you!
The home resides on 9 acres in a gated, private enclave providing total privacy and security. Well-structured walking trails give you access to the estate, including a seasonal river, and will enable you and your guests to enjoy this vibrant nature corridor which includes several kinds of monkeys, sloths, toucans, a broad range of birds, along with primary trees hundreds of years old, tropical plants and fruit trees only found in Costa Rica. It’s only a short walk to a local restaurant featuring delicious burgers and the best wings in the area.
Within 10 minutes you will find world class beaches and ample amenities, including grocery stores, restaurants, shops and bank. The advantage of staying in the Southern Zone, beyond its natural beauty, is the broad spectrum of activities it affords. Whether its diving into a waterfall, horseback riding, ATV riding, rappelling, hiking, canoeing, fishing, or zip-lining, there are no doubt more things to do than you will have days. This is the ideal home base for nature lovers and adrenaline seekers alike.
Moving to Costa Rica in 2003. I partnered with Matt Hayden which invested in land in Playa Junquillal, Guanacaste, where we built Tierra Pacifica (www.tierrapacifica.com). The 76-lot, 220 acre development is complete with amenities, including club house, pools, tennis courts, and recreation center. We built the community Doug Stern and Will Rapp the bed and breakfast, Club Arbol, and several other custom homes which compliment the community.
We decided to explore Costa Rica. We ventured further south, and the fauna became greener and more tropical. When we arrived in the Southern Pacific Zone, we realized it was the ‘cream of the crop,’ a true paradise. Hayden, Geoff Nolan and I invested in properties in Uvita, where they built Tierra Verde (www.tierraverdeuvita.com), after three lots in Big Sur, Escaleras de Dominical, where just completed our first masterpiece Casa Big Sur (www.casabigsur.com).
I'm immersed in Costa Rican life, polished Spanish language skills, hired crews, learned the local business procedures, adapted to a more relaxed pace, surfed the local breaks, made friends. I fell in love with a Tica Sidia, and married her and adopted a daughter, becoming more part of the local scene. During the last few years, I've built excellent relationships with ticos and the many ex pats which occupy Costa Rica.
Ben Morris purchased this estate in 2010
The views are so good and we knew this property would never come back around. The southern zone has lots of amazing views however the pipeline of the coast we have is special and no one can say they have the same as Casa Big Sur!
Weather in our area is always changing so it's so nice to be able to seat a relax anywhere in the house and see moving clouds, rainbows, lightening storms, rains and all the sun anyone needs to feel good.
We took a trip to Costa Rica in August 2014 and stayed at Casa Big Sur. The house is 5 STAR all the way! Before we got there Ben (the house manager) helped us with all the details additionally he had the house stocked with groceries. We also hired Roger the chef! He was great (ask for his nacho's for lunch they were delicious). The house was absolutely beautiful and nicely decorated. Both the upstairs and downstairs patio are a perfect place to relax and enjoy the breathtaking views of the ocean. The view is just incredible and jaw dropping you can't believe it's real. You can see the Whale’s Tail, and all the way to Cano Island on a clear day. Surrounded by jungle on all sides, you feel one with nature. The beds were very comfortable that everyone slept great waking to the sounds of howler monkeys in the morning was just so cool. The house has 5 bedrooms that allow everyone privacy with their own room. The 2 master suites each have their own private balconies and master spas. Now let's talk about the infinity pool; this might have been my favorite part, the pool area was gigantic, better than the photos. Nothing better than swimming in the pool and seeing toucans, and macaws fly by. (They also had plenty of inflatable rafts and toys but we brought our own footballs to throw around). Also going in hot tub at night to look at the stars was a nice way to end the day. The house is not too far of a drive to some great beaches and restaurant's (We enjoyed Bar Jolly Roger which you can walk to). We will definitely be back!
The house and surrounding grounds were absolutely gorgeous. Ben and his house keepers, made our trip very relaxing at all times. All of the past reviews that I read, "Ditto" on everything they said. We took pictures that look just like the VRBO pics. Yes, Toucans, monkeys, and all types of birds fly over your head while relaxing in that beautiful infinity edge pool. The best experience was our friend, Roger the Chef. I have eaten at some of the top restaurants around the world, and Roger's cooking skills are top notch. Writing this review, makes me want to book another trip before the summer is over. Thanks for helping our family make such awesome memories. Adam
This was our second trip to Costa Rica. We took all of our children and family this time, 9 of us. We looked up Casa Big Sur and was very interested in this home for all of us to stay together, instead of a hotel and WOW was I ever correct. From the directions from San Jose to the home (very precise) , was for sure one of the best vacations ever. The views from Casa Big Sur are spectacular all hours of the day. We saw all kinds of wildlife and birds, even a Sloth within 5 feet of us with the help of Bandy and Yendri, the caretakers of the property. These two people were never hardly seen except when we needed assistance and then they were they within minutes.Jolly Roger restaurant next door is a must, had the best wings I have ever eaten ANYWHERE. Grocery stores and activities all very close about 10-15 minute drive. The home in laid out very nicely so all the bedrooms have all the privacy anyone could possibly need. Kitchen fully stocked with all needed to cook anything. Ben the home owner came by to see that all was well and is a very pleasant man. We will absolutely return here for many times to come.Thank you for having such a gem for us to come to. Until next time

Well, just getting to Casa La Big Sur from Juan Santamaría International Airport, Costa Rica, San Jose was a GREAT start! The best, quickest and most exciting way to get there was chartering a flight to Quepos Managua Airport via Prestige Wings on a PIPER SENECA PA-34-200T. The approximately 30 minute flight was an amazing way to actually see where you were in Costa Rica and where you were going to end up. Being a photographer for 25+ years, yeah this was awesome!
At Quepos Managua Airport we were able to rent a "4x4" (recommended for exploring and the ride up the side of the mountain to Casa La Big Sur). I also recommend getting the rental auto insurance, safest thing you can do in another country where you are unfamiliar with the roads. It only took us about 30 minutes to get to the private gate of Casa La Big Sur and along the way there were many awesome "soda" stops to enjoy. Experience Traditional Costa Rican Cuisine at the Soda's (not Coke), which are small diners specializing in typical local food. Every single one we ate at had GREAT food and drinks, especially the local traditional nachos.
Back to "Casa La Big Sur"... The views up the mountainside getting there were incredible, but the BEST are the views from anywhere in and around the Casa! The Casa is a beauty, layout, landscape, location, convenience and condition are 5 star resort style top notch. The hot tub and negative edge pool that looks like it flows into the Pacific are stunning. Onsite security, cameras, a/c and the staff are just wonderful. Wake up in the morning from any one of the 5 bedrooms and you have an AWESOME sunrise view. We were greeted by Chestnut-mandibled Toucan's every morning and evening, just TOO cool.
Do your internet research and you will find out almost all you need to know, except maybe some inside tips from our AWESOME private chef, "Roger" who we had make us some very, very, very tasty meals a couple times. Believe me there are plenty of activities all around the area, just pick and choose and plan carefully.
There is just too much I could say about the whole 9 day trip to post here, but I think you get the idea. This is one of the best places to choose to stay, thumbs up all the way to the top of the mountainside in the Jungle. (P.S., for awesome food and drinks there is a local bar only about a quarter mile walk from the Casa and it is called and it is called "Bar Jolly Roger").
We spent a week at Casa Big Sur with a group of friends for our 10th wedding anniversary. We travel often and have rented many houses around the world. This was simply the best vacation we have had. The views are breathtaking and the perfect way to wake up every morning. Our first morning there we were able to watch the monkeys in the trees from the balcony and enjoyed many sightings of various wildlife throughout our stay. We were able to relax but were still close enough to town that we could enjoy some of the activities and beaches within ten minutes. I cannot say enough about the staff and the attention they paid to our every want. From scheduling excursions to cooking and keeping the house stocked with whatever we wanted they did an amazing job. Yendry and Albany always greeted us with a smile and paid great attention to all details. Roger(the Chef) was also amazing and I would strongly recommend his services. Sidia was very responsive and helpful to my many many emails while planning the trip and made sure all the excursions were booked and we were where we needed to be when we needed to be there through out the trip. If you are looking to relax in paradise, this is your place.
We had heard about Costa Rica for years and how beautiful it is and finally got a chance to visit on 04/01/14. We stayed at Casa Big Sur and the only way to describe it is heavenly. The home sits high on hillside looking at one of the most magnificent views in the world. The views of the rain forest and coast line are breathtaking, allowing us to see Costa Rica in a way only a few get to see. This home is such a Rock-Star home that we didn't need to leave to go out and explore every day. We just wanted to stay and relax in the infinity pool over looking this majestic view. There are few chances one gets to stay in such a beautiful home and take in all the wonders of Costa Rica.
