My husband and I have been married for sixteen years. We have seven children and a loyal golden doodle. We live in Southwest Florida (near Naples) most of the year, but we are originally from New England and New York. We are huge mountain enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Catherine Ruth Pakaluk purchased this chalet in 2015
My husband and I have vacationed in the White Mountains since we started dating over sixteen years ago. We've come year after year, bringing our growing family, hiking the same trails. Now our big kids carry our little kids up the same paths they were carried on as babies. After so many years, we wanted a place to call home, a place that would be our spot. In the summer of 2012 we rented this charming chalet with stunning valley and wilderness views and just the perfect location for a family vacation. We got to know the owner--a wonderful family man who built the chalet for his family in the late 70s. We remembered the place fondly ever since. When we saw this darling mountain home pop up in the listings in the spring of 2015, we thought it was meant to be. We could hardly believe it. Our favorite rental spot ever! We made an offer, spent the summer of 2015 updating the interior and exterior, and the rest is history. We've promised the original owner we'll try to honor the spirit of his chalet--it was the first property built on our road. A little piece of Glen/Bartlett history.
We think Sparrow's Nest has one of the best views in the White Mountain Valley. Tongue and groove pine walls and ceilings, exposed beams, and a brick fireplace give this chalet a warm, woodsy feel. Combined with the expansive valley views we think it's about the quintessential retreat spot. There is absolutely nothing that comes close to sitting on the private deck, taking in the views, with the grill smoking or the fireplace crackling.
We arrived on Friday night through very thick fog. The house was warm and well prepared for us! We woke up to pouring rain, which disappointed all of our skiers. By noon, however, the sun started peeking out, the clouds lifted and we were able to enjoy the spectacular view!! With the mild temperatures on Friday night the boys were able to enjoy the game room. The only negative is the long walk down to get to the house, 3 flights of stairs. It makes it difficult to pack and unpack the car. Catherine was very responsive and easy to work with. We will definitely consider renting this house again.
Great house for a quick weekend getaway. Wonderful views and very convenient to shopping and dining.
Spent two weeks with family at this quietly perfect mountainside retreat. Within easy reach of amazing hiking and outdoor activities, also, just a stones throw from North Conway. The owners are amazing and I would absolutely recommend this property
We stayed at this property with another family (total of 9 people plus 1 dog) as part of a ski vacation, visiting Attitash and Wildcat. The house was very well-kept and had plenty of room for kids (awake and asleep!) and adults. The kitchen was well-equipped and could easily handle cooking for our two families. The deck had beautiful views and great sunsets in the evening. The welcome packet provided by the owner was excellent and answered any questions you might have regarding your stay. The owner was also very responsive both thru VRBO and via phone.
Only two minor complaints which keep me from giving this 5 stars. The first is that accessing the house requires going down 3 flights of stairs from the garage. I will say the owner is very forthcoming about this so it is really more of a heads up that it is not a great house for going in and out multiple times per day. The second is that the driveway was covered in a thick layer of ice the week we were there, making loading/unloading from the cars a little tricky (and we did note other driveways in the neighborhood did not have this issue). Additionally, there are a couple of side doors next to the house that were completely snowed in and prevented ingress/egress to the side yards. I would think this is easily addressable by demanding more from the contractor hired to plow/shovel snow in the winter.
The two minor complaints aside, I think this is a great property to rent in the winter given its proximity to so many ski resorts and its capacity to house multiple families comfortably.
We had a great stay at the sparrows nest. The view was amazing. The house had everything we needed. We hope to return for another visit.
The only negative is the furniture is old and ou dated. I would book it again.
