About the property

2 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, 6 Sleeps

Nature lovers' hideaway. Amazing location with stunning marsh and bay views and short walk to idyllic almost empty bayside beaches.

Simple, architect-designed home built in 1983, positioned to enjoy southern light and expansive views of the ever changing marsh and bay beyond.

First floor - living/dining, slider to deck/dining/grill. Kitchen, half bath and spacious king bedroom (with a king bed and an extra twin bed) Upstairs - living room with cathedral ceiling and wood burning stove. Water views from every window. Slider to upstairs deck. Master king bedroom suite (king bed and an extra twin bed) with cathedral ceiling, ample closet space and adjoining bathroom. Light, bright and airy spaces throughout the home.

Family-friendly beach (and marsh inlet) is just a short 5 minute stroll down a sandy road. Or, walk 5 minutes on a different sandy road for a different beach altogether. Natural walks all around the island. Bike to trails.

For the ocean, Marconi Beach (part of the National Seashore) is 2 miles away. Town of Wellfleet ocean beach parking permits are available with rental.

Lieutenant's Island is a great secret of Cape Cod. We had visited Wellfleet for 15 years and never stepped foot on this wonderful island. One visit, and we were hooked. You will be surrounded by nature, beach, wildlife and water. Much of the land is Audubon protected. Enjoy ever-changing scenery as you walk or Kayak the island. Low tide reveals shallow waters teaming with terrapins, fiddler crabs and other shellfish.

Access the island by car/bike/foot across a wide, scenic marsh and one-lane wooden bridge. There are approximately 50 homes on Lieutenant's Island. All roads are well-maintained dirt/sand. Please note that the bridge is inaccessible at times during very high tides. This depends on the lunar calendar, and generally restricts access several days each month, for a few hours at a time. For us, this adds to the charm and relaxation (and the bridge makes a great diving platform). However, some guests may not like this feature. if you have questions, just let us know. We can point you to the tide chart for your planned visit as needed.

Other things to note:

There is no landline telephone or broadband or cable connection at the house. However, there is very good cell phone reception and we use our iPhones as wireless hotspots. Works great for email and internet. Not as reliable for Netflix/HBOGO.

We do have two TV monitors with DVD players at the house for unplugged/old school entertainment.

And of course, there are books.

Lovely retreat

  • 4 of 5

Honestly, the location of this house was just incredible. Beautiful empty bayside beaches that were walking distance in every direction, and even on a really busy holiday weekend, it was super easy to find a long quiet stretch all to yourself. The house itself was very roomy and fairly rustic in a barebones beach house kind of way. Matt, the owner, was very friendly and responsive when we needed things. The only reason I'm giving this a 4 star instead of 5 star review was 1) because it turned out we needed to do all the laundry for the bedding and towels before we left, so instead of enjoying the beach that morning, I was cleaning on top of the fee we had paid for cleaning, and 2) the towels and bedding need a serious upgrade. That said, we would totally go back to this charming home by the beach and had a great vacation there.

Owner's Response: Christina, Thanks so much for your comments. I am glad you enjoyed the house and the quiet local beaches! We are always happy to see new people appreciate the unique and peaceful surroundings of Lt. Island. Thanks also for your comments on the towels and linens. We had no idea that this would impact your stay. For next season, we'll have our cleaning service supply laundered guest towels and linens, which I expect will be easier for all involved. As you know, we only rent our house 1 or 2 times a season, so we are still getting the hang of things. Thanks again for your review and we're glad you enjoyed your stay. We hope you make it back soon! Matt
