About Mike Palmer

Our custom-built cabin was completed in 2010. We love spending time here no matter what time of year! There is always something to do, whether it is a long walk on the lakebed in the fall, watching the snow fall in the winter, or BBQs on the porch in the summer. Always a great time in Detroit, with lasting memories of time with friends and family.

Mike Palmer purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Mike Palmer chose Detroit

We have always loved vacationing at Detroit Lake and feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to build this beautiful cabin. We are happy to share! Besides the summer lake fun, it is close to Hoodoo Ski Resort and Mt. Bachelor, Salem, Sisters and Bend.

What makes this cabin unique

A favorite of the kids is to walk to the store and buy candy! The store is a short and safe walk from our cabin. Early-morning walks and late-night star gazing are also favorites. There is a peaceful energy year-round and a festive energy in summer!

All linens, towels, basic kitchen essentials and coffee filters are provided. We also stock the home with an initial supply of items such as toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap and dish soap. For most guests, the initial supply is enough however, we have found it helpful for some to bring extra. This is especially recommended for larger groups or guests staying for more than three nights. We do not stock any food items in the home so please bring all food you will need for your stay, including spices (if needed). There is also a picnic table and firepit

Detroit Lake house

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a very enjoyable stay. Lovely furnishings and home away from home feel. Very easy access for entry and departure. Steep driveway, but worth the beautiful view of lake and mountain.

Home away from home with amazing lake amenities & experience

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough great things about our stay. We came with a family of 10 for a family reunion on the lake. The house location was perfect: walking distance to the marina, where our boat was docked, and to the market & local restaurants. The house was clean and well stocked. The layout worked great for us, especially the bunk room for the kids to have their own area. In general, Detroit is an amazing location. Pristine mountain lake, extremely friendly people, and a place in need of our business (don't believe the news constantly talking about the toxic algae...geez!). Book this house and appreciate what Detroit has to offer.

A couple notes for buyers to be aware of: no WIFI, cable, or garbage service (you have to walk it into town or the marina... not a big deal). Upstairs futon doesn't unfold, so you have to move the mattress to the floor.

Looking forward to our next trip!

Great location

  • 3 of 5

Awesome house and location. Definitely not stocked with essentials, low on toilet paper, garbage bags, etc. The house was pretty clean. All of the towels smelled sour and there was only one washcloth provided. Overall, the best part of the House was the location.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking time to reveiw our cabin and providing feedback. I am sorry that you did not find the supplies to your liking and apologize for the towel situation. We will be purchasing new towels for guests and work with our cleaning crew to make sure that each group has the needed supplies. Again, thank you for your feedback and enjoy the rest of your summer.

Beware! Extremely poor hospitality and supply of basics!

  • 1 of 5

The home is beautiful even though rooms are a little small. We would have enjoyed our stay however the hospitality was beyond dissatisfactory. The home was not supplied with sufficient basics such as toilet paper, hand soap, dishwasher soap, shower soap, kitchen cloth for washing dishes and cleaning counters, hand and shower towels for bathrooms. And the washer/dryer was not in order for washing. The owners are extreme cheapskates when supplying the basic items for making a visit hospitable. Their home instructions say to contact them if we need anything during our stay, however, when we did contact them to let them know that there wasn't enough soap to run the dishwasher, complete lack of soap in the shower and not enough toilet paper they disregarded our requests and did not honor their offer to be hospitable if we needed anything. They had no intention of being hospitable to us, even though their description gives a song and dance that they supply basic items and that we could contact them during our stay if we needed anything. They just put us off by telling us that we could buy what we needed at the local grocery store. Beware - you will pay quadruple the price at the mini-grocery stores in town. The owner gave us pitiful answers to our needs saying that they only supply an "initial supply - a days worth" of the basics, then we could buy whatever else we needed at the store. We paid for three nights, yet they only supply a day's worth of basics and no shower soap at all. When we mentioned that there was no shower soap, he minimized the request by calling it a "personal care item" and likened it to us asking for shampoo, which we never requested. I informed him that we have never stayed in a vacation/hotel/motel situation where they don't supply soap for the shower. They do not have any intention of being hospitable. We stayed for three nights with a group of 13, and they supplied us three dishwasher pods. We paid $75 extra for our thirteenth person in the group and for the $75 the owners could have supplied the basics in this house for 3 months! We had to spend close to $7 at the local grocery store for 20 dishwasher pods! And other items like toilet paper are ridiculously expensive at this store that he sent us to. These owners were completely inhospitable! I would not recommend staying here with folks who were cheapskates and inhospitable. Our stay was unpleasant and very disappointing as a result of the inhospitality

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. We are pleased you found our mountain cabin beautiful. We take pride in maintaining it in like-new condition for our guests. Over the past seven years, we have opened our cabin to hundreds of guests to enjoy the beautiful Detroit Lake area, with many repeat customers. We also pride ourselves in keeping our pricing affordable so that many families, such as yours, can enjoy the experience. The cabin is an exceptional value for families planning a get-away together. Overwhelmingly, our guests find our cabin well-suited for their needs. It is unfortunate that we were unable to meet your specific needs. As we mentioned the cabin is stocked with sufficient supplies for an average party, including two rolls of toilet paper in each bathroom, hand soap for all sinks, dishwasher detergent for three days, clean sponges, napkins, paper towels, bath towels, etc. We do not supply body soap, shampoo, or other personal care items. We encourage guests to bring any specific items they normally require outside of the usual standard supplies, and to consider the extra supplies needed for larger parties such as yours. Again, we are sorry we were not able to meet your needs. We wish you the best of luck in your future vacation rental experiences.

Clean, quiet, comfortable, welcoming, well-kept.

  • 5 of 5

My family felt very welcome and comfortable in the cabin. The owners were very accommodating and nice. Opening and closing instructions were clear and understanding. The cabin was well stocked ( except for extra toilet paper. Might want to bring your own). Beautiful area and quiet surroundings. We will definitely book this cabin again.
