For recreation- I enjoy snorkeling, hiking, camping, yoga and hula dancing. I am also a community activist, planetary citizen, nature lover-conservationist, and practicing some permaculture on my land. Island Eyes Video is my special events video production business. I enjoy getting acquainted with my guests and helping them learn of the many beautiful places and special happenings of our island community.
I attended Ohio Wesleyan University two years and then returned to my home state and graduated from University of Kentucky.
What a wonderful spot this is! When we pulled up around 8 pm we were treated to the sounds of coqui frogs and other nocturnal callers. Mary greeted us warmly despite our late arrival and gave us a nice tour of her clean, comfortable suite. Our toddler loved picking (and eating) tangerines from her tree, and we enjoyed the peaceful, away-from-it-all surroundings. We would recommend Mary's place without hesitation to anyone who's looking for a base near Hilo to explore the east side of the island.
When we go to Hawaii, we want the real South Pacific, feeling and experience and we got it all.
The house was very much Hawaiian, beautiful backyard (huge backyard) where all you could hear is wild life and view beautiful Hawaiian vegetation, trees, flowers and fruit trees.
The host very helpful and accommodative with everything. Could not ask for better experience.

The property was amazing. Set back off the road you could not see neighbors of traffic. Her yard is very well maintained. I was very comfortable and would stay with Mary again.
Greeted with a fresh fruit bowl overflowing with tropical treats, Mary Marvin is a wonderfully active, knowledgable and generously kind host. A spacious abode with a cute lanai, wifi and parking... Mary Marvin's home was exactly what I was looking for in a peaceful, reflective and convenient stay in Hawai'i. Thanks Mary Marvin!
We are Big Island residents and needed a place to stay while work was being done on our home here in Puna. This place was a perfect fit for our needs. Mary, the owner / manager, made us feel welcome and comfortable. We had some special needs and Mary was very accommodating and gracious. The unit is clean, spacious and very workable. We felt safe and at home. The yard is beautiful and we appreciated the views, natural light and air flow. We will definitely tell visiting family and friends about this vacation rental option!
Unit was clean and well maintained. Owner, Mary, was a great source of local information from fresh market locations to environmental issues. She lives on the property and was friendly and genuinely concerned that we enjoyed our stay not only with her but in Hawai'i. The bed was a little small but comfortable and clean.
Great location for visiting Volcano Park, Puna, Hilo, and south point. We cooked all our meals in the unit. The kitchen is barebones but it's all there. Enjoyed wonderful fresh fruit everyday grown by Mary on the property!
We would recommend this location to all you want to experience the ohia forests in SE Big Island.
