About the property

The Watauga River Cabinito

A lovely little cabin resting on the sun speckled banks of the Watauga River. Nestled between the AWA takeout for the Watauga Gorge Run & Cherokee National Forest. At the end of a dirt road and over a little creek & you find The Cabinito awaiting you. As you walk in to our small cozy cabin from the front or back porch you enter the kitchen/living/dining room. From there you can see a bathroom and 2 bedrooms, one with a queen bed and a tv/dvd, and one with a double/twin bunk bed. Above the bedrooms there is a loft with a queen bed, a low ceiling and the couch that folds out into a double bed. Out the back door the creek cascades down into the river and where they meet you will find kayaks, intertubes, and a little swim hole. Hike around the river for some big swim holes and perfect fishing spots. Or take a short drive down the road 3 miles to the Watauga Lake and Pioneer Landing Marina. Located 18 miles (30 minutes) to Boone NC and 35 miles (1hour) drive to Johnson City or Bristol TN. There is spotty cell reception at the cabinito; closest reception is 2 miles away. No internet but it does have an honest land line that will call anyone you might want to talk to. Take a break and enjoy the reprise from cell phones ringing & internet pinging and enjoy the dappled sunlight and the pristine waters of Watuga river, one of the most beautiful rivers in the Appalachian mountains! Included in the rental price are the options for kayaks and bicycles!!!...so you're getting a virtual adventure package when you choose to rent the Cabinito!!

About Owner/Manager

We're the coolest people on the planet.

Owner/Manager purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Owner/Manager chose Tennessee

We have a 24 acre farm on the Watauga River and when the opportunity arose to purchase additional acreage with a cabin bordering our farm, we didnt hesitate even a moment because we know how beautiful the cabin and its surroundings are and secondly because of the rarity of the opportunity. We love renovating, building and decorating... the Cabinito offered us all that and more! We're enjoying the process of seeing it become more and more hospitable with amenities being added frequently.

What makes this cabin unique

The feeling of being away from it all in a rustic cabin with old growth trees and a wild river flowing gives us a feeling of relaxation unparalleled by other vacation experiences. Bordered on the Cherokee National forest you are literally away from development and the disappointment of stumbling on a housing development or strip mall in the middle of nowhere. If you enjoy deep relaxation, you will find it here. And don't forget that included in the rental price are options for boats and bicycles!

Perfect seclusion getaway

  • 4 of 5

We were looking for somewhere secluded in the mountains and did we find it! The Cabinito is perfect if you are looking for seclusion, beautiful views, and a serene river just steps away. We kayaked majority of the time and enjoyed trying the zip line. We were also blessed with hundreds of butterflies along the river, just beautiful! The deck is perfect for a sunrise, sunset or listening to the rain. Our weekend away from all the distractions of today was exactly what we needed and we can't wait to return. Oh and our two dogs had a blast too, it is a little steep to get to the river but our dogs had no issues slowly walking down to the dock area.

Thanks for letting us stay and enjoy this special place Mike!

I could move in permanently!

It's like the tree house you wanted to build as a kid at the edge of the water. The cabin was cozy. Excellent outdoor grill. Waterfalls, outdoor string lights, fishing poles, kayaks and cool places to swim and fish. We will be back. Had a blast!

Rustic adventure. If you want an adventure you will never forget this is the place.

  • 5 of 5

Rough start but thanks to Mike we got it all sorted out. Car navigator took us right to the place. Don't expect classic luxury- this place is about fun adventure water sports and family. This is what life was meant to be- fresh flowing waters, fishing, kayaks island adventure and a fun cabin to cook your catch or anything else you wish. Be prepared to work a bit to get to where you want to go if you want to explore the larger rapids or the island but it is just as perfect to tie up a kayak and relax on the lazy river or toss out a line from the shore. So happy they are sharing this slice of heaven and thinking we maybe need our own after this. Will be back without the kids and then again with - thank you for an amazing vacation!!!!!

A wonderful location to get away from it all. Very cozy with fun things to do outside.

If you are looking for a place to get away from it all, this is the place for you. If you use the Waze app, you will find it without any difficulty. We discovered this after first getting lost. Best to get there before dark because it is remote. We loved it. Played in the creek with the provided kayaks, hiked on the "island", ate on the deck and warmed up by the fire along the creek. Place was very clean. Kitchen has an amazing gas stove. Description is accurate. The only issue we had with the place is the master bedroom bed. We chose to not sleep on it because the frame leans and it is very wobbly. The other beds are comfortable. We hope to visit again in the future.

Great fun

  • 4 of 5

It was secluded and loaded with options to explore.

Mike and his wife were awesome hosts who love their land and their enthusiasm shows.

They shared their local honey and mead with us and provided a front row seat for the harvest moon.

It is off the beaten path so expect a bit of adventure getting there.
