Overview

About the property

Charming historic Provence village

At the gateway to Haute Provence and the hills of Var, near the Verdon gorges and the Lake of St. Croix, this peaceful village, set on a limestone cliff, is an inviting stop for visitors.

Barjols and life have been determined for centuries by the omnipresence of water. Barjols is a town of fountains, and a fountain‐finding tour is a great way to discover the town.

There are at least a couple of dozen of them, of varying sizes and styles, and many incorporating washouses. The washhouses are mostly small, and of rather varied and

interesting shapes.

Its rich past is shown clearly in the 11th century Collegiate Church, the Fountain Trail, the Regional Water Museum, the Carmes waterfall, the Fête des Tripettes, and the leather fair. Indeed, it is leather that was the mainstay of the village until just a few decades ago when production moved to emerging economies and economic decline set in.

Because of this more recent industrial past Barjols didn't develop into a big tourist destination and so has kept many features and characters of French village life.

About Barbara Keith

I am born and raised in France and moved to Switzerland and the USA 25 years ago for a job. Today, after travels around the word, and living In Chicago, Santa Fe, Dallas, we are now in North Carolina with my family. As a life long expatriate, I hope to retire in France. Barjols is my soul and respite of my souvenir of what France was like, everything there is always the same... It is such a a nice break from civilization and the rat race we created for ourselves.

Barbara Keith purchased this apartment in 1991

Why Barbara Keith chose Barjols

My mother, a famous sculptor from Paris, bought a large studio in Barjols –a convenient place to bring her marbles from Italy. Barjols also encouraged artists to settle and takeover the tanneries lofts in town to energize the town. She helped me buy this cute apartment steps away from her house and studio so that I would visit her in the summer and one day come back to France to be with her. Without her, I would have never been able to buy here – you have to know people and it is a word of mouth process. This historical building meant a lot to me as a way to reconnect me with my country.

What makes this apartment unique

I love to come back to Barjols, nothing ever changes, people still recognize my when I visit , The town has this unbelievable authenticity and is so refreshing compared to all the villages filled with tourists. It is a great place to go and visit my friends all around Provence and the Riviera and always discover new things – so much to see.

Delightful apartment!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay in Barbara and Dana's Barjols apartment - it is delightful, clean, quiet and well appointed. A comfortable home away from home and a convenient location from which to explore the surrounding areas. We especially liked relaxing in the sun-drenched living room with a bottle of wine after a long day of touring. Barjols itself was charming with all the fountains and seems a bit off the beaten track which was exactly what we were looking for - we enjoyed walking to visit the waterfalls and grottos at Vallon Des Carmes, had a very leisurely two-hour lunch at a café in the main square and also ended up finding some books in English at the little free library located at the corner. THANK YOU!
