Great neighbourhood and house

  • 5 of 5

This place was great! We stayed here for the Chicago Marathon and it was an ideal location. We rented both units in the house. We could walk everywhere or take the train, and lots of great bars and restaurants nearby. Also, great proximity to Lincoln Park and the running/bike paths. The place is steps away from Twin Anchors pub which has great ribs. The management was responsive to our needs and answered all questions in a timely manner. We would definitely come back. I love the Old Town !

Showing its age

Old town is a delightful neighborhood: don't miss Wells Street. Wandering the streets around The Biddle house is a delight and the short, 1 1/2 block walk to the "El" is great for getting down town and Wrigleyville each 10 minutes distant. All the usual stores are a couple of blocks away. The location is great.

The house, 2 apartments, is in need of a little TLC however. Everything works but is old. The in-window AC units are loud, squeaky and vibrate worryingly. The bathtubs have nicks and scratches and faucets drip annoyingly and wastefully. The tiles have darkening grout. The cutlery, dishes and glassware encourage dining out. Time to invest I think.

A house fast approaching its second century of existence is bound to be a little quirky. Sloping floors, steep stairs and doors that stick are to be expected and add to the charm. Trailing power cords that wrap around door jambs preventing doors from closing are not.

One roll of bath tissue per bathroom seemed unreasonably parsimonious. The empty water cooler bottles seemed lazy. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime Now.

We had a great time in Chicago. My wife, our four kids and their plus ones, made The Biddle House our "base camp" for exploring the city. We didn't have family time in the home, as we had expected, instead choosing to hang out in the Twin Anchors pub across the street.

The Biddle House deserves some care and attention in keeping with her venerable age and role in Chicago history.

The property location was a 5 star. A few hiccups on readiness of the property for us, but okay.

  • 5 of 5

We arrived 20 minutes before check in and the property had not been cleaned or beds changed from earlier guests. We had emailed and called a day before to let them know we would be arriving early. It was not a problem and the cleaning people came to complete their tasks. However, we did not have wash cloths nor kitchen towels for doing dishes nor dish detergent. After talking with Liz, this was taken care of. We had not received updated WIFI info for using our IPADs and phones. Liz helped with that also. Now the very positive: the apartments were very convenient to the El, buses, grocery stores, restaurants, etc. The neighborhood was very nice, we felt quite safe and the people we met walking to and fro were very friendly and helpful. We took bus tours, food tours, and boat tours. Each was excellent with great lectures on the architecture, history, and neighborhoods of Chicago. Chicago is a beautiful city that was easily doable by our high school chums of a young 75 year old body holding an18 year old spirit. The police we asked for directions were so helpful, the waiters and waitresses were very professional, as were the clerks in the stores and the tour guides. The people who attend to the flowers and gardens in Chicago are to be commended for the absolutely gorgeous landscaping. Chicago is a human sized city that should be a tourist destination for everyone in the USA at least once!!

Great middle ground between a hotel and staying at an individually owned property

  • 5 of 5

This property, while VRBO, is managed by a professional group - http://www.athomeinnchicago.com. We saw the benefits of this arrangement immediately when the wax ring on the toilet broke while we were there. We called while on our way to the Shedd Aquarium downtown and it was fixed before we made it back to the unit. I'm not sure that would have happened if this was just someone's house they were away from. And everything in terms of payment and details for checking in were extremely clear and well documented.

As for the accommodations, they were exactly as advertised. Pictures perfectly represent the property and the location is great. Being a few blocks from the Sedgwick stop on the EL means you can get just about anywhere in the city easily.

My only minor complaint is that the property smelled musty and that took some getting used to. The place was reasonably clean but not immaculate. We have very young kids so I spent quite a bit of time on the floor and fishing toys out from under furniture so keep in mind that my inspection of the cleanliness got a little more intense than most people will experience!

I would definitely stay again.

I was really pleased with my three day stay. Everything was clean and quite comfortable, and especially warm- it was hovering around negative degrees outside. All amenities for cooking and cleaning were available so I didn't have to alter my diet and eat out while there. The code entry doors were nice, didn't have to fumble around with a key or key card. The house is extremely historic and retains enough old time charm without sacrificing modern convieniences. Parking was decent, wasnt hard to find a spot despite deep snow on the ground. We will be staying there again next we come back to Chicago!
