Photos and Description of this 5 bedroom holiday home in Sunderland - Sunderland Vistas

Beautiful Tiled Estate on 3 acres, 5 Bedrooms/ 2.5 Baths, huge parking area

Enjoy STUNNING views of Mount Equinox in three directions. There are 5 bedrooms, 2 full baths and one half bathroom. Enjoy the nightly sunset from the Venetian tiled screened porch, or lounge on the wrap-around decks. In the winter you can sled down the front hill, in the summer - it's great for pick-up sports. The master suite has a walk-in closet, Travertine marble bathroom, and screened porch with 2 hanging chairs and a hammock. The main living area boasts cathedral ceilings, hardwood floors, a wood-burning stove and tile mosaics. Each bedroom is themed so family and friends can stay in the Jungle room, Nemo room, or Safari room with murals and frescoes. The iron-rail balcony overlooks the decorative hearthstone wood-burning stove from 20 feet above. 10 people will sleep comfortably in beds, and there are 3 big couches and plenty of blankets if you want to accommodate extra people.

A sun-room includes a soothing fountain that can be turned on to enjoy the sound of running water. There's ample parking and a large turn-around for horse trailers. Enjoy campfires in the outdoor fire pit or bar-b-que on the grill nightly. Kids will enjoy playing in the castle-themed tree house or sliding down the fireman's pole. The 3 acre front yard is flat lawn, perfect for pick-up sports games.

Unique curb appeal make this one of the most recognizable homes in town.

There's a 5-mile jogging loop around the local roads - most of them dirt. Just leave the driveway, start jogging, and just keep turning right until you get back to the house. Or walk 4 miles across the valley and up the other side to the incredibly scenic, high-elevation sheep farm. Grab a raft and float the Battenkill River. Within a mile, there are 2 bridges - Park a car at the south bridge and hitch a ride to the north bridge where you can "put in" for a really relaxing 2 hour river float.

Evenings are spent in the stone campfire veranda, or enjoying the sunsets by just hanging around in hammocks. The sun sets right over the mountains in front of the house and the screened porch provides the most incredible mood-lighting every night. Walk a quarter mile to the Hill Farm Inn every Thursday night for the little-known, but highly attended locals night. Strangers are soon friends and you'll enjoy the restaurant in the newly renovated Hill Farm Inn. Then walk home without the worry of a drive.

About Heather Chirtea

The property has 2 houses. We actually live in one, and rent the other. It's awesome because there's always someone here to help, guide you to the waterfalls, or to borrow butter from! Gordon is the President of Tool Factory, a technology company for education. He's our go-to guy whenever we need something fixed. Heather runs the nonprofit Digital Wish and doubles as the manager/"mom-ager" for Adrian and Julian, the 18-year-old identical twin singer-songwriters who make up the band Take 2. Check them out at - The twins have competed on both X-Factor and The Voice TV shows, making it to bootcamp, and their first album just launched. So if you stay here, and the twins are around, you are guaranteed to get a free concert. They have over 2.5 million hits on YouTube, 15K followers, and loads of fans. There's music in the wind here, so you may catch us shooting music videos.

Heather Chirtea purchased this house in 2004

Why Heather Chirtea chose Stratton and Bromley Ski Areas

Our British business partner said it best. "I've traveled all over the world and I don't think I've ever seen a more beautiful piece of property." The views are absolutely stunning, at every time of the day. During the day, it's sunny mountains, no humidity, and green, green, green. From 5:00-8:00PM every night, a progressively heightening golden glow settles over the property as the sun sets. The hammock and hanging chairs on the screen porch are pretty much the center of the universe in the summer. We bar-b-que on the deck and eat outside every night in the summer. Then 2-3 times a week we have a campfire in the stone fire pit. It's built into the hill, so there's plenty of places to sit and enjoy the awesome smell of woodsmoke with friends around the fire. Stacks of wood are always available to fuel the flame, and of course, there's music. Many nights we'll get marshmallows and hens and just cook right on the open flames. The sun sets over the mountain peaks across the valley and we always "cheer" to the last light of day. Then you've got a good hour to watch nightfall settle. The frogs start a chorus, lightning bugs occasionally light up the fields, and the stars come out. The air is so dry and clear that you can enjoy endless stars, stars for miles, shooting stars, and (if we believe the locals) occasional UFO sightings. We think they are crazy, but who knows! By morning, the clouds settle over the mountain peaks. Many mornings the mountain tops are buried in the clouds, and then the clouds burn off by 10:00AM. We can get incredible thunder storms that pass through mid-day, and then the sun comes out. The clouds can be amazing. In the fall, the entire region turns to gold, orange, and red. In the winter - the wood stove keeps you toasty warm, and the huge hill out front is ideal for sledding and making snowboard jumps.

What makes this house unique

This is the house in town that everyone says, "I've always wanted to see what the inside of that house looks like..." or " OMG, you live in THAT house? I LOVE that house!" It's one of the most recognizable houses in town. The location of this property is awesome. We're 5 miles from Manchester, so we're close enough to get groceries, but far enough away that we don't have to worrry about Manchester's crazy town restrictions. So nobody bothered us that day we decided to burn the Christmas tree and a 20 foot flame shot up into the sky! It takes us 13 minutes to drive to Bromley ski resort and 20 minutes to Stratton resort. Also, Riley Ice Rink is only 10 minutes away, so even in the summertime, we can ice skate. It's also an hour to Saratoga Raceway and we love going to the horse races. We do overnight trips every summer to Saratoga to bet on the horses, and go to Six Flags Amusement park in Lake George. The twins have been playing hockey since they were 5, so some winters we will actually turn the back driveway into a 90 foot ice rink. We get a huge plastic liner, staple it to the walls, and flood the back parking area until it freezes over into a 90 foot ice rink.

BEAUTIFUL house in a great area in Vermont.

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I recently traveled to Vermont for our best friend's wedding and were looking for a place that could comfortably house all of us for a long weekend (there were 9 in our group). This ended up being the PERFECT spot. Not only is it a fantastic location (only a 10 minute drive to the supermarket in Manchester Center, so last minute food runs are not a problem), but the property was spacious, clean and more than comfortable to stay in. We all felt immediately at home. The owners are lovely and live on a separated section of the same house. They are reachable if needed but don't intrude on your stay in any way. We always had plenty of privacy and the space that we lived in was ours. And the space is something! Big living room and kitchen, lots of fun bedrooms (TIGER ROOM, HELLO), nobody felt like they were stepping on anyone else's toes which was impressive given how many of us there were (getting ready for a wedding, no less). The surrounding area is charming and there is plenty to do (as evidenced by a handy locals guide left by Heather). We had a great time barbecuing on the patio (just bring some yard guard and you're good to go) and even utilized the fire pit. None of us wanted to leave and we immediately started daydreaming about coming back to explore the area more. Finally, I can attest to the views from the property being STUNNING. Wonderful house and a great time we will never forget!

You won't want to leave

  • 5 of 5

Arrival at Heather and Gordon's place looked just like we were pulling up to the house in the photos... except that photo is wrapped in an amazing valley that really defies adequate description. Gordon was very accommodating, and met us to give us the tour of the house... which is just as unique as shown in the photos. There were 5 of us - 3 adults, and 2 teenage girls... and 2 ginormous dogs...and never once did we feel like we were tripping over each other. Everything worked, and was clean. Now... this is a mountain house... with no air conditioning... so when you open windows, sometimes you get a few bugs, and there's a basement... that kind of smells like a basement - go figure. So this is not a pristine penthouse suite in NYC... it has way more character than that. They raised their sons in this house, and you can see how a family can enjoy living in it. If you're lucky enough to sleep in the master bedroom, the views of the valley when you wake up and the sun is filtering through the cloud bank that layers the valley... breathtaking. And time with the fire pit at sunset and after dark is priceless... but in the summertime, take bug spray! Gordon and Heather are a wealth of knowledge about the local area, including awesome hikes and excellent restaurants. It's an easy and scenic drive into Manchester - and not far from a few other towns as well. We had a fantastic time, and appreciated their hospitality and assistance. We would definitely rent again!

**Beware** ... I would NOT recommend this property

  • 1 of 5

PROS: Beautiful property grounds & views, Large deck, Location CONS: Owners remain on site & stay in the other side of the house. We weren’t advised of this when renting. You don’t get the full property. Mold and Mildew - Basement has a strong smell of mold & while the listing has a bedroom in the basement, it was not habitable due to mold. Ants & Bugs ... We saw lots of dead bugs & spiders around the house, as well as a ton of ants in the kitchen. We saw a steady stream of ants (both small & large) all over the kitchen counter tops; in the cabinets where the pots and pans are stored; all over the coffee table in the living room; All over the floor by the TV. Disrepair - There are many things in the house that don't work. The ceiling fan did not work, which was a problem, as the house doesn't have A/C and the majority of the windows don't have screens on them, so you have no airflow. You also can’t open the back door as there is no screen on the door; the frame is there, but the screen is missing. We had an issue with a skylight stuck in the open position and was missing the handle, so when a rainstorm rolled in at 4am, we were soaked in bed. Told the owner the next AM & he laughed indicating he knew this window had an issue. The fridge did not keep temperature. We turned the temp. down as far as it would go, but it didn't get cooler than mid 40s (we used one of the oven thermometers). The screened porch has gaping holes in it & the hammock from the pictures is not there. Not clean - The house was not clean; spider webs, dead bugs, carpets stained & filled with dog hair & even a puddle of brown water with dead moths at the bottom of the fridge. The owners claimed it was professionally cleaned, but the photos we have show otherwise. Dog - The owners have a dog and let it wander throughout the property. We stepped in dog poop several times & found the dog inside of our house several times. The dog was friendly, but if you are not a dog person (as was the case with some of my guests) this is an issue. The house on HomeAway is listed as a 5 bed, however the owners are also selling this property and their MLS listing shows it as a 4 bed house, which indicates to me that they know that the room in the basement is not habitable. When we contacted Heather about these issues after our stay she was dismissive of the issues & ignored most. Since our stay completed, she has been difficult to get in touch with. BEWARE!

Owner's Response: OWNERS BEWARE - Robyn should be banned from Home Away. Her group stayed in our house, partied until late hours, brought more people to the property the next night, then claimed the property was in disrepair in order to demand all her money back. I never received a single message that anything was wrong until the day after she left - when she demanded all her money back. Owners, don't rent to Robyn unless you want to fall prey to the same SCAM.

Countryside paradise

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough nice things about this house, the property and surrounding area, and the owners! The house was beautiful, charmingly unique, clean, and fully functional - everyone loved their rooms and we had fun hanging out in the kitchen and living room together. The deck was a real highlight; beautiful views and sunsets, plenty of space for socializing, grilling, and eating. The lawn was spacious enough for a marathon frisbee game and the fire pit was home base when the sun went down. The owners were very responsive and full of local recommendations, and as if by telepathy they knew we were looking for privacy and so left us with the place completely to ourselves. Highly recommended.

Sunderland is on the south side of Manchester, and the house sits just a few short miles from town. Drive through endless stone walls and mansions to get there. Manchester, Vermont is a beautiful tourist area with loads of shopping and activities for tourists. Seated at the foot of the green mountains, it's a hub for Horse show participants, skiers, shoppers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The Appalachian hiking trail (we call it Long Trail) is just a short ride up the mountain and you can hike all the way to Georgia, if you have the time!

On Green Peak mountain, just a few miles north of Manchester, there are bat caves and rock quarries. The easy 1-2 mile hike up the mountain will lead to mysterious underground caverns and a wide chimney face that many rock climbers enjoy. There are multiple rock quarries, and even a swimming quarry in nearby Dorset.

Sunderland is also steeped in history. It's home to the cemetery where Ira Allen is buried, of the famed Green Mountain Boys. Just hike up the street to see his burial place and explore all the interesting gravestones across from a historical church. After that go fly fishing on the Battenkill or hike the river trail which is just down the hill. Battenkill Canoe is 1 mile away and you can rent canoes for the day. Visit Bennington for the Robert Frost grave and museum. Then drive further south to the fascinating Clark museum where some of the most famous artwork in the world is housed.

We can also guide you to some little known local waterfalls.
