Originally known as Indian Rocks South Shore, this quiet beach town is one of the oldest and smallest beach communities with the longest name. It was named Indian Rocks Beach, South Shore because the tiny community wanted a separate identity from the City of Indian Rocks Beach. The Town averages only a block in width between the Gulf of Mexico and by an area known as The Narrows.

It was originally an Indian campsite and got its name from the large red rocks found along its shoreline. Its first "settlers" were a pair of Robinson Crusoe-Type brothers named Cochran. In 1883 four Cedar Key speculators sailing to St. Petersburg, stopped to explore the Island. They were fascinated by the Island's possibilities for future development and bought it from the Cochran Brothers for a nominal sum. It is said the brothers bartered their Island "for little more than a string of beads and $25.00, figuratively speaking, like the Indians of Manhattan". The region soon became a popular residential and vacation area for many prominent Tampans such as the McKay family. (Tampa Tribune)

Until a wooden turn bridge was built in 1916, a ferryboat transported pedestrians to the Island, and a barge carried horses, buggies and a few automobiles to the summer resort. In 1905 the Railroad ran a spur line from the mainland to the beach and a hotel was built, adding to the Island's popularity. The railroad spur was abandoned later, but the community continued to grow especially during the Post-World War II building boom. Eventually in 1973 the name was officially changed to the more manageable Indian Shores. Presently the town's residential quality and its assortment of shops and restaurants help visitors feel right at home and is popular from snowbirds to seabirds. Favorite local spots are the eccentric Indian Shores Coffee Company and the popular Salt Rock Grill.

Amazing family vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

This is a very clean property, wonderfully located within walking distance to just about anything you need! We stayed in a lower level condo that was just steps from the beach! Beach chairs, fire pit, umbrellas, outdoor coolers and kayaks were available for our use during our stay. This was our first vacation with our 3 year old son and the gulf water was perfectly calm and the beach was beautiful and clean for his first time! He loved it and keeps asking to go back! We loved this property and the travel company made sure we had all the information on the area attractions, bars, restaurants and shops that we needed! We can not wait to book our next trip to this property!

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect place for a quick vacation! Not too big, not too small! It was well cleaned and right on the beach. We also loved all the extras they kept around the property. We grilled, had a fire on the beach, kayaked and paddle boarded... all because of the items they supplied. Would definitely come back!

The property is beautiful and we were very happy with the accommodations.

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect location for us to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We wanted a nice quite getaway and this fit the bill. We took advantage of your favorite restaurant list you supplied and had some incredible dining experiences. The accommodations were really good. The unit was clean and well kept. The information you provided about the area was invaluable. We look forward to visiting again in the future.

The only down side was the queen size bed. Not very comfortable. Other than that, everything was great!!

Perfect beach location + quiet area

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here! The condo was very clean and comfortable. It really is on the beach - you're not walking for blocks to get there, just a few steps as shown in the photos. They provided lounge chairs and umbrellas on-site as well as kayaks. There are plenty of outdoor dining tables for all of the 8 units plus nice grills. We were able to walk to several restaurants and had a short Uber ride to others down the strip (restaurants have pretty limited parking and Uber was cheap). I loved that most of the condos in this area had a low # of floors - it made the beach much less crowded than Clearwater Beach or St. Pete's Beach. I would stay again!
