We were a mix of couples and friends (ten total) who wanted to spend a week on the lake and visiting nearby vineyards. We enjoyed our stay and think the house was represented fairly by the listing, but probably wouldn't come back.
First, the outdoors. The views are gorgeous, and there are plenty of relaxing places to see them from: the dining patio, the lounge gazebo (a bit overstuffed with furniture), the boathouse balcony, and the quirky garage door boathouse porch. The dock is wide and long, though unfortunately the ladder steps into the water were not at the end of the dock. This meant we had to enter the lake from half way down the dock directly into seaweed. The two kayaks were fun and the Tropical Tahiti (google it!) was awesome and made it really great to hang out on the water a bit further from the seaweed. One thing that may not come through in the pictures is that the neighbors are very close, making a sense of wilderness and privacy a bit tough to achieve. On the bright side, they are very pleasant folks who even offered us their water toys!
Now, the indoors, which were less than stellar. The house didn't seem to be carefully cleaned. The bathroom tub had standing water, and everything generally seemed dusty, causing a few folks' allergies to flare up. Coupled with less than comfortable beds, this meant getting a good night's sleep was a challenge. In the main house the front door doorstop is a thick sharp metal plate screwed into the floor, which was not just a tripping hazard but also such a toe-stubbing hazard that we had to cover it with a cardboard box.
The incenerating toilet in the boathouse is an adventure. Even though the owners were extremely helpful in helping us get it to work, it's still awkward and unpleasant when used correctly, leaving the boathouse bedroom smelling like an unfortunate mix of intense cherry masking scent and mounting unburnt waste, until you've accumulated enough to fiddle with the ignition key to start a 3-hour burn cycle. The fact that this contraption is right next to a properly draining sink makes the whole thing seem farcical.
Overall, if you have a medium-sized group with a few people needing single beds, and you want to stay lakeside in the heart of wine country, you don't have too many choices, and our quibbles may seem minor to you. All in all, we had a good vacation. But when we come back to Seneca Lake, we'll try to find a cleaner, more secluded property with better (more?) plumbing.
We were a group of 10 people (5 couples) who came and stayed for a long weekend to be near to Glenora Wine Cellars for a wedding. Beautiful and well-appointed house conveniently located near Watkins Glen. Absolutely incredible outdoor space - covered patio up next to the main house with a gas grill and gas-powered ... fire table? (we made s'mores one night). The boathouse's downstairs area was great for socializing in the early evening. The house faces east, so sunrise is beautiful, but don't expect to sleep in.
The house really felt like someone else's home, mostly to our benefit. It worked great for 5 easy-going and not high maintenance 20-30 something couples. It also might be good for two families with older kids, but not great for older folks or toddlers/small kids - the stairs are very steep and the layout is somewhat precarious. The view and outdoor space can't be beat, but the 1.25 baths is tough for 10 people (unless they are low maintenance like us).
One quirk: the owners love air freshener and dislike flushing. The incinerating toilet in the boathouse that we were left a note to use, but not actively incinerate, scared most people off - so really it was 1 bath. The outdoor shower only had cold water.
All in all, we would definitely stay here again. The house was lovely and the property manager was pleasant to work with.
