About the property

Our Largest Shack 2 Bedroom 2 Bath

The Surf Shack

It’s a bittersweet offering that you are able to stay in one of our newest shacks. You see the Surf Shack was the unit WE lived in for 3 summers. We chose it because as you’ll see it is the best on our property-with 2 good sized bedrooms, each with their own full bath. We lived and loved every inch of it. From the front yard which has full afternoon sun, and is protected from the wind for those marginal beach days, to the high fence and overgrown vines you can pull up a chair and catch the shade on those 98 degree humid July afternoons. It has the biggest grill on property for you to fire up the burgers and steaks to perfection. In addition, you have an outdoor shower tucked away to wash off the salt and sand after a day at the beach. But it’s the INSIDE that we added all the little touches that will make you fall in love with her. With big windows facing south and west you can be flooded with sunshine (or draw the shades as you wake up on the couch with a well -earned hangover). For a touch of nostalgia you have our ORIGINAL Rathershacks sign in the vaulted ceiling living room. Also, you have one of our very cool dual headed fans to keep you comfortable and enhance the central air (let us know when you figure out which button makes it spin). The kitchen island was made from reclaimed wood from an 1860’s tobacco barn and is vintage South Carolina. We were going to take it with us to our new house across the street but it’s too darn heavy, so you win. All the appliances were upgraded to stainless steel so there is an air of Five Star luxury to your kitchen experience. You can’t miss our custom designed sunglasses + car key holder and sunscreen supply shelf—both are needed nooks for a vacation at the beach. It is our master bedroom we will miss the most…It gets morning sun, and you can watch the squirrels play on the lattice fence outside on most mornings. Our headboard is an old fireplace mantle found upstate in a 1905 Victorian house that we meticulously restored. It is the romantic centerpiece of our home, and this old mantle keeps her secrets. We painted it 49 shades of VERY LIGHT gray-nothing crazy-- so we hope you enjoy yourselves thoroughly! The second bedroom is adorned with a nautical theme and you will feel your inner ocean when you snooze. Both bathrooms have all new tile and fixtures so you can clean up in luxury as you head out on the town. With you as our guest, we know she will be in good hands.

About KATHERINE GRIMES

We met in the cold Granite State of New Hampshire, fell in love, sold our houses, threw away the snowshovels, and bought us a perfect shack in paradise. After we fixed her up... you now have the Rathershack in all its glory waiting for you to come and add the next chapter. We thank you in advance for helping us live our dream. We live on site so feel free to stop in for a cold one or advice on where to go hide out, or step out and kick up your dancin shoes. The sign over our door says PARTYville, but more often than not we flip it over so it reads NAPville. Sometimes one leads to the other. You know the drill........

Why KATHERINE GRIMES chose Charleston Area

We bought this place to live the simple life in a beach town, and have family and friends visit. Plus, wouldn't you rather deal with an owner who lives on site and is totally psyched to be here and have YOU as our guest.

We also have 5 other cottages to take a look at, go to HomeAway.com and check them out.

What makes this cottage unique

All bars on Folly Beach are within walking distance. Plus the house was pink...and we decided to keep the color.

Truly Enjoyed Our Time at SurfShack

  • 5 of 5

The house was even cuter than the pictures provided. We really enjoyed our stay and ability to cook, including using a grill. Having the beach chairs and towels was a lifesaver when we realized we forgot ours. Even though we had a few overcast days, the walk to the beach was so close that when it cleared up we were still able to get out.

Katherine and her husband were very welcoming and accommodating if we needed anything or had any questions. They even provided a list of good local restaurants/things to check out. When we come back to Folly Beach in the future, we will definitely consider staying again!

Great place on Folly beach.

  • 5 of 5

So close to the beach, and a short walk to downtown Folly beach. Very clean, and we'll kept. The only thing we wish, is that the ice maker would of worked. Other than that everything was great. Highly recommend this property.

Every moment in the Surfshack was delightful!I can't imagine staying anywhere else when visiting SC.

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we walked through the garden gate to the Surf Shack, we could feel its magic!

On entering our home away from home, the dwelling exceeded our expectations. The amount of love, pride and careful planning in utilizing every inch of the 800 sq feet provided us with high quality textiles, a beautiful living room with a very large flat screened television, complete with many on demand channels and Netflix too, fully equipped kitchen with a large island that served as both a large working area and table for eating.

The strategic placement of the bedrooms afford its occupants complete privacy when resting or bathing in the lovely private baths adjoining its ample sized bedroom. Each of the 2 bedrooms is beautifully decorated and boast a comfortable bed and private bath that deliver upscale, beautiful tiled floors and an endless supply of hot water to ensure a relaxing bath or shower. Katt's knack for artistic design is obvious in the choice of remod furnishings, use of color throughout this sweet home and gardens which lend a feeling of Boho chic total unwind and relax!

The Surf Shack is equidistant from the beach, local eateries and shops, providing the perfect reason to leave the car parked in the drive, walk and breathe in the clean salt air! The townspeople whom we encountered were courteous and friendly which enhanced our perfect stay at what is little slice of Heaven!

Katt and Sam were quickly responsive to any questions we may have presented regarding the " where, what and how"- please note that they were right as rain with each and every bit of info imparted!

Every aspect of our stay at the Surfshack was absolutely wonderful!

Many thanks to Katt and Sam for making us feel very welcome and providing us with a truly memorable Folly Beach, home away experience!

Super cute, clean and convenient!

  • 4 of 5

This place is so cute and extremely clean. We loved it!! Katt and Sam are great. The beach chairs and umbrella were super and the shack is close to everything, including our favorite lunch spot Chico Feo and Burt's Market. The AC is very powerful, which was especially appreciated the day it reached 92!

The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars (I wish 4.5 were possible) is that we could have used more dishware. Most people will probably be more than happy with what is provided, but we ate in a lot and ended up doing a lot of dishes as a result. This would not keep us from returning though!!

Perfect family vacation

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was perfect for our family of four. There was plenty of room in the courtyard for our bikes and fishing/beach gear. We split our time between being tourists in Charleston and being beach bums. The beach is beautiful and only five minutes from the cottage. Town is only a short walk away as well. There was plenty of room in the kitchen to prepare meals so we didn't have to eat out every day. Sam and Kat were super nice and very helpful on all of their tips on what to do and where to go. We highly recommend this vacation property!
