Welcome to The Garner Hideout!
This cozy guest house is in the Zilker ‘hood that marks the entryway to South Central Austin. The neighborhood sits on a limestone bluff over the 350-acre Zilker Park. This is the home of the Austin City Limits music fest and of Austin’s spring fed soul—Barton Springs pool.
From The Garner Hideout, walk west into the sunset to dip in Austin’s coolest pool, mountain bike along Barton Creek, stroll through the Botanical Gardens, romp on the Zilker’s playscape or ride the Zilker Zepher train. Don't miss the gorgeous Umlauf Sculpture Garden, it's a true urban oasis.
Just down the hill to Restaurant Row on Barton Springs Road - where you'll find Austin Java, Chuy's Tex Mex, and Uncle Billy's BBQ. And shortly from there you can make your way to Lady Bird Lake, where you can rent a kayak or canoe or circumnavigate the lake on Lady Bird’s hike and bike trails. At dusk, run, paddle or pedal under the Congress Ave. bridge, home to the nation’s largest urban bat colony. Just across the lake looms the downtown skyline and the Whole Foods’ mother store, a new Trader Joe's, and much much more.
Walk easily to the Alamo Drafthouse and several of Austin hot-spots like Vox, Shake Shack, Uchi, Cantina Italian, Medici Coffee, The Gibson and HighBall.
You're just a shot hop over to South Congress’ funky shops and restaurants and less than two miles away is Sixth Street’s and all the madness.

I was a little anxious about this place, as I always am. Dis I make a bad choice? Well, the neighborhood was wonderful, quiet, a good varity of houses, lots of trees and birds, and frequesnt people walking. We walked into the back yard and met the owner right away sweeping flower petals. A wonderful chat and then into the cottage. Very comfortable! Too bad we never found time to use the kitchen. We had four occasions to talk to the owners in the main house and enjoyed each conversation very much
My husband and I stayed in the "Garner Hideout" for 3 nights following a conference I attended. It was pleasant and met most of our expectations for accommodations. It is located in quaint neighborhood of bungalows and new build single family homes and is an easy walk to businesses on South Lamar. It is free from noise (except the ever-present Great-tailed Grackles) and seems reasonably private.
I could not find a closet in which to hang any clothes, so we utilized the kitchen chairs and they worked fine (I don't know if this was mentioned in any of the reviews). The a/c was very easy to use which is helpful if you want to close the windows that look towards the owner's residence. I did notice that the checkout directions left in the cottage were slightly different than those that were emailed prior to checkout but they were straight forward requests. The rental might feel a bit tight if more than 2 people use it.
Overall, we had a good time staying here.
This was a cute place to stay! Walking distance to ACL which was our selling point! Plenty of amenities to make our weekend more comfortable! Nice neighborhood! Parking was great! I thought the bedroom was separate from the living on the listing but it isn’t! The bedroom is literally to your left when you walk in and the bedroom, living, kitchen are all combined! We had 3 people staying with us so not what we expected but it was totally fine! Enjoyed our Austin stay!
Wonderfully cozy. Close to everything. We thoroughly enjoyed this rental.
The best host ever!! Way above my expectations. And location is very nice and safe and also quiet. Takes 20 minutes to walk to the bus #801 that goes to downtown. And SoCo district is very nice so no need to go downtown so often. Lots of music and shops there too.
This quiet and comfortable cottage worked perfectly for my time in Austin. It has all the basics you need for an easy and relaxing stay, and its location in a peaceful and eclectic neighborhood is still close to parks, restaurants, bars, clubs, even downtown. If you have access to a bicycle, you'll never need to get into a car. Even the public transportation works well here. While the cottage could use a few updates/upgrades, everything works extremely well (and they'd have to charge more if they did). Overall an outstanding value.
My husband and I stayed at The Garner Hideout for the ACL weekend. It is nothing fancy, but clean and well-equipped, and very convenient to Zilker Park and some of the best restaurants in Austin. On the downside, though, the A/C is not very good and the mini-blinds need to be replaced. The bathroom blind was broken and permanently stuck in the "up" position, leaving a person feeling very exposed. I did mention this to the manager, however, and I'm pretty sure he will be addressing this issue. The owners live in the main house, and are very nice, friendly people. If you have a small child, there are books and toys kept in the house, too. Overall, a nice, homey alternative to a hotel stay.
