PLEASE NOTE: If the calendar shows that the Writer's Cottage is available, then it is available! HomeAway requires you to send a "Booking Request" via email that I must subsequently respond to in order to send you a "Payment Request", but I wanted to make sure-just in case I am traveling and have trouble getting back to you immediately--that we will get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks!
This is a quaint, quiet, and beautiful two bedroom cottage on the historic Maytag House right in the middle of Woodland Park, Colorado. It has private entrance and parking from North Pine Street (intersecting West Gunnison Ave at the main house), and is a perfect getaway in this wonderful mountain village. It hosts two full beds that sleep 4 smaller people, but couples will find the division of rooms will allow for a bedroom and a separate living room/study a perfect retreat setting for quiet, restoration, and even creativity!
The two beds are really cool vintage (circa 1930's!) Murphy beds that fold down from closets. The mattresses are brand new and they rest on a wire mesh foundation across the steel frame. This allows for a little softeness in the overall feel of the bed, putting it in the "medium" scale of firmness. Please be aware that if you are over 6' tall that this is a standard full size (double) bed 54" wide by 75" long.
The Writer's Cottage is a small cottage on the private property of Ben and Robin Pasley in the center of Woodland Park, Colorado. It has it's own parking and gated entrance, however, and is completely separated from the main home. It has two main bedrooms (each with antique Murphy full-size beds) which can either serve as private living or sleeping spaces. It also has a small kitchen complete with a medium size refrigerator, full size sink, microwave, large toaster oven (big enough for casseroles or pizzas!), and all the basics for enjoying food and beverages. The beautiful bathroom is complete with a restored antique toilet, an amazing fully-tiled shower and natural light. All of the double sash windows are fully operable, and the addition of glassed storm doors adds light while keeping it a bit warmer in the cooler months. It has all the charm and simplicity of the 1930's, when it was first built, but now features all the modern comforts including an eco-friendly, and efficient Rinnai heater, 30 gallon hot water heater, and even a toe-warming electric heater under the kitchen sink! (Please note: the Rinnai heater is not hot to the touch and will not be an issue for your children or for furniture near the front of the heater as the forced air from the bottom of the heater moves throught the whole cottage on a kind of convection principle. )
The Writer's Cottage was completely renovated in 2014, fully insulated, and updated in every way, but very special care was taken to restore and revive the original floors, trim, and many of the appliances that are just as wonderful as they were when first installed.
The Writer's Cottage was originally constructed in 1935 by Freda Maytag, daughter of Frederick Louis Maytag ( the founder of the Maytag Company which first began to dominate the innovation and sale of the powered washing machine in the 1920's. Freda moved to Colorado in 1910 along with her family as a way to battle tuberculosis in the clean, dry air of the Colorado mountains. Here they all fell in love with the high country, purchasing land in Colorado and building homes. When she met and married Howard Sparey, they built this home in Woodland Park as a weekend get-away and summer home for her family. The Writer's Cottage, which we have nick-named it today, is actually a small cottage off to the south of the main home and was probably used to house guests or to house service help for the family when they were resident in the main house. Today, this historic property of about 2 acres, and three original structures: the main home, the Writer's Cottage, and the outdoor entertainment building, all nestle in the very middle of Woodland Park as a jewel of the city, unlike any other construction in the area, and is the only home on the Woodland Park Honorary Historical Registry.
The Writer's Cottage offers clean linens and towels per week for each guest, and is booked as with a three night minimum ... so stay a little longer, linger in our lovely town, and save money, too! The Writer's Cottage is heated in the winter, but it does not have air-conditioning as it is rarely needed in the cool, crisp Colorado mountains at 8,500 feet above sea level where the average temperatures range in the 60's and 70's from April through October, and nights often dip into the 40's. Basic kitchen appliances, cookware, and serving-ware are provided along with a basic supply of paper products in the kitchen and bath. There is also an electric kettle for water, and a selection of tea and sugar is always on the counter. There is plenty of hot water. The immediate grounds, patio and walkway are for guests to enjoy while the remaining private property is off limits for guests. Within a few city blocks, retreat guest can walk to local coffee, library, post office, restaurants, grocery store, micro-brewery and many quaint country stores and shopping sidewalks. Woodland Park is an amazing city to visit, and our centrally located park (only one block away) is being renovated in 2015! High speed internet is provided, but there is no television. Parking is available for one car per retreat family on the east side of the property just outside a small gate which opens almost immediately to the Writer's Cottage, and additional parking is available in an open city lot only one block away.
Our city just raised local tax rates, so the total tax on rental properties is now 13.69%.
We had a refreshing time relaxing in beautiful Colorado. The cottage was a welcoming place to come "home" to after exploring the Colorado springs area. It was fun to walk to the Donut Mill for a delicious breakfast. The cottage is also a great place to write, read, and rest!
My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It's in a very and peaceful and quiet neighborhood. Beds were comfortable, the kitchen was well stocked, and we had everything we needed.
We rented the cottage for 13 days and it was exactly what we had hoped for. Clean, well maintained, and in a great location. The outdoor gas grill was a nice touch and we ate most our meals outdoors (usually joined by the local deer population). The neighborhood appeared extremely safe and only a short walk into to town. The owners live next door and are attentive to your needs. I would highly recommend this property as well as the town of Woodland Park.
It was a great time for my family in writer's cottage. We stayed for one month such as Sabbath for us because of beautiful house and nature. Sunset was very impressive for me because it was looks like in the morning. So I thought evening starts new day because of sunshine. I saw deers, birds and animals. I appreciate that Ben gave us his consideration and kindness.
Stayed there 9 day's, it worked out perfect for what we used it for . Only thing it was lacking was a night light and a fan to circulate the air a little bit.It was very clean and cozy! Well worth the money :)
