The property has been in my family for more than a half century. The Prior family owners, are among the most prominent Philanthropic Families to the region.
I found with all correspondences, Mr Washington responded in a timely fashion. His property is located in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by local history and culture; and within .22 of a mile to the marina/waterfront park. I learned that Rob’s aunt purchased this property on a rent to own basis, and was the first family member to ever own land. Wanting to preserve the history of this property that he holds close to his heart, he is taking his time to renovate by himself with the aid of a helper, and is doing the renovations in phases. Currently 3 of the units are livable; with a blend of old wood finishes that could be salvaged and newer finishes at a price point he can afford. The units are modestly finished and furnished, with the basics in mind; keeping the pricing economical (at least the rate I paid was economical). Being able to rent, while still heading towards a goal of a more polished product, enables the guests to save on the rate, while helping the owner to create cash flow to continue with the projects.
I found all I needed to be able to cook my meals from scratch, the a/c worked, but the main unit was broken, and the temporary unit didn’t quite cool the front room or the kitchen area when the temps were hugging 100 degrees. (The first few days it was in the lower 90’ upper 80’s and the a/c cooled great for those temps.) The water pressure for a shower was adequate, but not a hard pressure. Since this has 3 upper units, one will hear the comings and goings of the other guests, but I found the other guests I ran into most friendly and no unacceptable disturbances. Much quieter than many hotels I’ve stayed in over the years. Unfortunately, the other guests were smokers, and although smoking is not permitted, the shared porch did have a cigarette smell to it at times.
I would rate this property a 2 star accommodation, with comparable amenities.
The big pluses are Mr. Washington’s availability to help you have a comfortable stay, a reasonably clean acceptable space where one can cook meals, be close to town, and save on costs. I also enjoyed knowing I was contributing to one fulfilling a dream to preserve a family legacy, a piece of both personal and city history. And who doesn’t mind not having all the frills, in exchange for a reasonably priced rate!! (Hopefully, the rates will stay in alignment to the amenities provided.)
