Authentic Old House Luxuriously Lodging 8-16 People With Sauna, Open Fireplace

On hiking route to Testa Grigia, Col Pinter in Monterosa area with views of the Italian side of the Matterhorn large old lodge for 8 to 16 people This authentically renovated old stone and wood house is luxuriously equiped with 6 bedrooms, 5 with en-suite bathrooms and one with a separate bathroom. There is a large living space with 360" open fire place , well equiped kitchen with bread baking machines, dishwasher, laundry machine and dryer, sauna, garden with a beautiful view all around, The house is one of the 20 houses in the highest "alpage" village of the Italian alps meaning that in summer cheese is made on location. The village is picture perfect antique with a former school house, a communal house, a bread baking house, a chapel and three fresh water sources and its bassins all connected with winding small paths and no dissonant modernities. One of the old houses is turned into a three room hotel and small restaurant. Its the best starting point for hiking to several mountain tops in summer and for skiing ski-in/ski-out in winter. Its the real mountain experience!

As ski enthousiasts we had been skiing in Switserland and France for years until we discovered the Montarosa skiing area. This vast skiing area struck us as thouroughly authentic with beautiful antique houses, great restaurants and wonderful people. As most people in this part of Italy speak French as well, were able to communicate as Dutch couple with three young kids. The second time we came here we met a very nice man who had his holiday house on the slope on the skipiste. We asked if his house was for sale. Its wasn't, but the next day he took us skiing to show the house he knew was for sale. We ended up buying this house. The next summer we took our 4x4 to drive up the house and were amazed by the incredible beauty of the mountains in summer. The views, the colours , the crisp mountain air, the sudden and dramatic change of the weather, the smells, the flowers right up to our doorstep. We spent every summerholiday together with the contractor to finish it. These summers were amazing.

Lodge chalet Gol is located in the village of Cuneaz at an altitude of 2083 meters making it the highest Alpage vilage in the Italian alps. Cuneaz looks directly out on the nearby south face of the Matterhorn. It is located uphill of the well known village Champoluc in the Aosta valley. The chalet had been authentically restored in the Walser style alpine characteristics like a roof made of large natural stone plates, stone walls and wooden balconies. There are roughly twenty other authentic houses in the village and especially in the evenings when the windows are lit and the scent of wood fires wafts on the breeze the village looks like something right of the pages of the Brothers Grimm.

A stroll around the village is a popular destination for hikers ending up having lunch at the smal restaurant in one of the villages typical old Rascards. It has simple but very good local Piemontese food. Cuneaz is on the hiking trail to a few mayor peaks in the MontaRosa area. There are lakes to discover and Testa Grigia, col Pinter; on the route Tor des Geants.

Lodge chalet Gol is for adventurers! For instance, don't expect to drive up the mountain in your city car. You need to have a four wheel drive vehicle to drive the unurfaced mountain roads up to the chalet. Most people hike up this trail for a day trip up to one of the peaks. In winter you can ski to the chalet or take the aerial tramway.

The region is proud of the traditional ‘rascard’ houses, which have a stone base with six pillars supporting a large wooden house on top. Historically, the residents and their livestock lived in the lower stone building. The grain, hay, and other supplies were kept high and dry in the wooden upper construction. Large flat stones at the top of the pillars kept rats from getting into the storehouse. One of the village’s many rascards has been renovated to house the restaurant L’Aroula.

Cuneaz is the highest working alpine village in the Italian Alps. Fontina cheese is still produced from milk from the local cows. In summer, the cows regularly come to graze in the village, and people simply tie a ribbon across the entrances to their gardens to keep the cows from coming in.

Up until about twenty years ago, the village had a school for the local children, and the villagers made sabots, hunted, and made active use of the village oven. Many of the current residents can tell fascinating stories about these traditions, and they would prefer to see Cuneaz made into an open-air museum. In August, the village honours St Lawrence with a mass in the San Lorenzo chapel and a celebration in the village square.

Here the main attraction is nature. It will fulfill your senses; the sights, smells and sounds of the beautiful meadows, full with flowers and herbs, the many waterfalls that can be seen from the house, the crisp mountain air, the sound of the cowbells, the fairy tale woods. then there is also the rough side of these mountains; the miles high cliffs, the icecold green lakes, the challenging trails.

If you become a mountain dweller in Cuneaz you need to know a few things about living in the mountains. Nights can be cold and heating is by shared communal gas. Please don't leave your windows open at night for you will be heating the surroundings. Gas provision to the village is once a year and limited. The villagers can get in trouble during the winter due to immoderate use of energy.
All rooms are very well ventilated so windows can stay closed.
Water from the tab is coming from a small subterranean lake just up the mountain. Use it wisely and instruct you children.
Be careful with fire. There is a barbeque place made in a stone wall which is safe. Candles should be supervised at all times and can only be used on the dining table.The Fire department will take more then an hour to come up to Cuneaz and by then all the wood house may have gone up in flames.
You are far from the city facilties. There is no garbage collection on the mountain. Bring small bags of garbage to the top of the ski-lift where they will take care of it.
If you have any questions on how things work this high in the mountains, please ask your fellow villagers. At this altitude you will find that people are dependent on each other.

You are halfway up the trail to Testa Grigia, Col Pinter, Lago Pinter and other mountain trails. Combine your trecking with great lunches or dining in the several idyllic restaurants on the mountain slopes. Great Italian food, renowned hospitality and great coffee! The house has a garden facing south with great views and waterfalls that can be heard and seen. There is a fresh water source next to the front door. The all wood interior and stone look bathrooms give the interior a mountain atmosfere. The rooms are small but convenient almost all with private bathrooms. The common area is spacious and situated around a large central fireplace. The private balconies for the different rooms are perfect for reading a book in the sun.
